Community mourns passing of former mayor and businessman Sam Baca

Staff at Baca's Funeral Chapel in Deming in in a somber state and saddened at the passing of Sam Baca.
Sam Baca

DEMING – The community of Deming is mourning the death of Sam Baca. Baca was found in his home Wednesday morning where he had passed on of natural causes in his sleep.

Baca, 75, was owner of Baca’s Funeral Chapels in Deming and Silver City, NM and New Mexico Granite Co. He also served as Mayor of the City of Deming for five consecutive terms.

“We are shocked at Sam’s passing, said Ron DeFoor, partner at Baca’s Funeral Chapel in Deming. “He had open-heart surgery in October and was gaining his strength back and showing daily improvement. He had a vital interest in our community and is sorely missed.

DeFoor has been a partner with Baca for the past 34 years.

Baca also previously owned a funeral chapel in Las Cruces before he sold it to Raul Delgado who began his career in Deming.

Much of Deming’s economic growth can be attributed to former Mayor Baca ad his working relationship with former City of Deming Administrator John Strand.

In the early 1970s, Baca purchased Wheeler’s Mortuary from Francis Wheeler and built the business in 1975 to what it is now.

“This is a very somber mood and day,” DeFoor said. “Sam was thorough in his wished and we are in the process of carrying those wishes.”

The Mahoney Funeral Home, that had been serving southwestern New Mexico since before the turn of the century in Deming, was brought into Baca’s circle in 1984.  Three years later Heather Mortuary in Lordsburg became a part of Baca's flagship and in 1987 Baca's of Silver City was opened to further expand the brand.

Current City of Deming Mayor Benny Jasso posted on Facebook Thursday morning:

On behalf of the City of Deming, I would like to issue our sincere condolences to the family of former Mayor Sam Baca. The community has lost a great friend and mentor. Your generosity touched the lives of so many people. Yu will be missed! Thank you, Sam!

Deming Public School Board member Mary Lou Cameron posted: We have lost a giant in our community. RIP.

New Mexico State Representative Candie Sweetser is owner of Deming Radio (KOTS-KDEM) in Deming. She stated: “Sam was such a kind and gentle man. He cared deeply about our community and every family who lived here. His calming presence was so appreciated.

"He was supportive on so many levels. He was one of the first to congratulate me for taking the leap of business ownership when we bought the Deming radio stations in 1990, and one of the first to congratulate me for stepping into the political arena when I first ran for office in 2016. He will be greatly missed.

"I remember reporting on Deming City Council meetings when he was mayor. He welcomed input, was never impatient with residents, was never self-serving, and he always looked at the bigger picture of what would be good for Deming, Luna County and entire region."

Elena Ornelas worked at Baca’s Funeral Chapel for 30 years before retiring in 2016.

“He was a wonderful boss,” she said. “He was always there for us and very professional and generous in his work. A lot of people don’t know how generous he really was.”

Baca had a liver transplant five years ago at the Mayor Clinic in Arizona. He funded La Casita, a home in Scottsdale, AZ for families who could not afford a hotel room while receiving care at the Mayo Clinic.

Baca also funded the restoration of his childhood church in Mimbres, NM. “He would take us there each year for the Dia de San Lorenzo celebration,” Ornelas said. “I am devastated and heart-broken. It is a big loss. He was such a good person.”

Hospice Collaboration

The National Hospice Organization and its standards document recognizes the significant role of Cremation-With-Care professionals in collaborating with the hospice team at the time of death.

Cremation-With-Care funeral home providers appreciate the trust that families and hospice workers place in us and we constantly strive to be deserving of that trust. At no time will family members be without support. The strong attachments and trust developed in one supportive environment (hospice) are shared and transferred to another (Cremation-With-Care funeral home provider) as the family moves through the process of dying, death and bereavement.

Hospice Care includes care of the patient and family prior to the time of death, at the time of death, and care of the family during the bereavement period. For this reason Cremation-With-Care cremation providers have become an integral part of hospice care by bridging the gap between the time of death and bereavement care. When you consider the philosophy of hospice and funeral service, it is clear why the continuum of care provided by our professional staff is a "natural extension" of hospice care. Cremation-With-Care cremation providers and hospice caregivers work closely together in order to meet the total needs of families. With greater understanding of each other’s care, areas of expertise and resources, hospice workers and our caring staff work together to plan a course which makes for a more natural transition of care at the time of death and in caring for the survivors in the months following the death.

Trust and confidence

Over the last 30 years I have personally seen thousands of families through one of life's most stressful situations, the loss of a loved one. What I've learned from my decades of experience is this...what matters most to those who are dealing with a death is guidance and understanding. Therefore I have selected funeral homes across America whose promise to their community is radically different from the others. They pledge to uphold the highest level of ethical business standards and believe that they have a unique responsibility to honor the dignity of the deceased, to aid and counsel the family in time of grief, and to encourage remembrance with each family within its own traditions, culture and financial means.

Ensure That Your Wishes Are Fulfilled

Peace of Mind.

Cremation-With-Care funeral home providers work with leaders in the financial services sector who provide safe, stable & sound solutions for the funeral industry. The funds are placed in an insurance policy, trust, or an annuity and remain there until the death occurs. Pre-payment also protects against inflation and price increases because no further charges are made on the items selected by you.

Prepare For The Unexpected

Setting aside funds and leaving specific information regarding your own personal desires will greatly ease your family's burden of making decisions and is one of the best ways to help your family during their difficult time of grief and loss. Most important, they will not have to try and guess what arrangements you would have wanted. It’s actually comforting to the people left behind knowing that you had a say in your own farewell.

Silver City - It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Jose Luis (Joe) Gonzalez, 69 formerly of Mesquite, NM. Joe passed away on March 27, 2021 at Mt. View Regional Hospital. Joe was born on Nov. 28, 1951 in San Antonio, TX to Artemio and America Gonzalez. Having come from a hard working family, Joe began working at the age of ten alongside his father and brother, Artemio, Jr. in Chandler, AZ. The family later re-located to Las Cruces in August 1966, where his father purchased Taylor Farms. This move set the wheels in motion, and began a life-long career for Joe in the dairy business.

Joe was President and Manager of Gonzalez Dairy, Inc. for thirty seven years. He served as Vice President on the local Dairy Producers of New Mexico Board. He was also a board member of Dairy Max, the local state/regional promotion board. Joe served two terms as a National Dairy Board Director for Region 4 and also served on the (DMI) Dairy Management, Inc. board.

He was a devoted and loving husband to Sally, his wife of thirty-eight years. Having met Sally at the bank where she worked and he did his banking, their relationship began a new and long lasting journey for both.

For relaxation, his semi-retirement gave him the opportunity to work on many homemade rustic projects to the delight of each recipient. Those surviving Joe, is Sally his wife, brother, Artemio, Jr. (Gloria), sisters, Maria Etie (Mike), Iris Baca, Gloria Nivens (Mark), son, Michael Gonzalez, daughter, Linda Jones. Those that Joe especially loved and served is niece, Monica Leavy, and her children, Angel, Abel, Aiden Michael, Ameris, Austin, and great nephew, Thomas, Jr. Joe was known for his quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor. He loved his family members deeply, and worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Gonzalez families owned businesses in Mesquite, NM. He will be missed by family members, friends, and by all who knew him.

Arrangements were entrusted to Baca's Funeral Chapels, in Deming, NM. A small gathering took place to celebrate Joe's life. There will be no further memorial.

Home baca funeral

Lena woke up from the fact that she felt cramped and hot. All around was a complete darkness, even if the eye. Here is a drunken devil, she thought in half-oblivion, trying to move away from the body that had piled on her from behind.

Funeral Care Center Tour

Bus, everything was great. Rush hour, a lot of people. Crush, crowded. I pressed close to her from behind.

Now discussing:

I had to stop aiming for a moment. I raised my hands. She pulled the T-shirt off me and threw it on the floor.
