Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 ThenJesustsaidtothecrowdsandtohisdisciples,uThescribesandthePhariseesvsitonMoses’seat,sodoandobservewhatevertheytellyou,wbutnottheworkstheydo.xFortheypreach,butdonotpractice.yTheytieupheavyburdens,hardtobear,andlaythemonpeople’sshoulders,buttheythemselvesarenotwillingtomovethemwiththeirfinger.tTheydoalltheirdeedsztobeseenbyothers.Fortheymakeatheirphylacteriesbroadandbtheirfringeslong,andtheyclovetheplaceofhonoratfeastsanddthebestseatsinthesynagoguesanddgreetingsinethemarketplacesandbeingcalledfrabbibyothers.gButyouarenottobecalledrabbi,foryouhaveoneteacher,andyouarehallbrothers.iAndcallnomanyourfatheronearth,forjyouhaveoneFather,whoisinheaven.10 Neitherbecalledinstructors,foryouhaveoneinstructor,ktheChrist.11 lThegreatestamongyoushallbeyourservant.12 mWhoeverexaltshimselfwillbehumbled,andwhoeverhumbleshimselfwillbeexalted.

13 Butwoentoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foryouoshutthekingdomofheaveninpeople’sfaces.Foryoupneitherenteryourselvesnorallowthosewhowouldentertogoin.15 Woetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foryoutravelacrossseaandlandtomakeasingleqproselyte,andwhenhebecomesaproselyte,youmakehimtwiceasmucharchildofshellasyourselves.

16 Woetotyou,ublindguides,whosay,vIfanyoneswearsbythetemple,itisnothing,butifanyoneswearsbythegoldofthetemple,heisboundbyhisoath.17 Youblindfools!Forwhichisgreater,thegoldorwthetemplethathasmadethegoldsacred?18 Andyousay,Ifanyoneswearsbythealtar,itisnothing,butifanyoneswearsbyxthegiftthatisonthealtar,heisboundbyhisoath.19 Youblindmen!Forwhichisgreater,thegiftorythealtarthatmakesthegiftsacred?20 Sowhoeverswearsbythealtarswearsbyitandbyeverythingonit.21 Andwhoeverswearsbythetempleswearsbyitandbyzhimwhodwellsinit.22 AndwhoeverswearsbyaheavenswearsbybthethroneofGodandbychimwhositsuponit.

23 dWoetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foreyoutithemintanddillandfcumin,andhaveneglectedtheweightiermattersofthelaw:gjusticeandmercyandfaithfulness.hTheseyououghttohavedone,withoutneglectingtheothers.24 Youblindguides,strainingoutagnatandswallowingiacamel!

25 jWoetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Forkyoucleantheoutsideoflthecupandtheplate,butinsidetheyarefullofmgreedandself-indulgence.26 YoublindPharisee!Firstcleantheinsideoflthecupandtheplate,thattheoutsidealsomaybeclean.

27 nWoetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foryouarelikeowhitewashedtombs,whichoutwardlyappearbeautiful,butwithinarefullofdeadpeople’sbonesandpalluncleanness.28 Soyoualsoqoutwardlyappearrighteoustoothers,butwithinyouarefullofrhypocrisyandlawlessness.

29 sWoetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foryoubuildthetombsoftheprophetsanddecoratethemonumentsoftherighteous,30 saying,Ifwehadlivedinthedaysofourfathers,wewouldnothavetakenpartwiththeminsheddingthebloodoftheprophets.31 Thusyouwitnessagainstyourselvesthatyouaretsonsofthosewhomurderedtheprophets.32 uFillup,then,themeasureofyourfathers.33 Youserpents,vyoubroodofvipers,howareyoutoescapebeingsentencedtowhell?34 xThereforeyIsendyouzprophetsandwisemenandascribes,bsomeofwhomyouwillkillandcrucify,andbsomeyouwillcfloginyoursynagoguesanddpersecutefromtowntotown,35 sothatonyoumaycomealletherighteousbloodshedonearth,fromthebloodofrighteousfAbeltothebloodofgZechariahthesonofBarachiah,whomyoumurderedbetweenhthesanctuaryandithealtar.36 Truly,Isaytoyou,jallthesethingswillcomeuponthisgeneration.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 kOJerusalem,Jerusalem,thecitythatlkillstheprophetsandstonesthosewhoaresenttoit!HowoftenwouldIhavemgatherednyourchildrentogetheroasahengathersherbroodpunderherwings,andqyouwerenotwilling!38 See,ryourhouseislefttoyoudesolate.39 ForItellyou,youwillnotseemeagain,untilyousay,sBlessedishewhocomesinthenameoftheLord.

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 tJesusleftthetempleandwasgoingaway,whenhisdisciplescametopointouttohimthebuildingsofthetemple.Butheansweredthem,Youseeallthese,doyounot?Truly,Isaytoyou,utherewillnotbelefthereonestoneuponanotherthatwillnotbethrowndown.

Signs of the End of the Age

AshesatonvtheMountofOlives,thedisciplescametohimwprivately,saying,Tellus,xwhenwillthesethingsbe,andwhatwillbethesignofyourycomingandofztheendoftheage?AndJesusansweredthem,aSeethatnooneleadsyouastray.Forbmanywillcomeinmyname,saying,IamctheChrist,andtheywillleadmanyastray.Andyouwillhearofwarsandrumorsofwars.Seethatyoudarenotalarmed,forthisemusttakeplace,buttheendisnotyet.Forfnationwillriseagainstnation,andgkingdomagainstkingdom,andtherewillbehfaminesandearthquakesinvariousplaces.Allthesearebutthebeginningofithebirthpains.

Thenjtheywilldeliveryouupktotribulationandlputyoutodeath,andmyouwillbehatedbyallnationsformyname’ssake.10 Andthenmanywillfallawayandnbetrayoneanotherandhateoneanother.11 Andmanyofalseprophetswillarisepandleadmanyastray.12 Andbecauselawlessnesswillbeincreased,qtheloveofmanywillgrowcold.13 rButtheonewhoendurestotheendwillbesaved.14 Andthisgospelofthekingdomswillbeproclaimedthroughoutthewholeworldtasatestimonyutoallnations,andvthentheendwillcome.

The Abomination of Desolation

15 SowhenyouseetheabominationofdesolationwspokenofbytheprophetDaniel,standinginxtheholyplace(yletthereaderunderstand),16 thenletthosewhoareinJudeafleetothemountains.17 zLettheonewhoisonathehousetopnotgodowntotakewhatisinhishouse,18 andlettheonewhoisinthefieldnotturnbacktotakehiscloak.19 Andbalasforwomenwhoarepregnantandforthosewhoarenursinginfantsinthosedays!20 PraythatyourflightmaynotbeinwinteroronaSabbath.21 Forthentherewillbecgreattribulation,dsuchashasnotbeenfromthebeginningoftheworlduntilnow,no,andneverwillbe.22 Andifthosedayshadnotbeencutshort,nohumanbeingwouldbesaved.Butforethesakeoftheelectthosedayswillbecutshort.23 fThenifanyonesaystoyou,Look,hereistheChrist!orThereheis!donotbelieveit.24 Forgfalsechristsandhfalseprophetswillariseandiperformgreatsignsandwonders,hsoastoleadastray,ifpossible,eventheelect.25 See,jIhavetoldyoubeforehand.26 So,iftheysaytoyou,Look,kheisinthewilderness,donotgoout.Iftheysay,Look,heisintheinnerrooms,donotbelieveit.27 lForasthelightningcomesfromtheeastandshinesasfarasthewest,sowillbemthecomingoftheSonofMan.28 nWhereverthecorpseis,therethevultureswillgather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

29 Immediatelyafterothetribulationofthosedayspthesunwillbedarkened,andthemoonwillnotgiveitslight,andqthestarswillfallfromheaven,andthepowersoftheheavenswillbeshaken.30 ThenrwillappearinheavensthesignoftheSonofMan,andthentallthetribesoftheearthwillmourn,andutheywillseetheSonofMancomingonthecloudsofheavenvwithpowerandgreatglory.31 Andwhewillsendouthisangelswithaloudxtrumpetcall,andtheywillygatherzhiselectfromathefourwinds,bfromoneendofheaventotheother.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32 Fromthefigtreelearnitslesson:assoonasitsbranchbecomestenderandputsoutitsleaves,youknowthatsummerisnear.33 Soalso,whenyouseeallthesethings,youknowthatheisnear,cattheverygates.34 dTruly,Isaytoyou,thisgenerationwillnotpassawayuntilallthesethingstakeplace.35 eHeavenandearthwillpassaway,butfmywordswillnotpassaway.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36 Butconcerningthatdayandhourgnooneknows,noteventheangelsofheaven,hnortheSon,ibuttheFatheronly.37 jForaswerethedaysofNoah,ksowillbethecomingoftheSonofMan.38 jForasinthosedaysbeforethefloodtheywereeatinganddrinking,lmarryingandgivinginmarriage,untilmthedaywhenNoahenteredtheark,39 andtheywereunawareuntilthefloodcameandsweptthemallaway,ksowillbethecomingoftheSonofMan.40 Thentwomenwillbeinthefield;onewillbetakenandoneleft.41 nTwowomenwillbegrindingoatthemill;onewillbetakenandoneleft.42 Therefore,pstayawake,foryoudonotknowonwhatdayqyourLordiscoming.43 rButknowthis,thatifthemasterofthehousehadknowninwhatpartofthenightsthethiefwascoming,hewouldhavestayedawakeandwouldnothavelethishousebebrokeninto.44 Thereforeyoualsomustbetready,forutheSonofManiscomingatanhouryoudonotexpect.

45 Whothenisvthefaithfulandwwiseservant,whomhismasterhassetoverhishousehold,togivethemtheirfoodatthepropertime?46 xBlessedisthatservantwhomhismasterwillfindsodoingwhenhecomes.47 Truly,Isaytoyou,yhewillsethimoverallhispossessions.48 Butifthatwickedservantsaystohimself,Mymasterzisdelayed,49 andbeginstobeathisfellowservantsandeatsanddrinkswithadrunkards,50 themasterofthatservantwillcomebonadaywhenhedoesnotexpecthimandatanhourhedoesnotknow51 andwillcuthiminpiecesandputhimwiththehypocrites.Inthatplacectherewillbeweepingandgnashingofteeth.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 Thenthekingdomofheavenwillbelikedtenvirginswhotooktheirlampsandwenttomeetethebridegroom.Fiveofthemwerefoolish,andfivewerewwise.Forwhenthefoolishtooktheirlamps,theytooknooilwiththem,butthewisetookflasksofoilwiththeirlamps.Asthebridegroomfwasdelayed,theyallbecamedrowsyandslept.Butgatmidnighttherewasacry,Hereisthebridegroom!Comeouttomeethim.Thenallthosevirginsroseandhtrimmedtheirlamps.Andthefoolishsaidtothewise,Giveussomeofyouroil,forourlampsaregoingout.Butthewiseanswered,saying,Sincetherewillnotbeenoughforusandforyou,gorathertothedealersandbuyforyourselves.10 Andwhiletheyweregoingtobuy,thebridegroomcame,andithosewhowerereadywentinwithhimtojthemarriagefeast,andkthedoorwasshut.11 Afterwardtheothervirginscamealso,saying,lLord,lord,opentous.12 lButheanswered,Truly,Isaytoyou,mIdonotknowyou.13 nWatchtherefore,foryouoknowneitherthedaynorthehour.

The Parable of the Talents

The Final Judgment

31 iWhentheSonofMancomesinhisglory,andalltheangelswithhim,jthenhewillsitonhisgloriousthrone.32 Beforehimkwillbegatheredlallthenations,andmhewillseparatepeopleonefromanotherasashepherdseparatesnthesheepfromthegoats.33 Andhewillplacethesheeponhisright,butthegoatsontheleft.34 ThenotheKingwillsaytopthoseonhisright,Come,youqwhoareblessedbymyFather,rinheritsthekingdomtpreparedforyouufromthefoundationoftheworld.35 ForvIwashungryandyougavemefood,Iwasthirstyandyouwgavemedrink,xIwasastrangerandyouwelcomedme,36 vIwasnakedandyouclothedme,yIwassickandyouzvisitedme,aIwasinprisonandyoucametome.37 Thentherighteouswillanswerhim,saying,Lord,whendidweseeyouhungryandfeedyou,orthirstyandgiveyoudrink?38 Andwhendidweseeyouastrangerandwelcomeyou,ornakedandclotheyou?39 Andwhendidweseeyousickorinprisonandvisityou?40 AndbtheKingwillanswerthem,cTruly,Isaytoyou,asyoudidittooneoftheleastofthesedmybrothers,youdidittome.

41 Thenhewillsaytothoseonhisleft,eDepartfromme,youfcursed,intogtheeternalfirepreparedforhthedevilandhisangels.42 ForiIwashungryandyougavemenofood,Iwasthirstyandyougavemenodrink,43 Iwasastrangerandyoudidnotwelcomeme,nakedandyoudidnotclotheme,sickandinprisonandyoudidnotvisitme.44 Thentheyalsowillanswer,saying,Lord,whendidweseeyouhungryorthirstyorastrangerornakedorsickorinprison,anddidnotministertoyou?45 Thenhewillanswerthem,saying,Truly,Isaytoyou,asyoudidnotdoittooneoftheleastofthese,jyoudidnotdoittome.46 Andthesewillgoawaykintoeternalpunishment,buttherighteouskintoleternallife.

26 WhenJesushadfinishedallthesesayings,hesaidtohisdisciples,mYouknowthataftertwodaysnthePassoveriscoming,andotheSonofManpwillbedelivereduptobecrucified.
