Georgia permit test: How to prepare and pass!

Are you ready to spread your wings and drive? If so, then it’s time to get a Learner’s Permit. The first step is to prepare and pass the Georgia permit test. You may be excited or even a little bit nervous. That’s normal and expected.

Keep in mind that your newfound independence comes with brand new responsibilities and dangers. The best advice for new teen drivers is to watch for bumps along the way, but enjoy every mile of the journey.

Georgia Permit Test: How to prepare for it

Many teens often feel nervous about passing the written Georgia permit test. This is completely natural, so you are not alone. It’s quite common to feel overwhelmed and nervous before a big change – getting a driver’s license is a big deal!

The first step is to study the official Georgia Driver’s Manual, which can be found at any Georgia DDS office. You can also study and read the manual online by clicking here. Regard this manual as your go-to guide for everything from A-Z that you need to know to pass the Georgia permit test.

Study the Driver’s Manual

Once you have your Driver’s Manual, read the entire book and study the information like you would for a school test. Highlight important points and then re-read them a second time. The info from the Manual will turn into questions on your test, so you want to be as familiar with it as possible.

Georgia Permit Test: Practice makes perfect

In Georgia, you can take a Driver’s Ed class when you’re 14-years-old. The 30-hour class is required for teens that want to get a license at the age of 16. By taking the class early, you will learn about road rules and more. It will actually help you pass the Georgia permit test because the material you need to know will be fresh in your mind. It’s not necessary to take the class before the Georgia permit test, but it can help ensure success.

Once you’ve taken a Driver’s Ed class or read and studied the Georgia Driver’s Manual, it’s time to take a few practice tests online. This will help you prepare for the Georgia permit test and will allow you to see if you fully understand the information in your manual.

Currently, three practice tests are available online, so try to take all three. Click here to take a practice test. The general knowledge exams include questions on road signs and a Road Rules Test.

Georgia permit test: Gather your documents

After successfully passing a few practice tests, it’s time to head to the DDS, right? Nope, not yet. You and your parents must first gather six important documents to take with you. These documents include

  1. One proof of identity (passport, birth certificate)
  2. One proof of social security number (W-2, social security card)
  3. Two proofs of residence (utility bill, financial statement, etc.)
  4. One proof of US citizenship
  5. Georgia Certificate of Attendance form notarized by your high school. You must request this form from your school office and they often request 3-5 days to get it for you. The Certificate of Attendance is valid for 30 days or from May-August in the summer. Head to the Georgia DDS website for more information about required documents.

Georgia permit test: Time to head to the DDS

Alrighty then. You have prepared for the Georgia permit test, taken the practice tests and gathered your required documents. So, what’s next? Yep, it’s now time to head to a DDS office to take your Georgia permit test.

The DDS offices administer written tests Tuesday through Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday are typically less busy than Tuesday, Friday or Saturday. Click here to find a location close to your home.

Georgia permit test: In review

Although it may seem overwhelming, passing the Georgia permit test is actually pretty easy if you follow these steps.

  1. Get the Georgia Driver’s Manual (or find it online).
  2. Study the book or the online version.
  3. Take and pass at least three Georgia permit practice tests.
  4. Gather your documents ahead of time.
  5. Take and pass your Georgia permit test at any DDS location.

Once you pass the exam (and an eye exam), your picture will be taken and you will pay the $10 fee. You’ll be given a paper copy of your Learner’s Permit. The hard copy arrives in the mail usually within 2-4 weeks.

What’s next after passing the
Georgia permit test?

Yippee! You have your Georgia Learner’s Permit, so you’re ready to hit the road, right? Nope, not so fast, speedy. With a Learner’s Permit, you have permission to drive ONLY with a passenger who is at least 21 years old and has an unexpired Class C driver’s license.

In order to get your actual driver’s license at 16 or 17 years of age, Georgia Law requires that you take an approved Driver’s Ed course, like the one offered at Drive Smart Georgia, a AAA-certified driving school.

You also must have 40 hours of driving experience (6 at night), plus pass the road test, which can be taken no sooner than one year and one day after getting your Learner’s permit.

Know the laws

Joshua’s Law was passed in Georgia to help keep new drivers safe. Auto accidents remains the #1 cause of death among teens. So, it’s critical to follow the requirements to the tee, not just because it’s the law, but because they could quite possibly save your life.

Teen driver fatalities have decreased by 60% since Joshua’s Law went into effect in 2007. That’s 181 young lives saved every year. To read more about this important Georgia law for teen drivers, check out this article.

DDS Driver Handbook in Georgia

Commercial Driving Manual

If you're applying for a commercial driver's license (CDL) in Georgia, you should read the GA Commercial Driver's Manual (REV 2017). Similar to the standard driver's handbook, you can access your commercial driving manual:

In this comprehensive driver's handbook for commercial vehicles, you'll find information about the following subjects:

  • Transporting cargo safely.
  • CDL disqualifications.
  • Knowledge and skills CDL tests.

Read below for details about CDL test information found in the DMV manual.

Studying the Commercial Driver's Handbook

The DMV handbook is a good resource to help you prepare for CDL tests in Georgia.

The written CDL test asks questions about the material in the driving manual. You can read and study the Georgia driver's handbook to prepare for the tests. CDL practice tests can also help you make sure you're really ready for the test.

In addition to using the DMV manual to prepare you for your written test, you can also use it to get ready for your Georgia CDL driving test.

While you'll need driver training to learn the skills you need for the test, you'll find detailed information about the CDL road test in the commercial driver's manual, including how the driving test is scored.

To learn more about commercial licenses, training, and other topics, please visit our section for Commercial Drivers in Georgia.

Parent/Teen Driving Guide

The GA DDS offers a guide for parents and teenage drivers to supplement online or classroom driver's education programs.

This DMV handbook for parents explains how to safely and effectively supervise your teen's driving and instill safe driving practices. You'll find helpful lesson plans and advice throughout the parents' driving manual.

In addition to the parent's DMV handbook, you may also want to read the Georgia driver's handbook to ensure that you are familiar with the rules and regulations that it covers.

To learn more about how to obtain your first driver's license, visit our Applying for a New Teen License in Georgia page.

Access the Georgia Vehicle Code

You can browse the Georgia Motor Vehicle Code online for information about GA traffic offenses, registration, licensing, and actions against out-of-state drivers.

The Vehicle Code is comprised of the state laws related to motor vehicles, including licensing, registration, and operation. The code has more detail than DMV handbooks or driving manuals.

Georgia's Vehicle Code can be a more helpful resource than a driver's manual if you get a traffic ticket or have a violation.

The code's detailed information can help you understand if you've committed a violation and what kind of punishment you might be facing. Unlike the Georgia driver's handbook, which is designed to teach readers about driving laws, the Vehicle Code is the actual law itself.

For information on what to do if you're charged with a traffic violation, visit our page about Traffic Tickets. If you want to fight a traffic ticket, you may want to consider hiring a traffic ticket attorney.
