Hover-1 vs. Segway: Which hoverboard is best?

If you want to slow down your speed on a hoverboard, simply tilt your feet backward to trigger the sensor to break. And just before you come to a complete stop, step off the back of your board to safely dismount.

Should you get a Hover-1 or a Segway?

There have been plenty of improvements to battery technology in recent years, which have prompted the rapid growth of Personal Electric Vehicles (PEV). These motorized, micro-mobile devices transport individuals at slower speeds, usually around 16 miles per hour. They are earth-friendly and have zero emissions. You can find them nearly everywhere, from city streets and sidewalks to parks and even shopping malls.

Both Hover-1 hoverboards and Segway vehicles are considered PEV class vehicles, but each has its own unique features and characteristics. And there are plenty of things to think about before deciding if a hoverboard or Segway is right for you.

What to consider before choosing a hoverboard or Segway

The device’s size, weight and features determine how easy it is to haul your PEV around. This is especially important if you plan on boarding public transportation. It’s also crucial to understand how it folds down and stores away. If you have tight quarters at home, it’s best to find something that collapses down easily.

It’s good to know how often you plan on using your hoverboard or Segway, and how much riding time and distance you plan on between charges. If possible, make sure a single battery charge will take you where you want to go and back again.

Will you ride on sidewalks and pavement or off-road? Do you think you’ll ride to work or just use your hoverboard or Segway for leisurely rides? Whatever your answer is, you’ll want them to be compatible with your terrain.

Learning curve and legalities

Some hoverboards and Segways require more skill and hand-eye coordination. If you find you have challenges with maintaining balance, you might want to find a PEV that is more user-friendly. Also, laws vary by city and state for PEV usage. For example, in California, you can drive electric scooters on the street. However, they are prohibited on sidewalks. Check with your local government for information about any rules and regulations. No matter where you live, you should wear a helmet when you use a hoverboard or Segway.

Hoverboards are motorized, self-balancing scooters or balance boards. They have a supportive frame that keeps a level surface between two parallel wheels. It has sensors that detect speed and any tilting based on the user’s balance. These sensors send data to the gyroscopes, which helps the board keep the rider upright.

There are no external steering wheels, stabilizers or brakes to control the hoverboard’s movement. The rider’s feet determine the device’s motion by moving their feet at different angles. The infrared LED light tells the logic board to stay in place when the rider’s feet are flat. When the rider leans forward, this triggers the sensors and tells the logic board to turn the wheels.

  • The Hover-1 devices are very portable since they are lightweight and easy to carry.
  • The Horizon and Titan models can carry their rider up to 8.4 miles on one charge. The Ultra model, however, will carry its rider for 12 miles on a single battery charge.
  • And some models include an app that tracks your ride in real-time using GPS, monitors battery life and plays your favorite tunes using wireless Bluetooth speakers.
  • Hover-1 offers hoverboard models with wheel sizes from 6.5-10 inches. And the larger wheel sizes allow you to take them off-road.
  • Hover-1 models are reasonably priced from about $150-$300.
  • The Ultra and Chrome models do not include the app. So if this is important to you, make sure to purchase an H1, Horizon, Nomad or Titan model.
  • The battery recharge times vary from 2-4 hours, depending on the model. This longer charging time may be an issue if you want to head back out and the battery isn't full yet.

Differing from the Hover-1, the Segway begins to move when the rider leans forward. The motors spin both wheels to propel it forward and keep the vehicle from tilting over. When the rider leans the machine backward, the motors spin both wheels in the reverse direction.

The Segway Ninebot S Smart Self-Balancing Electric Scooter comes equipped with a short knee control bar, and you can initiate turns when you squeeze your legs together. The Segway Ninebot S-Max uses a handlebar control to turn, much like previous Segway models and the commercial-grade Segway i2 SE personal transporter.

Other than the control handle, the most significant difference between a Segway and a Hover-1 is its size. Segways have a robust overall design with large wheels and weigh upward of 50 kilograms.

  • The Ninebot S and Ninebot S Max, in particular, have plenty of great features. And both easily achieve high speeds from 10-12.4 miles per hour.
  • They also have great battery life, which lasts between 13.7-23.6 miles on a single charge.
  • The Segway app provides vehicle remote control, speed adjustment, anti-theft protection, vehicle self-diagnose and more. And its sturdy build makes it more durable than its competitors.
  • The Segway is not prone to portability and is too heavy for most riders to carry. They also are not optimal for tight spaces since they consume more storage space than the Hover-1.
  • Segway models also take quite a while to charge and require three hours to reach a full charge.
  • And most of their models are relatively pricey. The Segway Ninebot S costs over $500, and the Segway Ninebot S-Max is almost $1,000.

Should you get a Hover-1 or Segway hoverboard?

It all depends on your usage. If you are looking for a well-built hoverboard for the kids, the Hover-1 H1-100 Electric Hoverboard Scooter with Infinity LED Wheel Lights is a good choice. It has a built-in speaker and has a very stylish design. If you want a lightweight hoverboard for fun, light-duty commuting at an economical price, the Hover-1 Ultra is a wise choice.

For buyers with a larger budget, both the Segway Ninebot S and the Max version hoverboards are great options for commuters and off-road explorers alike. They create a robust device with good speed, a smooth ride and excellent range.

Safety Measures

In 2013 Hoverboard or self-balancing scooter came out in the market by China. Slowly it created a buzz and its fame spread everywhere. But a few years later, problems started to arise. Many people were complaining about short-circuiting in battery and even explosion.

Many get injured because of the battery explosion. After a few months, hoverboards got banned in many countries. In 2019 CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) of America announced some tests and certifications to be passed by hoverboard companies to continue to trade in the market. After the announcement, every Hoverboard company started to comply with the standards, and things began to change.

Hover 1 Company is not different in that case. Safety is the number one priority for this brand. Every Model that hover-1 offers is UL certified, and they are serious about their quality and certification issue. Each hover-1 hoverboard has a battery cover to protect the rider from any battery-related accident.

They are also water-resistant in most of the case. Things to note: Water-Resistant does not mean Waterproof. Don’t go out with your hoverboard during rain, and do not use them in a water-clogged area. It can damage the battery and also can cause a short circuit.

Also, pay minute attention to charging the battery. You shouldn’t overcharge it and do not leave it to charging overnight. Also, use an authorized charger that comes with the hover-1 hoverboard product and try to charge the board while you first bring it home.

Use the charger that comes with the board in the box. If you use a different charger other than the original one, then use a charger that complies with the voltage instructed in the user manual of the hoverboard.

After-sale service is very important for any products let alone consumer products or virtual products. Hover1 brand provides a great service in this manner. They have a full-fledged website that is created to provide you a one-stop solution to any problems regarding your hover 1 board.

They will contact you within 24 hours.  They also have a large collection of FAQ sections where most of the answers to your probable problems are given. Hover1 brand provides 90 days warranty for parts and labor on manufacturing defects. This warranty covers the motor, gyroscope sensor, battery, motherboard, light controller, and Bluetooth.

Note: You need an RMA number to apply for a warranty. You need to purchase from a verified supplier to avail warranty.

The 9 best hoverboards you can buy in 2021

LOOKING for a slice of the future? Grab yourself one of the best hoverboards and you’ll be gliding around effortlessly on your own personal transport.

Hoverboards are a relatively cheap way of feeling like you’re in the future; just lean forward and off you go.

Also known as self-balancing scooters, hoverboards are simple wheeled platforms with powerful motors that you control with your body weight (sorry to disappoint: they don’t actually hover).

They’re a great toy too, with nifty features like built-in Bluetooth speakers and LED lights making them perfect for gadget-obsessed kids.

You’ve got to be careful when buying one, though. Back when the hoverboard craze was at its peak, there were many reports of dangerous exploding batteries — so when shopping for the best hoverboard, look for those that are CE and UL2272 certified – these safety standards should give you peace of mind.

The type of tires and battery life are also important things to consider when buying one of these futuristic boards, depending on where you’re planning to ride it.

And speaking of which, you can only ride a hoverboard under certain conditions in the UK. Read on for more information about that, and for our pick of the best boards on the market right now.

What is a hoverboard?

Generally speaking, the term hoverboard refers to two-wheeled, electric, portable devices.

Hoverboards have been for a long time a persistent element of futuristic fiction, but today they are very much real.

Also commonly known as self-balancing scooters, these devices traditionally have a central platform for the rider, which is situated between two wheels and powered by large lithium-ion batteries.

What hoverboards are safe?

If you’ve been into self-balancing scooters for a while, you will remember the wave of “fake” hoverboards that hit the UK in 2015.

Back then, figures by the National Trading Standards revealed that 17,000 hoverboards imported from outside the EU had been examined and over 15,000 (88%) of them had failed basic safety checks.

Those hoverboards were deemed at risk of catching fire or exploding, and since then public scrutiny of the devices has been consistent.

So how do you know that a hoverboard is safe?

First of all, it is necessary to mention that, apart from one exception, hoverboards do not require any ad-hoc certifications to be considered “safe”. In fact, when it comes to safety, these futuristic gadgets are mostly seen by regulators as another form of consumers’ electronic devices, and as such are deemed safe if they can satisfy one or more of the following standards.

The UL 2272 certification

Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) is an American firm whose speciality is the testing of electrical equipment.

Specifically, UL certifications assess the standards of internal components and test electrical devices to determine if they can withstand extreme conditions without causing harm to users.

The UL 2272 certification, in particular, refers to the “Standard for Electrical Systems for Personal E-Mobility Devices”, and it is the most widely and sought-after certification when it comes to the safety of hoverboards and other E-Mobility Devices.

All in all, if a hoverboard is UL 2272-certified, you can be sure it is safe to use.

Safety Data Sheets

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are documents required by the REACH Regulation that list information relating to occupational safety and health for the use of various substances and products.

SDS are not primarily intended for use by the general consumer, but since hoverboards’ batteries could be potentially classified as hazardous materials, some manufacturers are using SDS as an additional sign of safety for customers.

RoHS Compliance

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive is also known as the Directive 2002/95/EC and originated in the European Union in 2006.

RoHS restricts the use of specific hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic devices, either because they are dangerous to the environment and can pollute landfills, or because they are perilous to people in terms of occupational exposure during manufacturing and recycling processes.

How to ride a hoverboard

Before jumping on a hoverboard for the first time, make sure you are wearing a helmet and wrist guards, as well as knee and elbow pads.

Once you are ready, place the overboard on an even surface, and step on it with one foot, making sure the board is flat.

Then step on it with the other foot, trying to keep it apart from the first one as much as possible for maximum control.

The rest is a matter of practice. Slowly lean forward using your ankles, without bending at the waist, to move forward.

To turn right push down your right toes, to turn left your left toes.

When it’s time to stop, simply to leaning and dismount using your dominant foot.

Are hoverboards banned in the UK?

Hoverboards are legal to buy and possess in the UK, as long as certain guidelines are met.

Given the recent streak of traffic collisions involving hoverboards in the past few years, however, the UK government has banned their use on public footpaths as well as roads.

That being said, hoverboards can be legally used on private property in the United Kingdom.

What to look for in a hoverboard?

There are several things to consider when purchasing a hoverboard. The main one is undoubtedly its safety certifications.

It’s not a good idea to buy a hoverboard that is not certified for safety, as this could cause harm to yourself or those around you.

Secondly, you need to consider speed, as well as battery life — make sure to get one that fits both your style and needs.

How long does it take to charge a hoverboard?

Hoverboards with not very well optimised batteries usually take between four and six hours to fully charge.

Mid-range quality ones range between two and three hours, and high-end ones usually take 90 minutes or two hours to complete a full charging cycle.

What is the best cheap hoverboard?

Typically, the cheapest hoverboards cost in the region of £150, although prices can vary wildly.

If you pay anything less than that you’ll start sacrificing features, and more importantly safety. The cheapest hoverboard in our list is the Hover-1 Rival Black Hoverboard, currently available from Argos for £150.

Are all hoverboards self-balancing?

For a hoverboard to be officially classified as such, it needs to be self-balancing.

However, not all balancing electric scooters are called hoverboards.

The self-balancing features can take a little getting used to, but once you’ve mastered them, they’re easy and safe.

In our guide you’ll find the best hoverboards around that don’t skimp on safety, so you can happily roll around with your peace of mind intact.

Where to buy hoverboards?

There’s a number of good retailers that sell hoverboards. Amazon, hoverboards.co.uk, Argos are a good place to start your search, just make sure you buy a hoverboard with a UL 2272 so you can be sure it’s safe.

How much do hoverboards cost?

Depending on what features you want your hoverboard to have, you can look to spend between £200 and £500.

For a standard hoverboard that will work on flat surfaces, £200 seems to be the going rate.

Which are the best hoverboards to buy

The Air by Hoverboard is a very good entry-point in the world of hoverboards, both for specifications and price.

The Hover-1 Rival is great if you want to save some money while still getting good value, and the Hip Hop Off-Road Hoverboard is one of the best choices for rough-terrain rides.

Also, the Segway Drift W1 is ideal is if you’re looking for a stylish and skating-like experience, and the SEGWAY Ninebot S is arguably the best for long commutes.

Hover-1 Ultra Hoverboard Review

Introduction

A good college student hoverboard, the Hover-1 Ultra is equipped with essential safety features and sturdy dual-motor capable of up to 7 mph and a 12-mile range. It may not be the fanciest hoverboard out there, especially because it doesn’t have Bluetooth speakers or an app, but it has other important features most riders want.

Range & Speed

Hover-1 Ultra 500W motor

The range and speed of the Hover-1 Ultra are pretty good, especially considering the relatively affordable price. At top speed, it can go 7 mph, which may not seem fast, but when you’re actually on the hoverboard, it will definitely feel fast enough. If you’re new to hoverboards, this speed will be just fine.

For range, the Hover-1 Ultra can go a max of 12 mph in “ideal conditions.” That means the rider is on the lighter side, they’re riding on smooth, flat ground, and they’re going at a moderate (not max) speed. When you go up hills, the board can travel 17-degree inclines. With its range and speed, this hoverboard is a good choice for riding around your neighborhood for fun, going across college campuses, or running quick chores.

Construction

The Hover-1 Ultra is built with dual 250-watt motors for a total of 500 watts. The motors can be operated independently or with both feet for smooth braking and turning. The battery is lithium-ion with 36 volts.

It takes a max of 4 hours to charge fully. As for weight, the hoverboard is about 25 pounds and can carry a rider up to 220 pounds. At a minimum, a rider should be at least 45 pounds, or the hoverboard won’t activate its self-balancing.

The Hover-1 Ultra’s wheels are 6.5-inches, indicating that this hoverboard is not meant for rough terrain or off-roading. You would need bigger wheels for that. The Ultra’s tires are non-pneumatic and solid, which means they are not filled with air and won’t need pumping. The disadvantage, though, is that airless tires tend to make for a rougher ride.

Hover-1 LED light hoverboard

Safety

The main selling point of this hoverboard is all its safety features. It’s fully UL-certified, which is a must for any safe hoverboard, and it has a battery shield for fire and overheat-protection.

It’s also water-resistant. Note that water-resistant does not mean waterproof, so don’t submerge the hoverboard. If riding in low light, there are LED lights on the front for visibility.

Be sure only to use the hoverboard charger cord that came with your hoverboard and never leave the hoverboard charging overnight.

Customer Service

On the Hover-1 website, under the Support and Troubleshooting tab, you can select your hoverboard and access a FAQ guide on various troubleshooting issues, product manuals, repair and replacement guides, and more. You can also directly submit a ticket to have a customer service rep address a specific issue.

According to the Hover-1 site, all hoverboards have a 120-day limited part and labor warranty. It covers defects with the motor, battery, motherboards, lights, controller, and gyroscopic sensor.

Downsides

The main downside to the Ultra is there are no app or Bluetooth speaker capabilities. That means you can’t control the hoverboard with your phone or see stats like your speed, distance traveled, etc.

There are battery indicators on the board, but a lot of people like to have that information right in their hands. When riding, keep an eye on your battery indicator, so you don’t end up stranded somewhere.

Green means the battery is above 50%, while red means it’s down to 20% or lower, and the hoverboard needs to be charged.

hover-1-ultra-unboxing-3-768x768

Who Should Buy The Hover-1 Ultra?

Hover-1 appears to be marketing this board primarily to college students who want a quick way to get around campus or explore their area.

It doesn’t have the construction or tire size for off-roading, so it’s definitely intended for an urban or suburban ride.

At under $300 (and sometimes under $200, if it’s on sale) it’s good for students on a budget or beginners who aren’t sure if they’re going to love a hoverboard.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a fully UL-certified, safe hoverboard without any frills, you’ll be happy with the Hover-1 Ultra hoverboard. While it doesn’t have extra features like an app or Bluetooth speakers, it does have a pair of sturdy motors that give you a max speed of 7 mph and a 12-mile range.

All in all, that’s about 4 hours of ride time per battery charge. This hoverboard is a good choice for college students who want a more interesting way to get around campus or for anyone who doesn’t need a board for long commutes and is cool with quick, fun trips.

The Ultra doesn’t quite make our Best Hoverboards of 2021 list, but it is a budget-friendly option – especially for kids and beginners.

Hover-1 Chrome Troubleshooting

The Bluetooth feature fails to connect with a device.

Ensure the Hover-1 is turned on with a solid green light displayed. On your device, go to Settings > Bluetooth and select HY-CHR. A voice-over will confirm connection by saying "paired". This step only needs to be completed the first time pairing to that device. The Hover-1 should now connect to the last device it paired with immediately after being turned on.

If your Bluetooth device is failing to pair with your Hover-1, make sure all other devices close by are turned off and disconnected. The Hover-1 can only pair with one device at a time.

If connection continues to "cut out" or fail at a reasonable distance, then the Bluetooth receiver must be replaced. You can find this guide here.

The Hover-1 only spins in circles when ridden.

Ensure rider's dominant foot is not applying more force than non-dominant foot. This will cause the dominant sides' wheel to spin faster. Stand flat on the board and slowly rotate feet forward from the ankle at the same time.

An incorrectly calibrated gyroscopic sensor will misinterpret weight positioning on the pads of the Hover-1. If it cannot determine which direction the rider is leaning or how far they are leaning, the wheels will not spin at the same speed, if at all. Learn how to re-calibrate your Hover-1 on page 16 of the operations manual.

If a motor wire is slightly unplugged, it will not receive its proper voltage and therefore not spin as fast as the other wheel. The wires can be inspected after disassembling your Hover-1. Learn how to disassemble the Hover-1 here.

The Hover-1 doesn't respond to the weight of a rider on the board.

After a crash, the battery may have been shifted within the Hover-1 casing. A dislodged battery could cause a number of small interference problems that can easily be remedied by moving it back into place. Learn how to set the battery back into place here.

The gyroscopic sensor may have been tweaked after a crash, requiring a recalibration. Learn how to re-calibrate your Hover-1 on page 16 of the operations manual.

It is possible the electrical components were damaged after a Hover-1 takes a spill. Learn how to replace your motherboard here.

The rider steps on the Hover-1 and red lights begin flashing on the fenders of the board. Then the board spins powerlessly out of control.

An uncalibrated gyroscopic sensor within the Hover-1 can cause red lights to flash on the fenders. Learn how to re-calibrate your Hover-1 on page 16 of the operations manual.

The flashing red lights are indicative of an internal problem within the Hover-1. Many of these internal problems lead back to a malfunction in the motherboard that will most likely require a replacement. Learn how to replace your motherboard here.

One wheel of the Hover-1 does not spin despite a rider attempting to operate it.

If any wire connected to the motherboard is not fully plugged in, the hoverboard has potential to not operate. Ensure that all connecting wires are fully plugged in. The wires can be inspected after disassembling your Hover-1. Learn how to disassemble the Hover-1 here.

Any damage to the motherboard within the hoverboard could result in a malfunction to that side of the board. Learn how to replace your motherboard here.

Ratings and Reviews

Annoyed.

So disappointed. I got this app last night and was using the app fine with the hoverboard. I wasn't that great so I was going around my kitchen. Then it lurched a little so I stepped off. Then the hoverboard STARTED SPINNING super fast In a circle on the kitchen floor, leaving track marks for me to pick up once my mom turned it off (and stubbed her toe hard in the process). So the next day I tried again, in the hope of getting the lights to work.
It kept saying it was disconnected and it never worked when I tried to reconnect it. It worked one time and it didn't last long. I also wish there was a way I could connect two hoverboards because my brother got one too and I thought I could connect two, but I can't. So sad and mad I wished it worked I really do. I mean if you are willing to try it go ahead because without all the horrible things it was fine..

Why this hoverboard is bad

I will say that the app was pretty cool, however the hoverboard was a huge letdown. I don’t recommend it for someone looking for a hoverboard. It was good the first 2-4 weeks but after that it just kept getting worse. The battery used to last around 2 hours when at full charge and now it only last around half an hour at full charge, on side of the hoverboard would stop working sometimes, the acceleration and traction aren’t that good, and it would just turn off sometimes when it’s not even at low charge. Don’t let the LED lights make you buy it now I know that doesn’t mean it’s better then other hoverboards, if your looking for a good hoverboard get the SWAGBOARD BEGINNER HOVERBOARD, T5 - RECERIFIED, everything bad about hover1 doesn’t happen with the hoverboard I just mentioned everything about the swagboard is amazing even though it doesn’t have LED lights this hoverboard is better then ones with led lights. Swagboard can actually take some damage and still me fine, with hover1 if you bump in to something with little force it will get absolutely destroyed. All hover board will get bad if you hit them too hard but hover1s durability is absolutely awful. I truly believe the people who gave this hoverboard a 5 star rating just got the hoverboard don’t buy this it’s a waste of money.

Upset

Every time I go to the app to go see how fast or the battery is keeps saying disconnected so every time I want to see it I have to remove it and then reinstall it and then it works it get really annoying too when I go out side and I try going fast but it beeps red and slows me down and I try to switch it to expert so I can go fast and it does not do that any more plus the same thing that happened to annoyed happened with me it went crazy and spun in circles and it was crazy it broke one of the vases in the living room and I got in trouble so I am not to happy with the app it is not that useful.
