Shipwreck Point Golf, Surf City

  • Great experience. Two different courses to choose from with plenty of interesting obstacles on both sides. Pirate/shipwreck motif is well decorated. Inside shop is well stocked with various drinks and ice cream treats.

  • I really enjoyed immediately having a choice between 2 different courses to play through. Having two different courses also made it easier to deal with a greater number of customers so I never felt rushed or crowded by someone playing behind us. In each hole however, it seemed like there wasn't much variety of new/interesting mechanics aside from some small hills and a few curves and every once in a while some small obstacles. Very easy but fun course with nice staff😊

  • 2 courses to choose from - play one or get a deal on both. Theres a fun pirate theme with some little photo op spots. There is a little gift shop with ice cream treats and drinks. Bathrooms weren't great but not terrible. The guy working the counter was very friendly and helpful!

Cottages were wiped off the beach, the train trestle was damaged and the Carolina Yacht Club had to be completely rebuilt. A few smaller storms hit in the early 1900s but none did extensive damage. The next big hit came from Hurricane Hazel, which made landfall on October 15, 1954 at Holden Beach. This was the third named hurricane to hit the area within 7 weeks and is the only category 4 hurricane to make landfall in North Carolina. The storm headed up the coast devastating Yaupon Beach, Long Beach and Southport before hitting Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach. Hurricane Connie hit the beach in 1955 and caused damaged to Johnnie Mercer’s pier and other houses along the beach. Hurricane Bertha and Hurricane Fran hit within months of each other in 1996, completely wiping out the beaches’ fishing piers and causing hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.[8][9] At 11:15am UTC on September 14, 2018, Hurricane Florence made landfall less than a mile south of Wrightsville Beach as a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 90 mph (150 km/h).

*GRAPHIC* SHARK BITES SPEARFISHERMAN IN FLORIDA KEYS

Check out our new video from a few recent trips!

Follow me @parketsimon on Instagram for more spearfishing and dive content!

The short clip of me getting bit by a 7-8ft reef shark. We were spearfishing near Middle Sambos reef off Boca Chica in the Florida Keys when this shark came up behind us.

He first went at my dive buddy Justyn but immediately turned toward me. He first bit my left fin then took a piece out of the right fin before biting my leg and cutting the speargun line. I assumed he was trying to steal the black grouper I was holding but, after I lost the grouper and watched it swim to the bottom, the shark kept coming at us! Justyn went back down for my gun and actually shoved it in the sharks mouth! The shark then took it straight to the bottom while we rushed back to the boat and safety. Always dive with a buddy and someone who is trained in first aid! I would not have made it back to the boat without the help of another strong swimmer and would have bled out had we not been able to apply proper first aid immediately. The shark tore through the skin, fat tissue, muscle sheath, muscle, and unfortunately my tibial artery which caused me to lose more than a liter of blood.

This clearly could have been much worse! Happy to still have my leg even with a piece missing! And we even got my Koah speargun back!!!

    ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????

    0:33 - OH GAWD SHARK!
    0:48 - Ew...
    3:30 - SHARKS??
    3:45 - AW F*CK

Thanks to everyone that was there or came to help!

Why Is Damon Dash In Lifetime’s Documentary?

Damon Dash is speaking out about R. Kelly's relationship with then-underage singer Aaliyah. The record executive and former manager of Jay-Z is interviewed in Surviving R. Kelly, Part II: The Reckoning, the follow-up series to last year's explosive documentary detailing sexual abuse allegations against R&B star R. Kelly. In the first new episode airing on Lifetime Thursday (9 EST/PST), Dash says Aaliyah tried to distance herself from Kelly after their secret marriage when she was just 15. Kelly was recently charged with bribing an Illinois government official in August 1994 to obtain a fake ID for the singer, who was illegally married to Kelly for six months before her parents annulled the marriage in February 1995.

Mini-golf challenge - Long, fast greens haunt putters at Shipwreck Point

    By John Staton, [email protected]

    Tuesday

    Jul 28, 2009 at 10:36 AM

Editor's note: In 2004, StarNews writers John Staton and Amy Hotz challenged each other to a series of match-ups at nine mini-golf courses. The Hotz won the marathon series by only a couple of strokes over The Statonator. In the spirit of summer fun - and to give area courses a once-over - The Hotz-Statonator Challenge is being renewed. Through Labor Day, we'll feature one course per week in Play, with a corresponding video online.
The Hotz and I were in for a little surprise when we showed up at pirate-themed Shipwreck Point Golf in Surf City.
For one, the course was closed when we arrived at 11 a.m., but by the time we got inside a little after 1 p.m., we found out that there were two 18-hole mini-golf courses instead of just one, so we got to play twice as much as we were expecting to.
Kind of appropriate, considering that we've extended our mini-golf challenge to cover all 11 establishments in New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick counties. (We were originally going to play six, but we found out about five more places.)
So avast, ye putt-happy mateys, and join us on the perilous greens of this sometimes scary Surf City course.
    Course: Shipwreck Point Golf
Location/contact: 107 Charlie Medlin Drive, Surf City. 329-4653
    Cost/hours: 1-10:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 1-10 p.m. Sunday-Tuesday. $7 adults and $5 kids before 6 p.m., $8 and $6 after 6 p.m. To play both courses, it's $10.50 and $7.50 before 6 p.m., $12 and $9 after.
The course: Pirates is the theme. As in, you're playing a course on a watery tropical island that was designed by shipwrecked pirates. Or something like that.
Level of difficulty: Above average. The greens are generally very long and crazy fast, and tend to punish you anytime your balls touches the sides.
Fun factor: Medium. The holes can be frustratingly difficult, so it probably depends on your outlook on life.
Best hole: Let's go with hole No. 7 - aka "the cave hole" - on the Pirate's Curse course. A straight shot, but it's nice and cool in there.
    Maintenance of greens: Excellent
Par: The Daghar's Revenge course is 41, and the Pirate's Curse course is 42.
Staton's score: 51 on the Daghar's Revenge course (no holes-in-one), 49 on the Pirate's Curse course (one hole-in-one). 335 after seven courses.
Hotz's score: 45 on the Daghar's Revenge course (no holes-in-one), 53 on the Pirate's Curse course (no holes-in-one). 324 after seven courses.
After seven courses (at six establishments): Hotz 4, Staton 2, with one tie
The final word: If you play just one course, go with the Pirate's Curse. It's more fun.
    John Staton: 343-2343

    Shipwreck Point Miniature Golf

Shipwreck Point Mini Golf is Surf City’s only mini-golf course and has supplied visitors with family fun for the past 20 years. It features 2 18-hole golf courses that mimic Topsail Island’s pirate history. Try your hand at Captain Dagger’s Revenge or The Pirates Curse but look out for their waterfalls and rock obstacles. Navigate the courses alongside the blue waters of their river through the cave of treasures but be careful not to run into Captain Dagger or his crew. Shipwreck Point Golf has been recently renovated with all new greens and pirate décor to enhance your experience and provide plenty of opportunity for photos. They are not only handicap accessible but also welcome well-behaved, leashed pets but please ask prior to arrival due to crowd size.
