What are the best plastic trim restorers for the money?

More and more cars are being built with plastic trim in the high impact areas such as fender arches, rocker panels, bottoms of bumpers, tops of pickup bed rails, etc&#;

This plastic is great for taking abuse and being easy to replace without worrying about paint color matching. However&#;

The plastic used on car, truck, and motorcycle trim is highly susceptible to degradation from the sun, heat, and other elements which I discuss in my article Guide to Cleaning and Detailing Trim and Molding.

There is no doubt you&#;ve seen the faded and chalky grey plastic on many of the daily drivers around town. This doesn&#;t have to be your reality if you use a quality trim restorer. My favorite is Solution Finish but there are a couple to consider and many to disregard as I&#;ll discuss below.

Top 5 Plastic Trim Restorers:

Why Should You Buy a Plastic Trim Restorer for Your Car?

So why bother with a plastic restorer? Mainly because the &#;like new&#; look of restored plastic looks much cleaner than faded, cracked, ashy grey plastic.

When there are such simple solutions to this common problem there really isn&#;t a good reason not to restore your trim.

Outside of just looking better, and subsequently increasing the perceived value of your vehicle, good plastic restorers also condition the plastic which prevents brittleness and cracking later.

What Makes a Good Plastic Trim Restorer?

A quality trim restorer will do more than just dye the plastic or sit on top, both of which are superficial, temporary solutions to your problem and will wash away in the slightest rain.

Instead, quality plastic restorers will be absorbed by the plastic and break down the oxidation that causes the lightened and ashy appearance. They will nourish the plastic and last a good amount of time, at least several months. They will also provide an even finish, like that of new plastic.

As you&#;ve probably guessed the cheap plastic restorers don&#;t accomplish this. They are usually just a dye, leave behind a sticky residue that attracts dust, leave a blotchy finish, and last a short amount of time.

In short, cheap plastic restorers aren&#;t worth your time or money.

What Will Plastic Restores NOT do?

The unfortunate reality is that plastic restorers are not permanent fixes. They will fade over time and will degrade fast in rainy environments. You can slow this process down by using a plastic sealant or protectant.

The best advice I can give on plastic trim restores is to apply it more often than it&#;s advertised to last. Pick something that&#;s easy to apply so you can make it part of you maintenance routine. Mike Phillips from Autogeek puts it best, &#;Find something you like and use it often.&#;

If you want as permanent of a solution as you can get then you&#;ll need to consider painting your plastic trim. This works great on non load bearing surfaces (trim you&#;ll step on or set things on) like wiper cowls, bumpers, wheel well arches, etc&#;

The process I use to paint trim is to first clean it really well, then wipe with a wax and grease remover, then spray an adhesion promoter, and finally paint with a flexible primer and satin paint meant for exterior use.

If you don&#;t have time for this then a plastic restorer followed up by a trim protectant as part of your routine details is your ticket.

Solution Finish &#; Black Plastic & Vinyl Restorer

Pros

  • Easy to apply
  • Last several months to over a year
  • A little goes a long way
  • Darkens to a nice satin finish

Cons

  • Can stain clothing
  • Has fumes before drying

Solution Finish is a great plastic restorer that restores dark grey and black plastics back to a dark, rich, deep finish without the greasy wet look of cheap restorers.

Unlike cheap dyes Solution Finish can be used on black as well as grey plastic. Just know that on grey plastic it will turn it a couple shades darker, not necessarily a bad thing.

Solution Finish doesn&#;t merely sit on top of the plastic, it is absorbed and breaks down the oxidation within the plastic. It also nourishes the plastic which gives it that rich, deep black color.

The best part is Solution Finish is easy to apply and requires very little. A tiny 1oz bottle could easily treat an entire Avalanche, the king of plastic trimmed vehicles. It also lasts a really long time compared to most other trim restorers, as much as a couple years if you apply a sealant afterward and park in the shade when possible.

The only downsides of Solution Finish are that it will stain clothing and skinwhen it&#;s wet and does produce fumes before drying. To be honest  though, this is going to be a common problem with most plastic restorers. These problems disappear once it&#;s dry.

  • ☑️ A protective coating of unparalleled durability.

Pros

  • Easy to apply
  • Last several months to over a year
  • A little goes a long way
  • Darkens to a nice satin finish
  • Contains UV inhibitors

Cons

I put permanent in quotes myself because no trim restorer is permanent, which I&#;ve hopefully beat into you by now. Gtechniq C4, however, does last much longer than usual.

The longevity comes with a price though. It&#;s likely you&#;ll need to use at least two coats to get a durable, even finish which means one 15ml bottle is likely only going to last you one vehicle if own something plastic clad like an Avalanche. You&#;ll need to purchase a couple bottles if you want to maintain the coating throughout the year to keep it looking perfect.

If you&#;re a professional auto detailer this is the type of product you would want to use to prevent your customers coming back in a week upset that their trim looks terrible after it rained. Manage expectations up front, though. It&#;s important your customers know that nothing short of painting will last forever.

That being said, with proper prep, this is definitely a proper trim restorer worth considering. Since it&#;s not a dye you can use it on any color of trim that you&#;re hoping to darken, this includes trim, weather stripping, plastic mirrors and cowls, air boxes, battery covers, and hoses.

Pros

  • Shines and darkens surfaces
  • Repels water, dirt and salt
  • Prevents fading and cracking
  • Safe for on plastic, vinyl, rubber and other outer surfaces

Cons

  • Doesn&#;t last as long as solution finish
  • Needs a long time to dry else it will streak in the rain

Another option for a trim restorer is Trinova Plastic and Trim Restorer. Much like Solution Finish it darkens the plastic rather dying it so it can be used grey as well as black trim.

This product has an oily consistency that makes it easy to spread out for an even finish. Since it&#;s a topical solution it also helps repel water and other contaminants.

It&#;s important to note that you need to prep the trim really well by washing away any dirt and oils. Since it&#;s a topical solution it will wash away and streak quickly if it&#;s applied to a dirty surface and isn&#;t left to dry fully before being exposed to rain.

Another important note is that it may take multiple applications to provide a durable, even finish.

Pros

  • Darkens surfaces to a matte finish
  • Readily available over the counter
  • Contains UV blockers to help protect plastic
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Doesn&#;t last more than a few weeks
  • Requires extra elbow grease to work into plastic for an even finish

I&#;m a big fan of Meguiar&#;s products. They&#;ve actually managed to create useful enthusiast grade products and make them available to everyone. It used to be if you walked into a big box store or automotive store your only options were Armorall or some no name snake oil product. Now you actually have useful options.

Meguiar&#;s Ultimate Black Restorer is no exception. While it won&#;t last as long as a product like Solution Finish it is readily available and provides acceptable results.

Provided you clean the trim really well, including degreasing it, and let the product dry fully,  Ultimate Black Restorer should last you a good few weeks, even in the rain. Followed up with a plastic sealant it can last even longer.

It may take a couple applications and some elbow grease to work the product into the trim to an even finish. To be fair, I&#;d rather use a product that took a little work to apply but lasted than one that was super easy and washes away the first time it rains.

As long as you manage your expectations (understand it&#;s not a permanent fix or even a long term one) then this product is worth consideration if your budget is tight.

Pros

Cons

  • Attracts dust
  • Doesn&#;t last as long as it claims

CarGuys Plastic Restore is a lot like Meguiar&#;s Ultimate Black Plastic Restorer except it leaves behind a sticky finish that attracts dust, costs more, and isn&#;t as readily available.

While it does work to darken plastics it just doesn&#;t last any longer than most other plastic restoration products.

On the bright side, they do have a guarantee so if you try it out and it&#;s not what you expected or doesn&#;t work for you (not all plastics react the same to all plastic restorers and there are hundreds of plastic formulations) you can contact them for a full refund.

In Summary

If you&#;re willing to make applying a plastic restorer part of your detailing routine then you&#;ll be satisfied with almost anything on this list. How long you desire between re-applications will determine which one you pick.

Personally, I don&#;t like having to do a full on detail every weekend when I wash my cars so I would opt for Solution Finish for it&#;s bang for the buck.

To be completely transparent, however, when dealing with faded plastic trim on non load bearing and non high impact surfaces I usually opt to just paint it and be done with it.

That said, painting is not for everyone and if you&#;re a detailer then painting your customer&#;s car is obviously not an option. For that Solution Finish and Gtechniq C4 are your only real choices provided you manage expectations from the start.

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: How long does it last?

Answer: Should last months!! -- We are so confident in everything we sell that every product is backed by our Zero Risk Policy. Use the product once, or use the entire bottle. If you become unsatisfied for any reason at all, simply let us know and we will take care of you! Thanks for the question!
  • Question: Will this work on our original dodge charger pillars. It will save a lil money if it will restore the black in them

Answer: I used it on the plastic edging and grill on my Audi TT (was white and powdery from age/sun exposure) and it went basically back to looking new. If you are using it on a big surface (ie not just edges), I'd recommend being very generous in your application and maybe get 2 bottles. Also, wash and dry the surface before you apply the stuff. If the pillars are plastic/vinyl and not polished and have that white powdery look from age, it will probably work. It doesn't work like paint though, so if you have peeling paint or something, this won't bring back that color. It's more for aged plastic/vinyl parts.
  • Question: How does this compare to others? specifically chemical guys vrp?

Answer: If u are looking to restore black trim there is nothing better than solution finish as a dressing or semi permanent restoration, this is fine For just enhancement, vrp is fin
  • Question: Does this have a fragrance smell?

Answer: I am very impressed with how well this product worked to darken graying plastic. It don't think it has any kind of sm
  • Question: Does this product work on steering wheel and dashboard

Answer: My steering wheel is leather- if yours is too, I wouldn’t. Use leather cleaner and conditioner. Dashboard yes, if it is plastic. I have a part of dashboard that is very textured, I don’t use it there. Only on smooth parts, and it has lasted a couple of months on interior
  • Question: I am trying to remove stubborn stains from a vinyl purse. The staining was caused by rubbing against a pair of jeans. Do you think this would work?

Answer: Nope but I feel confident that mothers back to black will!!
  • Question: I used this product on my 04 Wrangler’s original fenders and there were light and dark streaks. Any recommendations? Do I need to apply more?

Answer: I would apply more. If I remember correctly the 04 has the smaller, smoother fenders??? 07 and up are more textured. May just need a little more to get them even. Buff them really good after it’s sat on them for about 15 mins in the sun.
  • Question: Would this work to restore a plastic fisher price dollhouse? i cleaned it, but the plastic is dull in spots. would this bring back the faded parts?

Answer: Yes, our CarGuys Plastic Restorer should work excellent to bring it back to its original state. This is safe for all types of plastic, rubber and vinyl! Hope this helped, thanks for the question!
  • Question: Can this be used for color faded tires??

Answer: Yes this will work, just make sure to thoroughly clean and dry them before using the Plastic Restorer. Thanks for the question!
  • Question: Could this be used on weather tech Floor liners?

Answer: I would think so. It's for plastic, rubber or vinyl. Andit's NOT greasy and oily like some of the other restoring products. I used the oily, popular brand name product on my floor mats once and what a slippery nightmare that was. I think this would do much better.

The Best Plastic Restorers: Revitalize Your Car’s Trim

Written By Car Bibles Staff

Published May. 21,

While we can appreciate the economy and practicality of having plastic trim on our vehicles, the frustrating fact is that over time, it tends to get damaged and looks tired and worn out, detracting from the like-new appearance of your ride. Plastic trim and molding is lightweight and durable, but exposure to harsh elements like sun, snow, rocks, salt spray, tar, etc. cause it to begin to break down faster, even going so far as to lower your car’s resale value.

All hail the new generation of top-quality plastic restorers. For a small monetary investment, you can quickly and thoroughly revitalize the plastic trim and accents on your car, bringing back that showroom appearance that we all try so hard to maintain. With so many choices available to you on the market today, Car Bibles has decided to do some leg work for you and we’ve compiled a handy buying guide and a comprehensive list of the best performing and most reliable plastic restorers. No need to waste your time and money on substandard products that don’t deliver great results.

Things to Consider When Buying a Plastic Restorer

Selecting the right restorer for you will depend on a few key factors, which we discuss below:

Silicones

The highest quality, longest lasting, plastic restorers tend to be silicone-free. Silicone-based restorers act more like a dye than an actual restoration product and tend to produce a glossier finish than their silicone-free counterparts. This is great if you really just need to touch up your plastic components, but for a longer-lasting and less superficial solution, it’s a good idea to turn to a silicone-free formula, like those on the list above.

Areas of Use

Not all plastic restorers are equally versatile when it comes to surfaces, and you should always check the manufacturer’s description when deciding if a product is right for the applications you have in mind. For instance, some formulas are suitable for both interior and exterior use, but not all of them. Equally, some products can be used on your tires, rubber seals, and even leather seats, whereas others have been formulated specifically for rigid plastics. Be sure to work out exactly where you plan to use the restorer before making your final purchasing decision, to avoid potentially damaging components of your car.

Ease of Application

Working out how easy a product is to apply before buying it is always a good idea. Look out for plastic restorers that come with their own application solutions &#; such as a sponge or cloth &#; since this suggests the manufacturers have carefully thought through the process. If in doubt, look for customer reviews, since these very often mention how easy or challenging it is to actually use the product.

Finish

The type of finish you want will also affect which plastic restorer you end up choosing. Some are designed to leave a wet-look glossy finish, while others result in a more matte appearance. It’s usually best to choose a finish that best matches how your plastic surfaces originally looked, so if it fades faster in one area the result is less conspicuous. It’s also a good idea to look out for a dry-to-the-touch finish, that will prevent debris from sticking to your car, or finish rubbing off on your skin or clothes.

Level of Protection

Another important factor to bear in mind when choosing your plastic restorer is the level of protection it will offer. Look out for a restorer that will protect against UV rays first of all, since the sun tends to be the biggest threat to plastic car components. The next most important type of protection is probably water resistance, closely followed by resistance to dust and dirt.

Why You Should Use a Trim Restorer

Making use of a plastic trim restorer has a whole host of benefits &#; below we outline a few:

  • A good plastic restorer will replenish the dark black color to plastic trims
  • Many formulas are versatile enough to be used on a huge variety of components, including leather seats, tires, rubber window seals, plastic door handles, and plastic bumpers
  • Most plastic restorers are environmentally friendly, so no need to worry if you spill a little
  • Plastic restorers won’t damage your car’s paintwork if they spill onto it
  • Plastic restorers often achieve long-lasting results
  • These formulas are easy and convenient to apply
  • Keeping your trim in good condition is a great way to improve the overall appearance of your vehicle
  • A high quality plastic restorer will also protect your car’s plastic components against future damage
  • The protective layer left behind by most plastic restorers filter out harmful UV rays, and shield against dirt and water

How to Keep Plastic Trim Black?

Resorting to a professionally made plastic restorer is a great way to keep your plastic trims a dark black, or restoring them to their original color. However, there are also a few DIY tricks you might consider trying to restore plastic components to their original glory:

Rub in Some Oil

For light damage and scuffs, one simple homemade solution is to rub a little boiled linseed oil onto your plastic surface before allowing to dry. The oil simply provides a protective coating and shine.

Consider a Heat Gun

This can be a risky strategy, but some auto DIY enthusiasts have great success using the heat gun method. Using the heat gun, gently apply heat to the plastic surface to bring the oils within to the surface. Be sure to try an inconspicuous spot first, as this method won’t work % of the time. Also, try to heat the surface evenly, not overheating one spot to ensure it doesn’t burn. Keep health and safety in mind when using a heat gun too, donning some heat-proof gloves and goggles.

Paint the Trim

If you have some time on your hands, and a little DIY skill, another option is to simply remove plastic components from your vehicle and give them a coat of paint. This method allows you to choose the color you want &#; just be sure to purchase a paint designed for plastic surfaces. Also, remember to give the components to be painted a really thorough clean before painting them. This will prevent an uneven finish and give the paint the best chance of sticking.

Best Plastic Restorer FAQ:

Q: What is a Plastic Restorer?

A plastic restorer is a chemical-based solution that is specifically formulated to restore and protect exterior trim on your vehicle. Some may be approved for use on other surfaces, such as rubber and vinyl as well. Some plastic restorers are also suitable for use on various interior components of your car. Most will leave behind a protective coating on your trim to help prevent further oxidation and UV damage.

Q: Will trim restorers strip the wax coating off my car?

In most cases, yes, a trim restorer has a chemical makeup that will remove wax coatings from your trim, but by the time you resort to using a plastic restorer, there’s probably not much wax left on your trim anyhow. In its place, the restorer will leave behind its own layer of protection, so not to worry. As far as your car’s paint job is concerned, if you get some restorer on the paint, it shouldn’t be too damaging unless you really rub it in. Just wash it or wipe it away with a damp cloth.

Q: Can I use trim restorers on vinyl?

Most plastic and trim restoration products are safe and recommended for vinyl, but double-check prior to purchase. Unless it specifically says it’s safe for vinyl on the product packaging, we wouldn’t risk it.

Q: How long does it last once applied?

How long the restorer will last once applied greatly depends on the chemical makeup of the product. Some last a few weeks, while others last anywhere from car washes, and some even last for years. Check labels and user reviews to get an idea of longevity with any restorer you’re considering purchasing. The products on this list need to be reapplied between a few weeks to a few months, but if your car is regularly subject to harsh sunlight or dusty tracks, you’ll likely need to apply the treatment more often. It’s a good idea to make a note in your calendar when you first apply the coating, so you can see exactly how long the effects last for your vehicle and driving conditions. With this information, it’s easy to incorporate the restorer into your regular car cleaning routine. car guys restorer

HOW TO RESTORE FADED TRIM WITH CAR GUYS PLASTIC RESTORER

Tips

  • After using a trim restorer, make the trim sparkle and hide scratches with some of the best polishes, sealants, and waxes. They will help bounce off UV rays and prevent scratches to keep your trim looking new for longer periods of time.
  • If the trim restoration product fails, try using a UV-protected dye to prevent future fading from occurring. Select a black permanent dye for longer lasting color, and use masking tape to seal other parts of your car from the dye.
  • Besides car detailing, you can restore the faded black plastic by using a heat gun to bring out the oils that enhance the color. You can also use oily peanut butter to restore black plastic or paint over the defective plastic.

FAQs

Q. Will the trim restorer remove the wax coating off my car?

A: It depends on how you apply the restorer. Trim restorers work by stripping off whatever is coating the exterior trim surface and replacing it with a protective layer that prevents fading, water, and dust. If you use an applicator pad to apply the chemical on the trim, it will remove the wax. However, it won’t remove the wax coat if it accidentally spills on parts of your car that are wax-coated as long as you don’t rub it in.

Q. How long do trim restorers last once they’re applied?

A: Exterior trim restorers are typically reapplied after a few weeks or months depending on the quality of the restorer. It also depends on the level of damage of your exterior trim, how much of the product you use, and your driving conditions. For example, if your car is old and you drive on rugged terrain under harsh weather conditions, then the trim restorer may only last for a week. It will last longer if you don’t frequently expose your car to heavy rain and harsh sunlight.

Q. How do I keep my trim from fading?

A: Assuming that you have a new car or have just restored your exterior trim’s color, you can prevent the trim from fading by keeping your vehicle parked away from direct sunlight. Hose down your vehicle to remove dust, and if you have to, give it a hard wash to remove tough stains using a mild detergent and a soft scrubber.

Q. What parts of my vehicle make up the trim?

A: The car trim is any black material on your car that may fade when exposed to harsh environmental conditions. This includes the door handles, roof rack, window rubber gaskets, mud flaps, fender flares, bumper, tires, side mirror cover, and lower rocker panel trim pieces. It also includes the plastic and rubber parts in your vehicle’s interior.
