Catching Up with Timbaland, the Man Behind Empire’s Infectious Beats

Justin Timberlake&#x;s Sexy Back, Kanye West&#x;s Stronger, and Jay Z&#x;s Dirt off Your Shoulder are just three of the many&#x;many&#x;hits worked on, or produced, by Timbaland. Now he&#x;s bringing his authoritative beats and hitmaking touch to the music for the smash Fox TV drama Empire&#x;set in the world of hip-hop and the music business&#x;starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. It&#x;s a world that Timbaland (born Timothy Z. Mosley) knows well. He&#x;s had hits with his own albums, as well as producing and writing songs for a massive number of artists that include Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Usher, Nas, Rihanna, Björk, and the aforementioned Timberlake, West, and Jay Z. Here, Timbaland talks with Lisa Robinson about music, re-invention, and Empire.

LISA ROBINSON: How did you get involved with Empire?

Timbaland: I was looking for Lee Daniels [the movie director and *Empire&#x;*s co-creator] to write something for my album, and he was like, Oh wow, I need you for the music for my show. As we went along, I put my thing on the back burner, and I thought that this show could really be something. There&#x;s nothing out there like this, and it came out at the perfect time.

You&#x;re the executive producer of the music for Empire&#x;how does that differ from the work you&#x;ve done with the artists you&#x;ve produced?

Well, I don&#x;t look at what I&#x;ve done in the past, I look at what I&#x;m setting up for the future. I feel like every six years the greats kind of revamp themselves&#x;and for me, Empire is like a first step of my re-invention.

Do you create the music starting with beats, or do you work music into the script?

There&#x;s no form or method to how it works. Sometimes things are written to beats, or we go over the script. I&#x;ve got a great relationship with (Empire producer) Brian Grazer, and Lee is letting me be free&#x;letting me interpret the words into music and emotion. Also, I have a team of great people, like Jim Beanz&#x;he writes most of the work, and I tell him the concept of what I want; I oversee it, I listen to it, I change a word here, or add something to a beat, switch that over there &#x; like that.

What do you think of the show?

If they keep the culture correct, it&#x;s just real. You see where [the characters] started from. You can be living fabulous, but your past culture is going to come up. At the end of the day, a lot of us come from poverty, from having nothing to building something and keeping our dream. What a lot of us have in common is we come from never giving up&#x;non-quitters, no matter what the circumstances.

Does anyone connected with the show ask you to try to get some of your famous friends to guest-star?

Nah, this is Fox. This is a network that&#x;s been around, and they&#x;re very professional. It would be kind of unprofessional to ask me. This is not their first rodeo.

What else are you working on these days?

I&#x;ve got a label partnership now with (Epic Records chairman and C.E.O.) L. A. Reid. I&#x;m producing a year-old girl named Tink, who&#x;s going to change things back to the days of Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott&#x;girls who gave you substance the way Biggie Smalls and Tupac did. And a singer named V. Bozeman&#x;and while I don&#x;t like comparing people to other people, she&#x;s going to give you that feeling that Whitney Houston gave you. They&#x;re also on my [forthcoming] album, Opera Noir, which is like nothing you&#x;ve heard before. What I&#x;m trying to find are these young people who have the same hunger and passion I once had and still have, and pass it on to the future. I feel I can be a mentor and help make new music that will break through some of the garbage. When music starts to fall off the path, with dumbness and flashiness, well, it&#x;s my job to set a tone, a foundation. If you want quality music, come up on the Timbaland side of the street.

Top 10 ‘Empire’ songs and the stories behind them

With songs overseen by Timbaland (who produced hits for Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake and Jay Z) and partner Jim Beanz, “Empire” has boasted plenty of tunes that could easily fit on radio. Here are 10 great tracks from its debut season with comments from those behind the music.

“Conqueror” — Estelle and Jussie Smollett

The soaring ballad, lifted from the British R&B singer’s latest album, was flipped into a duet after Columbia’s senior Vice President of A&R Shawn Holiday brought it to Smollett. (“A lot of songs get rejected,” Holiday says of the process.) It rocketed to No. 1 on iTunes’ hip-hop/rap chart after airing.

9. “Keep It Movin’ ” — Serayah McNeill and Yazz

“It was really fun to record,” McNeill said of the club banger. “I went from the studio right into filming the scene. Performing it live on set with the music loud was an experience I won’t forget.”

8. “No Apologies” — Jussie Smollett and Yazz

An early showing of the series’ hip-hop grit, the anthem also serves as its main theme song. “I love working with Jussie and Timbaland,” Yazz said. “When me and Jussie are together, it’s like a dynamic duo.”

7. “Can’t Truss Em” — Yazz

Despite Hakeem’s arrogance, the youngest of the Lyon brothers has had to prove his mettle. And this incendiary track helped. “He was not a very likable character until [recently],” said Geoff Bywater, Fox’s head of music. “When you have originals, people have to learn who the characters are. And now you see the tracks he’s involved with are starting to sell.”

6. “I Wanna Love You” — Jussie Smollett

Before landing the role of Jamal, Smollett was recording his album in a home studio, and this track is from those sessions. “There was supposed to be another song in that scene, and it just felt wrong,” Smollett recalled. “I had never pitched my music before, but it felt right. It’s just a fun, sexy groove that has an ‘Off the Wall’ type of vibe.”

5. “Walk Out on Me” — Courtney Love

Love’s bluesy, Raphael Saadiq-produced tune is one of a few contributed by star guests. “It’s always about the song,” Holiday said of the celebrity guests. “The exciting part about ‘Empire’ is that it has stimulated the music business.”

4. “You’re So Beautiful” — Jussie Smollett and Yazz

The jubilant party track is among the tunes Smollett penned. “Jussie, you’ve gotta give him credit,” Holiday said. Added Smollett: “There’s so much of myself in Jamal and so much of Jamal in me. These will be my stories that I tell as an artist.”

3. “What Is Love” — V. Bozeman

The searing ballad set the tone for the series in the pilot’s opening minutes. “It really touched the heart and people all over,” Bozeman said of the song. “There have been so many people who have done YouTube and Instagram covers,” Beanz said. “I’ve never seen that happen off of just a snippet of a song.”

2. “Drip Drop” — Yazz

Before “Drip Drop” was a viral sensation, with its ear-wormy chorus and infectious bounce, it was collecting dust from producer-writer Justin Bostwick’s since-abandoned rap aspirations. “We did it almost two years ago and didn’t really know what to do with it,” Bostwick said. “It took some getting used to hearing someone else rapping on the song.”

1. “Good Enough” — Jussie Smollett

Smollett’s fiery declaration is classic Timbaland, with its thumping production and sweeping chorus. “The dilemma for us was finding the right songs that fit Jussie and the character,” Holiday said. “And ‘Good Enough’ was perfect to play off the emotions of the powerful scene where the dad threw him in the trash can [for being gay].”

Every Justin Timberlake Single Ranked: Critic's Picks

So where does your favorite fall? Check out our list below to find out. (Note: We're only counting Timberlake's U.S. singles that hit Billboard's Pop Airplay chart.)

"Take Back the Night"

This carefree cut had the unfortunate distinction of sharing a title with a campus sexual assault awareness group, and the controversy ended up overshadowing the song itself. Timberlake did his best to make the best of the situation, telling Radar in "It is my hope that this coincidence will bring more awareness to this cause."

"Love Never Felt So Good" (Michael Jackson & Justin Timberlake)

How could the combo of MJ and JT be anything but pop gold? Unfortunately, this song -- the first single from Jackson's second posthumous album, Xscape -- failed to capture the energy of either megastar.

"TKO"

This one loses us almost immediately with Timbaland's opening line: "She kills me with that coo-coochie-coochie-coo." OK. And the metaphor for getting "knocked out" by love seems overplayed. It has a cool beat, but we were not knocked out by this one.

"Filthy"

After his buttoned-up 20/20 crooner era and a new album title promising a pastoral pastiche, we were not expecting a return to the disco pop of 's FutureSex/LoveSounds for the lead Man of the Woods single. But the funky Timbaland beat and tongue-in-cheek lyrics were a loose surprise.

"Summer Love"

This FutureSex/LoveSounds single is perfect for "ridin' in the drop-top with the top down," but it's also ultimately not incredibly memorable on an album full of standout cuts.

"SoulMate"

This one-off single definitely delivers on the breezy summertime mood promised by its "summer starts now" intro line, and it almost feels like a cousin to Drake's similarly relaxed "Passionfruit." Ultimately, though, it falls into solid-but-forgettable territory next to other entries in JT's catalog.

"The Other Side" (SZA & Justin Timberlake)

This vibrant Trolls World Tour single, with its disco-drenched production and shimmery keyboard line, looked like it would easily dance up the charts like its Hot topping predecessor "Can't Stop the Feeling!," also from the animated series. But the SZA duet never caught fire, despite being one of JT's catchiest and poppiest releases in years.

"What Goes Around … Comes Around"

The subject matter felt a little "been there, done that" after his earlier hit "Cry Me a River," and with a whopping running time, it was a very long single. But there are a lot of great pieces to this too-big puzzle.

"Suit & Tie" (feat. Jay Z)

After a nearly seven-year gap between JT albums, this song was a blessing from above back in But with some distance from its release, we can say it might not have been the perfect single we thought it was then.

"Can't Stop the Feeling!"

Timberlake happily splashed back on the scene in with an upbeat (and eventually Oscar-nominated) song-of-summer-worthy track about wanting to just keep dancing -- a message we can all get behind.

"Mirrors"

In this reflective midtempo track, Timberlake appears to sing directly to his wife, Jessica Biel. For someone who is so private about his non-music life, it was an intimate glimpse into their marital world.

"Until the End of Time"

This song is a total tribute to Prince ballads, complete with Linn drums. And then Justin went and added Prince favorite Beyoncé (his very own Apollonia) to the track to take it to the next purple level.

"Say Something" (feat. Chris Stapleton)

Ever since they teamed up on the CMA Awards stage in for an electric "Tennessee Whiskey"/"Drink You Away" duet, fans were begging for an official release from Timberlake and Stapleton -- and they got it in this grooving, roots-driven third single from Man of the Woods. The whole song is a laid-back vibe, feeling like these two Southern stars just let fans listen in on a soulful jam session.

9. "Rock Your Body"

The third Justified single is where the MJ comparisons began, since it would have fit in perfectly on Michael Jackson's Off the Wall. (We're not complaining.)

8. "Not a Bad Thing"

It's not a bad thing that this song sounds a lot like a throwback *NSYNC ballad -- like "I Drive Myself Crazy" or "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You," but with better lyrics.

7. "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows"

This FutureSex/LoveSounds single starts as a dance track before slowing down into a contemplative number, twisting the identical lyrics into something far more ominous -- kind of like what a drug does to you at the start of a party versus the end.

6. "Drink You Away"

The Tennessee native's first foray into country got a huge spotlight at the CMA Awards, where his performance of the sudsy song with a then-under-the-radar Chris Stapleton (see the "Say Something" entry above) put both "Drink You Away" and the bearded country crooner on the map.

5. "SexyBack"

Remember when this song first came out? Justin's fuzzy vocals were hardly recognizable and the driving beat was brand-new to radio. That was just JT and Timbaland setting new trends -- and inventing a new catchphrase.

4. "Cry Me a River"

The song's tabloidy subject matter could have overshadowed the music, but this Timbaland production masterpiece definitely stood on its own.

3. "My Love" (feat. T.I.)

This is JT's falsetto at its very best, delivering the loverboy lyrics that made fans from his boy-band days swoon. But then he added a verse from T.I., and suddenly it was OK for dudes to dance along too.

2. "Señorita"

The Justified intro track was made for performing live -- with its many spoken-word breakdowns and the male-female call-and-response section -- but somehow Justin and Pharrell were also able to bottle that energy into a perfect five-minute radio package.

1. "Like I Love You" (feat. Clipse)

This is quite possibly the best post-boy-band debut single of all time. He booked the hottest producers (The Neptunes) and a bubbling-under hip-hop duo (Clipse) to show that the bubblegum had officially popped. There couldn't have been a better introduction to Justin Timberlake, solo star.

Timati \u0026 La La Land feat. Timbaland \u0026 Grooya - Not All About The Money (Official Video HD)

Justin Timberlake Producer Timbaland Confirms Country Record. &#;I Don&#;t Discriminate No Genres&#;

timbaland

Justin Timberlake is going country, and you&#;d have to be stuck on Mars with blinders and earplugs on not to notice this. The only reason the complicit country and entertainment media have yet to report it is because they&#;re paralyzed unless someone hands them a press release and gives them marching orders.

Justin Timberlake has said he wanted to make a country record in the past, he recently bought property just south of Nashville, it&#;s been confirmed he&#;s recording in Nashville as we speak, and he even released an old song &#;Drink You Away&#; to country radio.

Now long-time Justin Timberlake producer and collaborator Timbaland has confirmed Timberlake is indeed making a country record, and that he is and will be an integral part of the recording process. Speaking to the morons over at TMZ, who asked Timbaland if he and Justin Timberlake were making a country record, Timbaland responded,

&#;You mean, are we gonna go country? Well guess what, we are country. He&#;s from Tennessee, I&#;m from Virginia. It&#;s only right that we try to tap into you know, what we was raised, in, you know? And I feel like I was raised, we was raised in the country. I mean, that&#;s who we are. I mean we love love songs. We heard our parents sing &#;em. You know, the old country songs. But now it&#;s a new generation of country. So &#;Drink You Away&#; was done on the &#;20/20 Experience&#; so, it&#;s now it&#;s one of the biggest songs, starting to be the biggest songs, but we always wanted to do country music. We thought some of the lyrics were country.&#;

Timbaland says that &#;Drink You Away&#; is &#;one of the &#;biggest songs,&#; but it is yet to be determined if it will be one of the biggest songs in country. The song did shoot up the iTunes and digital charts after Timberlake performed it with Chris Stapleton on the CMA Awards November 4th, but so far there&#;s been no significant movement on country radio to add it to rotations. It&#;s still early though.

&#;So are you saying that you are actually recording?&#; TMZ asked.

&#;I gotta break country. I gotta tap into country,&#; Timbaland responds. &#;I&#;m already posted up in Nashville. I&#;ve got a little spot in Nashville, so. That&#;s something I want to do &#;cause I am music. So I can&#;t, I don&#;t discriminate no genres. I just like I learn it, I study it, and I love it. You know, it&#;s like, you know, one day you might like ice cream, one day you may want some apple pie with ice cream. You know it&#;s like that. That&#;s how I look at it. I don&#;t discriminate.&#;

&#;So you and Justin are doing a country album?&#; TMZ asks for a third damn time.

&#;You know what? Now that you put it out there? Why not?&#; Timbaland responded.

Justin Timberlake was also hassled by TMZ at the Chris Stapleton show at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on Monday (). A clearly inebriated Timberlake could be heard saying, &#;See you soon, man&#; to Stapleton as he exited the country singer&#;s bus.

Some have wondered if Stapleton and Timberlake have been writing songs together, and if producer Dave Cobb might possibly be involved in the new Timberlake record since he produced Stapleton&#;s last album in Studio &#;A&#; in Nashville&#;the same studio Timberlake is rumored to be recording in. But whether any country producers or songwriters are involved in the project, Timbaland appears to be along for the ride as well.

List of songs recorded by Justin Timberlake

American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake has written and recorded material for his five studio albums. Timberlake released his solo debut studio album, Justified, in November [1] Most of the album was produced by The Neptunes, with additional collaborators including Brian McKnight, Scott Storch, Timbaland, and The Underdogs. "Like I Love You", written by Timberlake, Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams. "Cry Me a River", produced by Timbaland,[2] is a R&B song about a brokenhearted man who moves on from his past. A Rolling Stone reviewer called the song a "breakup aria."[3] Timberlake, Hugo and Williams also wrote "Rock Your Body" and "Señorita".

His second studio album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, was released in September [4] It infuses R&B and pop with techno, funk, and elements of rock, the last being the genre that was the main inspiration of Timberlake during the album's recording. The electro R&B song "SexyBack", is built around a pounding bass beat, electronic chords, and beat box sounds. Andrew Murfett of The Age wrote that the song was a "raunchy club banger that slyly suppresses" Timberlake's customary falsetto. "My Love" is a synthpop-influenced, R&B and hip hop song.[5] "What Goes Around Comes Around", is a pop-R&B song performed in a slow manner[6] and was described by some music critics as a "sequel" to his song "Cry Me a River". "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows" is an R&B and art rock song[7] that contains sexually suggestive lyrics and includes "human beatbox sounds" in its composition.[8]Rolling Stone described the song as "flowing from hip-hop bump-and-grind to an ambient wash of Interpol-inspired guitar drone."[9] Timberlake co-wrote and appeared as a featured vocalist on several songs, including "Give It to Me" with Timbaland, "Ayo Technology" with 50 Cent, "4 Minutes" with Madonna and "Dead and Gone" with T.I..

In March , after a seven-year hiatus from his solo music career, Timberlake released his third studio album, The 20/20 Experience.[10] The record incorporates neo soul styles with elements of older rock and soul music; its lyrics discuss themes of romance and sex. As a songwriter, Timberlake mainly collaborated with Timbaland, Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon and James Fauntleroy, and co-produced the tracks along with Timbaland and Harmon. "Suit & Tie", is a mid-tempo R&B song, that incorporates a "slow-drawl" consisting of slowed down synths and "slightly out of time" drum claps, similar to the Chopped and Screwed.[11] "Mirrors", is a progressive pop and R&B track, lyrically a love song about person's other half. "Let the Groove Get In" is a dance and pop song accompanied by canned horns, propulsive percussion and Timberlake's harmonized voice over a pop arrangement.[12] In September , Timberlake released the second half of the project, The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2.[13] It included the pop ballad "Not a Bad Thing" and the gospel-blues "Drink You Away".[14] Timberlake also appeared on the songs "Love Never Felt So Good" from Xscape and "Holy Grail" from Magna Carta Holy Grail. For the disco-pop song "Can't Stop the Feeling!", Timberlake collaborated in the songwriting and production with Max Martin and Shellback.[15] The production of his fifth studio album Man of the Woods () was handled by Timberlake, The Neptunes, Timbaland, Danja, and Rob Knox.

This list shows the title, year, other performers, and writers for each song which Timberlake has recorded during his solo career, outside the band NSYNC.
