Extinction is the third paid Expansion Pack for ARK: Survival Evolved.

Extinction was released on November 6th, 2018 for PC and released on November 13th for Xbox One and PS4, and is available for purchase through the Season Pass.

Overview[]

Extinction places survivors on an Element-infested, ravaged planet filled with fantastical creatures both organic and technological. Earth holds both the secrets of the past and the keys to its salvation.

The Corrupted Earth Map[]

Overview

This map, set on Ravaged Earth rather than an ARK up in space, forces players to survive an Earth unfamiliar to us: one of strange features and stranger creatures. In the center of the map lies an abandoned city, usually referred to as the Great City or Sanctuary. It is the remains of some great technologically advanced civilization, the same one that built the ARKs. Outside of the city borders, pockets of life can be hard to find among the corrupted wasteland. They are still there, however, in the protective borders of the Proto-ARKs. To the southeast, the desert Proto-ARK exists. To the north, the Snow Dome, a second Proto-ARK. Another exists to the northwest, called the Sunken Forest, which was supposed to be another ARK but failed when it collapsed into the ground, presumably due to there being a large sinkhole underneath it. Strangely enough, the Proto-ARKs represent past challenges the survivor has faced: the Sanctuary and Snow Dome vaguely representing The Island, the Desert Dome representing Scorched Earth, and the Sunken Forest bearing similarities to Aberration.

Toward the bottom left of the map lie the Sulfur Fields. Despite containing acid in place of water, and being harsh, dry and rocky, it is one of the more liveable areas of the wasteland; and due to containing sulfur, gas and sap, it can be worth visiting for it's resources. The Forbidden Zone, considered by some players to be the most dangerous part of the wasteland, makes up the northern center of the map and is overall paler in colour than the rest of the area. It contains a flat, open area at the top of the Zone, where the King Titan is fought.

The central south of the wasteland holds the Sweeping Spires and the Sludge Basin. The Spires are formed of sweeping, curving cliffs and, as it's name suggests, spires, and borders the dropoff at the edge of the map. The Sludge Basin is tucked beneath the cliffs of the Spires, and is primarily filled by rivers of murky goo. Despite being called 'dead' this Earth may be more alive than we first thought, but with life we don't understand.

New Resources

Corrupted Earth features several new resources as well as existing ones from previous DLCs. Some of these resources, such as Blue Crystalized Sap and Silicate serve as substitutes for other resources.

New Features

Corrupted Earth contains several interactive structure drops known as Orbital Supply Drops and Element Nodes. This new feature requires all survivors with their tamed Creatures to fend off against waves of Corrupted Creatures to obtain the items left behind inside, in the form of PvE style raid.[2] The in parts irregular outer boundary of the map is indicated with poles bearing red lights at the top. Crossing the outer boundary of the map will, unlike in the other maps, instantly kill you and your tamed creature.

New Creatures

Corrupted Earth contains living creatures. The corruption of Element has led to turning most of the Creatures into a variant known as "Corrupted" which roam around the earth. Due to the over-exposure of the Element, their minds and bodies have become too Corrupted to be tamed like their original counterparts, and must be killed on sight since not only will they destroy anything non-corrupt in their way, their minds moves in a "hive-mentality" state which makes any previous Temperament they were known for redundant. These include creatures like the Corrupted Wyvern from Scorched Earth and the Corrupted Rock Drake from Aberration.

Moreover, these Corrupted Creatures react to activations of Orbital Supply Drops and Element Nodes, causing them to amass against the tribes who activated them in waves and will attack not only them, but mainly the activated drop as well.

However, not all creatures mutated by the Element submit to its "hive-mentality". Some creatures, such as Gasbags still retain its normal temperament, thus allowing survivors to tame them despite their state of appearance.

Enormous Creatures, known as "Titans" roam across sections of the map accessible through dungeons/caves once their following prototype Obelisks are activated. They are extremely aggressive, but survivors who managed to knock them down will be able to tame the savage beasts temporarily, the 3 "smaller" Titans must be defeated in order to fight the final and strongest Titan for the expansion.

Within Earth lies technologies like the Enforcer and the Scout. While these new Mechanical Creatures cannot be tamed like organic beings, they can be crafted by survivors with parts from destroyed Creatures and blueprints from Orbital Supply Drops to build them as part of their tribe.

Loot

Different from its predecessors, Extinction does not contain Supply Crates or Loot Crates that descend from the sky or appear on the ground as in Aberration. There are several ways to obtain loot items:

  • Gacha Crystals - special Gacha Crystals provide armor, weapons and sometimes structures, but do not contain saddles, but this is the easiest and safest way to obtain said items.
  • Cave Loot Crates - the three caves, Desert Cave, Forest Cave, and Ice Cave host a number of high-level Loot Crates containing weapons, armor and saddles.
  • Orbital Supply Drops - defending the waves of Orbital Supply Drops and securing the loot provides armor, weapons, structures and Tek Tier items exclusive to Extinction, such as Cryopods.
  • Defeating the 4 Titans ( Desert Titan, Forest Titan, Ice Titan and King Titan) provides survivors with valuable loot.

Unique Environmental Features[]

  • Eclipses that temporarily dim the light.
  • Geysers that launch survivors and Creatures into the air.
  • Meteor showers where meteors rain down upon the land and destroy structures and kill Creatures.
  • Orbital Supply Drops that fall from the sky and Element Nodes that rise from the ground that, when activated, start PvE horde-styled events. The orbital supply drops are also attacked by the corrupted dinosaurs

'ARK' Extinction Dino & Creature Guide - How to Tame Gasbags, Velonasaur & More

ARK: Survival Evolved Extinction has finally arrived, bringing with it an assortment of new Dinos and creatures to tame. In this ongoing guide, we'll offer tips to add the Gasbags, Velonasaur Snow Owl and much more to your tribe.

Note that all saddles for applicable creatures craft with 150 Chitin or Keratin, 185 Fiber and 350 Hide.

Velonasaur: To tame a Velonasaur, go to the desert biome of Extinction with a basic Bola, meat and tranq arrows in hand. When it shoots needles at you, use the Bola to deflect them. Move to the side to avoid its projectiles, and pump it with tranq arrows till it drops. Once it's down, fill it with meat, like Mutton, or some Regular Augmented Kibble if you have it. Its saddle unlocks at level 27.

Gasbags: The Gasbags spawn in the Sulfurous Fields outside the main city. You'll also need a Bola and tranq arrows to begin the hunt. The basic idea is to fill the passive herbivore with Mejoberries, Crops or regular Berries. Hit it with the Bola and tranq it if it starts to flutter too much. This is a great starter Dino, since it doesn't require a saddle to ride. There is, however, an optional two-player saddle that unlocks at level 43.

Gacha: The Gacha lives in the Forest biome and is a passive tame that will eat pretty much everything you drop. It prefers Snow Owl Feces or Element, but it will also eat stones or anything in your inventory. Its saddle unlocks at level 38.

Snow Owl: The Snow Owl is a more advanced tame in the snow biome, which means you'll need upgraded gear to score one. Required supplies include a Bola, as well as Tranq Darts and a long-neck rifle. It's possible to get the job done with traditional tranq arrows, but you risk killing the Owl in the process. Once it's down, fill it with meat or Superior Augmented Kibble. The saddle unlocks at level 61.

Managarmr: Once you've got the Snow Owl, the Managarmr is the next beast worth going after. It's essentially a snow-themed Rock Drake with more advanced capabilities. Look for one in the lake area of the snow biome. Because it's so mobile, the best way to tame it is by getting aboard another flyer, preferably a Snow Owl, and shooting it with Tranq Darts through a Rifle. The Snow Owl's freeze ability comes in handy here, because it's one of the only ways to effectively slow the Managarmr down. Fill it with meat once it falls. Its saddle unlocks at level 66.

Scout and Enforcer: Scouts and Enforcers stalk the city areas of Extinction. You can get one to work for you by crafting it with parts harvested from downed Enforcers or Scouts. The exact recipes vary slightly, and the power of your product depends on the level of the parts used to craft it.

That's all we know about ARK Extinction's tames so far. We'll update this guide with further details if necessary. For those who'd rather not go through the process of taming, we also have a list of working admin commands as well.

ARK: Survival Evolved is available now on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Mac and Linux.

Ark: Extinction brings pocket dinosaurs, ridable 'Gasbags,' and massive titans to Earth

Note: an earlier version of this story said that items could be frozen in the cryochamber: this is incorrect. Only dinosaurs can be frozen.

Following a countdown on Ark: Survival Evolved's Twitch channel, the teaser trailer for Ark: Extinction was revealed. Extinction, as many players suspected, takes place on Earth, but it's not any kind of earth we recognize. With a mix of dinosaurs and sci-fi technology, is this the earth's past or its future? That's one of the mysteries players will get a chance to unravel this November 6 as Ark: Survival Evolved's third DLC arrives. The trailer above shows off some new creatures and tools coming to Extinction, as well as a Titan: a massive monster that despite its enormous size is being referred to by Studio Wildcard as a 'miniboss'.

If that humongous thing is a miniboss, that would imply there's a final endboss that's even bigger, right? I spoke with Studio Wildcard about Extinction, and here's what they told me.

First, let's talk about a few new dinos. You can one see in the trailer, called an enforcer: a synthetic dino that can climb walls, strafe, and make short jumps via teleportation. Studio Wildcard isn't sure if players will tame or craft enforcers—they're still working on some of the finer details of Extinction—but either way you'll be able to ride enforcers when you acquire one, which will allow you to make those blink-style teleporting jumps around the landscape.

Another new dino isn't shown in the trailer but you can see its concept art above. It's tentatively being called 'Gasbags' (this may change), and will serve as a pack mule. You can load it up with resources out in the wild, then inflate it like a balloon and float away on its back, piloting it as it expels the air it has sucked in. Bizarre, but kind of cute, I think, and it definitely sounds like a useful creature for getting around with a heavy load of minerals.

As for that immense Titan seen in the trailer? It'll be tamable, too. It serves as what Wildcard amusingly calls a 'miniboss', though there's nothing particularly mini about it, except perhaps in comparison to the as-yet unseen endboss of the expansion, which is even bigger than the Titans. To confront Ark's final boss, players will first have to best all the different Titans in Extinction.

If you're not into endgame stuff, don't worry: Titans won't be freely roaming the map and smashing your base at will. Players will have to seek them out through dungeon levels before they'll appear, and while Studio Wildcard didn't reveal much in the way of specifics, or even how many Titans there are, each Titan will be a little different and it'll require more than just damage-dealing to defeat them.

Several new items will arrive with Extinction, including drones called scouts that can be remotely piloted by players. You'll be able to peer through special binoculars to see through your scout's camera as you send them out for recon (the trailer shows a few seconds of footage from the perspective of a scout), allowing you to tag enemies and explore without putting yourself in danger. You may even be able to rig your scout with explosives should you want to send one into an enemy camp on a mission that involves more than just spying.

There's also a tool that is temporarily being called an 'item balloon'. If you're out gathering resources you can load it up and float it back to your base or the location of your choice, or perhaps do the reverse: use it to airlift a supply of resources to your location. Sounds like a nice option if you haven't managed to tame a gasbag. Other players may be able to shoot your balloon down and help themselves to your goods, however.

Want to get weird? Or at least, weirder? Extinction will introduce a cryochamber that will allow you to freeze creatures into "ice cube form," and then carry them around in your pocket. Sort of a pocket monster that you can then deploy as needed (though these ice cubes will slowly degrade in your pocket). The cubes are still heavy, but make for an easier way to transport dinos than having to lead them through the world (and while frozen, they won't need to be fed). Studio Wildcard suggests this will also make for a good way to trade dinosaurs with other players, as anyone collecting a cube can claim its contents (which also means if another player kills you, they can take your cubes).

Along with these new items and systems, I'm told movement features from the last expansion, Aberration, will be present in Extinction, including the climbing system, gliding, and ziplines, so you'll have plenty of ways to get around the world.

Players will also have to contend with untamable 'corrupt' dinosaurs. There are areas of the world where corrupted Element appears (seen in the trailer as a spiky black spire growing from the ground), and that corruption has spread to some dinos. This corruption has made these infected dinosaurs hyper-aggressive and given them a hive-mind mentality, and even species that normally flee from players will now attack if they're corrupted. New PvE events will occur in the world where the players can attempt to collect large amounts of Element while fending off wave-based attacks of corrupted dinos attempting to consume it. Studio Wildcard described it as almost a tower defense-style event, with the potential for some simultaneous PvP if an competing clan shows up to claim the Element for themselves.

There's more to be revealed, and leading up to Extinction's release on November 6, new Explorer Notes will be dropped into Ark and its expansions which will shed more light on Extinction and unlock new skins for players. Extinction is included in Ark's Season Pass, and can be purchased separately on Steam.
