The Modern Warfare beta will come first to the PlayStation 4 where fans who have pre-ordered the game will have the chance to play it starting on Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. ET. Then the beta will go into its open access period on PS4 starting on Sept. 14 when anyone on the console can download and play the beta. This period will end on Sept. 16, when the beta will go down for a few days.

Starting on Sept. 19. to 20, the Modern Warfare beta will move to PC and Xbox One where players on those platforms who pre-ordered the game will be able to play the beta. Meanwhile, all PS4 players will continue to be able to play for free. Finally, from Sept. 21 to the 23, players on all platforms will be able to access the beta, whether they have pre-ordered or not.

You can download and try the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta for free right now on PC, PS4 or Xbox One, here’s how.

Activision’s 2019 reboot of the critically acclaimed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is slated for a late October release, but if you’re willing, you can try the game right now, for free. Initially available only to those who pre-ordered the game, the Modern Warfare open beta has now opened its doors to everyone across all platforms.

PC players will need to install and sign into the Battle.net client to download the beta, while PS4 and Xbox One owners can search their respective stores for “Modern Warfare: Open Beta” or add it to their library from the links provided on the official page for the open beta at callofduty.com/modernwarfare/beta. Note that on the Xbox One, only Xbox Live Gold subscribers are eligible.

From what we’ve seen so far, the game seems to be a more modern take on the original, with sniping having been made significantly more challenging. 360 no-scope sniper kills are likely to become a relatively rare sight, but all the more satisfying as a result. The time to kill has brought back down to where it was before Black Ops 4, which makes it feel more like a classic COD game – fast paced and unforgiving, where reflexes and aim consistently take precedence.

Of course, the best way to get a feel for the game is to try it out for yourself. You don’t have a lot of time, though, with the open beta ending in a little more than a day on September 23, 10AM PT.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 25.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta times, dates, how to get beta access and everything you need to know

Another year, another Call of Duty beta, this time the turn of Modern Warfare.

The Modern Warfare beta dates and times for two weekends in September have been confirmed, and though details of what exactly is included are thin on the ground, Activision has revealed there will be cross-play support on the second test and a some "surprises" along the way.

On this page:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta times for UK, US and Europe, plus all beta start dates and end dates explained

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta is available across two weekends, debuting first on PS4 then to PS4, Xbox One and PC one week later.

Second Modern Warfare beta weekend start times (all platforms):

  • Thursday September 19th to Friday 20th: Early Access on Xbox One and PC, Open Beta on PS4
  • Saturday September 21st to Monday 23rd: Open Beta on all platforms

The Modern Warfare beta start times for both Early Access dates across both weekends are as follows:

  • UK: 6pm (BST)
  • Europe: 7pm (CEST)
  • East Coast US: 1pm (EDT)
  • West Coast US: 10am (PDT)

As for the Modern Warfare Open Beta start time on each Saturday, Activision has yet to confirm any specifics - though our best guess is the same (6pm PST, 10am PDT) as mentioned above.

The Modern Warfare beta end time, meanwhile, is the same as the above start times.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta access explained

By pre-ordering any edition either digitally or through select retailers, you'll get early Modern Warfare beta access on the Thursday and Friday before the open beta kicks off over at the weekend - with PS4 early access available on the first weekend, and Xbox One and PC on the second.

If you don't pre-order, however, you'll still get Modern Warfare beta access - you just have to wait for the open beta dates that follow.

Finally, there's the story, with a handful of Modern Warfare campaign missions to complete, as well as how to kill a Juggernaut in Modern Warfare.

Everything else you need to know about the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta

There's not many specifics on what's included in the Modern Warfare beta - apart from "an epic and ever-changing series of maps, playlists, and other content drops throughout the Beta Test Weekends, with surprises and a great deal of content to access", according to Activision, but we do know:

  • The second beta weekend will feature Modern Warfare cross play support between consoles and PC.
  • If you aren't pre-ordering direct from digital stores, you need to enter your beta key into the official Call of Duty site and select the platform of your choice.
  • Modern Warfare beta pre-loading is available, so be sure to download it ahead of time so you can start playing as soon as it goes live.
  • If you downloaded the Modern Warfare alpha, that is a different client to the beta, and requires a separate download.
  • As with previous betas, progress or unlockables won't carry over to the full game. It's assumed, however, that PS4 players will have their progress kept from one beta weekend to the next.

The wait is almost over, Call of Duty fans. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare open beta begins on PlayStation 4 this week, but you can now officially pre-download it.

The open beta is a 37.965 GB download file on PS4. Due to the relatively large file size, players should take the opportunity to download the open beta before they can actually play it later this week.

To download the beta, simply go to the PlayStation Store and search for Modern Warfare. An option for the open beta should also appear in the “What’s Hot” section of the store.

Once you find the open beta, click on it and move one screen to the right. You’ll see an icon that says “download now” in the lower-left corner. Click that and the download button on the following screen to start downloading the beta file.
