PS Plus Free Games for August 2021 Are May 2020 All Over Again

By Joshua Duckworth

ShareTweetEmail

Due to their receptions, it's easy to draw a through line for comparison of the PS Plus free games for August 2021 and May 2020.

Near the end of 2020, PS Plus began ramping up it offerings in terms of size and scope. This PS Plus hot streak was mostly due to the then-upcoming launch of the PS5, with service keeping it up after release too. While not every fan was happy with every month, the wide appeal of each month's games meant plenty of fans were happy. However, the PS Plus free games for August 2021 have drawn a lot of criticism, and while it is not a 1:1 comparison to the situation in May 2020, it is very comparable.

Many may not remember, but the PS Plus free games for May 2020 received a very visceral reaction online. And while the August 2021 reaction has been much milder in comparison, the two months fall into the same traps.

PS Plus Free Games for May 2020 Debacle Explained

The first major problem with PS Plus' free games for May 2020 were high expectations. A widely-spread rumor prior to their reveal indicated fans would be getting Dying Light and Dark Souls: Remastered, which, when Cities Skylines and Farming Simulator 19 were inevitably revealed, was a bombshell waiting to explode. It did go off when fans created an online petition to change the games, which got a lot of attention, but it did not ultimately change the available games. The rumor was false to begin with, but many had taken it to heart. As such, the expectation of two big games replaced with two simulators crushed fans.

That was the second big problem with the May 2020 games. At this time, PS Plus had a pattern of one big game released alongside one more niche game (which is why the rumor should have never been believed), but two niche games was a big blow at the time. There wasn't really an appeal for anyone unless they specifically like city-building simulators or farming simulators. Neither game is bad in an of itself, but it didn't draw in a lot of fans.

PS Plus Free Games for August 2021 Compared to May 2020

The two problems that impacted how fans perceived the PS Plus free games for May 2020 are the exact problems that the August 2021 games have. First, expectations for PS Plus' monthly games are at an all-time high. There's no rumor to kickstart it, but it's the fact that Sony really hasn't dropped the ball 8 months into the year. With major PS5 releases, games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and more making their way on the service, getting a bad month upset many subscribers. Of course, it should be noted that even Sony is entitled to an "off" month, and these games will be replaced soon enough.

The second problem is also how they have limited appeal. Hunter's Arena: Legends is a battle royale game with PvE elements, but it's unlikely to take fans away from the big three battle royale games: Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Warzone. Tennis World Tour 2 would have a limited appeal, that being fans need to enjoy tennis, and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is a good game but the very premise is going to define how people approach it.

Overall, while PS Plus' August 2021 games may not hit the same mark as many other months this year, there's still time this year for more big bombshells from PS Plus. Fans should just be patient, perhaps give these games a chance, and see what else the service has in store for the year.

PS Plus free games for August 2021 will be available on August 3.

Free PS Plus Games for October 2021 May Restart PS5 Pattern

By Dalton Cooper

ShareTweetEmail

The free PlayStation Plus games for October 2021 may restart a pattern that was broken with the free PS Plus games for September 2021.

When Sony first released the PlayStation 5 last November, it made some changes to its PlayStation Plus subscription service. Instead of only giving away two free PS4 games every month to PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony threw a free PS5 game into the mix, giving subscribers three free games every month. And now that we're coming up on a full year of free PS5 PS Plus games, Sony has established a pattern with what fans can expect from PS5 games.

With the free PS5 PS Plus games, Sony has almost always given away new releases, with rare exceptions. Out of the 12 PS5 free PS Plus games that Sony has given away since the console's launch, 10 of those 12 have been new releases, while just two have been older games. At first, Sony giving away new games as the free PS5 PS Plus title seemed necessary since the console was brand new, but now that it's nearly a year old, some may have expected Sony to switch to older titles.

RELATED: Some PS Plus Subscribers Are Getting a Fourth, Halloween-Appropriate Game in October

After all, the free PS5 PS Plus game for September 2021 was Overcooked: All You Can Eat, a co-op party game that servced as a launch title for Sony's next-generation console. With the PS5 nearly a year old, one could hardly fault Sony for moving to older games for the free PS5 PS Plus offerings. There certainly wouldn't be an uproar like when Sony made Maneater a free PS Plus game and had to offer refunds. Besides Maneater and Overcooked, all the other free PS5 PS Plus games have been new releases for the PS5.

Free PS5 PS Plus Games List

  • Bugsnax (November 2020)
  • Worms Rumble (December 2020)
  • Maneater (January 2021)
  • Destruction AllStars (February 2021)
  • Maquette (March 2021)
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm (April 2021)
  • Wreckfest (May 2021)
  • Operation: Tango (June 2021)
  • A Plague Tale: Innocence (July 2021)
  • Hunter's Arena: Legends (August 2021)
  • Overcooked: All You Can Eat (September 2021)
  • Hell Let Loose (October 2021)

Despite this, it seems Sony is still going to be giving away brand new titles as the free PS5 PS Plus game offering for the most part. This is evidenced by Hell Let Loose being the free PS5 PS Plus game for the free PS Plus games for October 2021 lineup. Hell Let Loose, for the those who may be unfamiliar with it, is a large-scale World War 2 FPS multiplayer game that previously had a PS5-exclusive beta.

Once Tuesday, October 5 rolls around and the PlayStation Store updates, PS Plus subscribers will be able to add Hell Let Loose to their collection, marking yet another new PS5 game hitting the service. It will be interesting to see if November 2021 has anything similar in store for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Maybe next month will include yet another new game for PS Plus subscribers on PS5 to add to their collection, or maybe Sony will decide to release an older game instead.

Besides Hell Let Loose, the free PS Plus games for October 2021 also include Mortal Kombat X and PGA Tour 2K21 on PS4. The free PS Plus games for November 2021 will include two PS4 titles to go along with the free PS5 game, but their identity is a mystery at this point as well.

This gives you a great way to try PlayStation games you might not otherwise have played, whether they're indie titles that slipped under your radar or titles that were too expensive to buy.

Remember that PlayStation Plus games are only available for one month – so grab them while you can.

PS Plus free games: October 2021

Hell Let Loose (PS5)

Available for PS Fore (get it?), PGA Tour 2K21 brings the popular game of golf to life with stunning, real-life courses. You can also play online, customize your golfer and take part in custom tournaments.

Mortal Kombat X (PS4)

Crush bones, spill blood, and vanquish your enemies in Mortal Kombat X. The long-running franchise returns with a new robust roster of fighters, a cinematic-style presentation and so much more.

All three games will be available on Tuesday, October 5 and will be available until Monday, November 1.

PS Plus free games: September 2021

Overcooked: All You Can Eat! (PS5)

Hitman 2

Step into the polished shoes of Agent 47 in Hitman 2, and track and assassinate targets across a variety of exotic locations. With new ways to play, new game modes and new features, Hitman 2 lets your creativity (when it comes to killing) run wild.

Predator: Hunting Grounds

In this asymmetrical shooter, you'll either face off or take control of the Predator. Complete missions before the Predator hunts you down, or become the hunter yourself and use alien weaponry like the iconic shoulder-mounted Plasma Caster.

All three games will be available from Tuesday, September 7 to Monday, October 4.

PS Plus free games: August 2021

Hunter's Arena: Legends (PS5)

Hunter's Arena: Legends is a battle royale set in Ancient Asia, featuring 30-player PvP and PvE combat. If you love a battle royale, but have grown weary of Fortnite, Apex Legends and PUBG, then Hunter's Arena is well worth a go.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville (PS4)

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is a whacky first-person shooter that sees you partaking in a suburban skirmish, fighting for (you guessed it) either brainless zombies or fierce plantlife. Plants vs. Zombies is ridiculous fun and offers the perfect opportunity for players to jump into online multiplayer madness that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Tennis World Tour 2 (PS4)

For those who have had their tennis pro aspirations fueled by Wimbledon, Tennis World Tour 2 is well worth a go. Playing as the world's top players, Tennis World Tour sees you setting out to dominate the world circuit - topspinning, backhanding and serving your way to the top.

These titles are available from August 3 until September 6.

PS Plus free games: July 2021

A Plague Tale: Innocence (PS5)

This month's free PS5 title is A Plague Tale: Innocence, which has been upgraded to target 60fps at a native 4K resolution. You'll follow the tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo as they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (PS4)

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 brings the series' iconic zombies back into the fray, and includes a large-scale multiplayer battle royale mode called Blackout, which paved the way for Call of Duty: Warzone.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds (PS4)

Lay the smackdown in WWE 2K Battlegrounds in this over-the-top arcade action game. Pull off special abilities, make use of power-ups and enjoy classic match modes like steel cage matches and the Royal Rumble.

A Plague Tale: Innocence, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and WWE 2K Battlegrounds are available from July 6 to August 2.

PS Plus free games: June 2021

Operation: Tango (PS5)

Operation: tango is a cooperative spy adventure that sees you and a friend teaming up - one as a hacker and one as an agent - to bring a global tech menace down, using only your voice to communicate (so you do need a microphone to play). Solve puzzles together, execute missions across the globe and utilize a bunch of hi-tech tools to become an unstoppable duo. Operation: Tango is online co-op only.

Star Wars Squadrons (PS4)

Want to know how it feels to take part in a Star Wars space battle? Then you're going to want to try Squadrons. Squadrons sees you taking part in first-person multiplayer dog fights alongside a squad of other pilots - either the Empire or the New Republic. What's more, you also have the option to play Squadrons in PSVR for an even more immersive experience.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown (PS4)

A remaster of the classic 3D fighter, Virtua Fighter 5 is a must-play for those who love one-on-one fighting games. While the original was a classic, Virtua Fighter 5 makes plenty of improvements on the original including HD graphics and new online features.

Operation: Tango and Star Wars Squadrons are available from June 1 until July 5. Virtua Fighter 5 is available from June 1 until August 2.

PS Plus free games: May 2021

Wreckfest: Drive Hard, Die Last (PS5)

From the developers of FlatOut, Wreckfest is a vehicular combat racing game that sees players racing and upgrading old bangers, adding extra armor and making them aesthetically look more pleasing before sending them out to the racetrack/destruction derby. With online multiplayer allowing for up to 24 players, carnage is almost certain to ensue.

Wreckfest has previously released on last-gen consoles, but the PS5 version is releasing on the day it arrives on PS Plus - May 4. That means PS5 owners can get their hands on the next-gen version on day one, as long as you're an active PS Plus subscriber.

Battlefield 5 (PS4)

Battlefield 5 is a first-person shooter set in World War 22 and the most recent entry in the Battlefield franchise. Players have the choice of jumping into online multiplayer modes, such as Grand Operations and the cooperative Combined Arms, or to take on the single-player campaign War Stories.

Stranded Deep (PS4)

Open-world survival adventure Stranded Deep sees players stranded in the Pacific Ocean following a plane crash. It's up to you to survive, hunting for supplies and crafting weapons, tools and shelter to stay alive.

Wreckfest, Battlefield 5 and Stranded Deep are available from May 4 until May 31.

PS Plus free games: April 2021

Oddworld: Soulstorm (PS5)

Abe is back and, once again, this accidental hero turned revolution leader is trying to save his fellow Mudokons. This time there are more than 1000 Mudokons to save and teamwork is the name of the game - with your army of rebels using their collective energy to help Abe solve the various puzzles he encounters.

Soulstorm serves as the second game in the Oddworld quintology, but promises to look much better than ever before, with 2.9D environments and stunning visuals - at a greater scale.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will get access to three games in May: Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 5, Bugbear Entertainment’s Wreckfest, and Beam Team Games’ Stranded Deep. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Wednesday that the trio of PS Plus freebies will be available to download from May 4 to May 31.

Battlefield 5 is developer DICE’s return to the World War II era of shooters. First released in 2018, the PlayStation 4 game was supported through 2020 with a series of updates, including the addition of Battlefield’s foray into battle royale gameplay, Firestorm. DICE and publisher EA recently teased the impending reveal of Battlefield 6 (or whatever they may call it), which is slated for release later this year.

Wreckfest is Bugbear’s fantastic demolition derby racing game, and one of our favorites on Xbox Game Pass — so it’s a nice PlayStation Plus bonus. It came to PS4 in 2019, one year after its original release on PC. However, only PlayStation 5 owners will get Wreckfest as part of May’s PS Plus offerings.

Stranded Deep for PS4 puts players in the role of a plane crash survivor, who must fend for themselves on the open seas, managing their thirst, hunger, and exposure to the environment to survive. There’s also sharks.

April’s PlayStation Plus games (Oddworld: Soulstorm, Days Gone, and Zombie Army 4: Dead War) are still available to download through Monday, May 3.

Update (May 4): May’s PS Plus games are now live on the PlayStation Store:
