Dimensional Fund Advisors, L.P. is a private investment firm headquartered in Austin, Texas. Dimensional was founded in Chicago in 1981 by David Booth, Rex Sinquefield and Larry Klotz. The company has affiliates within 13 offices in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, Netherlands, Australia, Singapore, and Japan. Dimensional maintains U.S. offices in Charlotte, North Carolina and Santa Monica, California and has affiliate offices globally. The company is owned by its employees, board members and outside investors.

The company’s founders studied at the University of Chicago under Eugene Fama and Kenneth French. DFA's investment strategy is based on application of the efficient market hypothesis. Dimensional was one of the earliest firms to offer passive investing and "runs the oldest small-cap index fund" in the United States, but their versions of index funds skew towards smaller company stocks and value stocks, and thus operate differently from most index funds, which results in regulators and some analysts considering these to be actively managed funds. The company offers equity and fixed income mutual funds and repackaged funds as Exchange-traded funds.

In 2009, Dimensional acquired SmartNest, a retirement planning computer software company. Researcher Robert C. Merton left SmartNest's board after the purchase and became a Resident Scientist at Dimensional.

Highest paying job titles at Dimensional include Software Engineer, HR Business Partner, and International Tax Manager

There's a little hope for a better place and it really could be great with a few simple changes.

Poor middle management leaves employees scratching their heads on what the future roadmap is. Employees left wondering whether they will have a role or purpose going forward. A lot of time wasted in meetings with a huge hole left when decisions need to be made. Lack of product or technology ownership allows/causes departments to double up on tasks and duties causing much tension and frustration. No product/project
transparency within departments. Misrepresentation of technical capabilities to achieve personal agendas.

Its unfortunate because employees have hope that things will improve... but have waited so long that the hope is diminishing.

Head down workplace

No much of a fun or collaborative atmosphere. If you ask for help get ready to be yelled at and if you need something from the tech department get ready to pull teeth and spend months trying to resolve an issue or have resources assigned to your work.

The worst culture in Austin

The culture at Dimensional is one of mistrust and cover your butt. Lots of politics and dumb decisions being made at the top. Employees repeatedly asked for flexibility so management agree that instead of everyone working 8-5 employees could chose to work 7-4 or 9-6 but they must start and finish either on the hour or the half hour and work a full 9 hours with 1 hour lunch break, skipping lunch and leaving an hour earlier isn't an option. This should tell you all you need to know about how this place is run.

My experience

Great company to work for! Great future for the company! Technology wise is a bit jealous, for the type of industry, but a lot of potential to do next generation technology solutions. Management is not open to change, just doing the same thing over and over it C# is the only tool to build all types of solutions, there is something missing... perspective.

HR Coordinator in Austin, TX

Great people

DFA was a great job because of the people. I met so many smart, compelling, friendly and professional people while there. The only reason I left was to explore a new field and for a more flexible work schedule.

9 hours. Sometimes we worked till 11pm but not often. We regularly worked on weekends, as staff had left and we had to do extra work to make up for the gap ... HR typically took 4-5 months to hire a new person to replace the person who left suddenly.

Dressed and without saying a word, walked out the door. My beloved wife was lying in bed, clearly continuing to experience the pleasure of meeting such a Man.
