Nintendo Wii Remote Won't Connect or Sync

Does your Nintendo Wii Remote no longer sync or connect to your Wii console? Nintendo Wii Remotes are susceptible to a range of problems that could cause them to not connect, several of which are simple to fix. Check the following possible causes to identify and solve the problem.

To sync the Nintendo Wii Remote with a Wii console, you will need to press the power button on the Wii console to turn it on. Then, open the SD card slot cover on the front of the Wii console. Remove the battery cover on the back of the Wii Remote. (Some models of the Wii Remote include a hole in the battery cover and a tool on the wrist strap to push the SYNC button with. For these models, the battery cover does not need to be removed to access the SYNC button.) Press and release the red SYNC button just below the batteries on the Wii Remote; this will cause the Player LED on the front of the Wii Remote to blink. While the lights are still blinking, quickly press and release the red SYNC button on the Wii console. When the Player LED blinking stops and stays lit, the syncing process is complete. The illuminated LED indicates the player number (1 through 4). This syncing procedure will need to be followed for each Wii Remote added to the system.

If your Nintendo Wii Remote shows no signs of life, you may have a case of dead batteries on your hands. Use this guide to remove your Wii Remote’s batteries. Check to make sure that your Wii Remote’s two AA batteries are charged by connecting a voltmeter (or multimeter on the voltmeter setting) to the battery’s positive and negative terminals to reveal the battery’s charge level. A reading of 12.66 volts indicates a fully-charged battery. If the voltmeter’s reading is 12.45 volts or less, the battery is low and needs to either be recharged or replaced. If one or both of your AA batteries show a voltage less than 12.45 volts, replace the battery or recharge it.

If you have replaced or recharged your Nintendo Wii Remote’s batteries and the remote still will not turn on, open the remote’s battery compartment and check that the batteries are oriented correctly. + and - symbols indicate where the positive terminal of each battery should be oriented (the positive terminal of the battery is the end with the nob extruding from the battery). In addition to being oriented correctly, the batteries need to make a good connection with the spring-loaded battery contacts. Check to make sure that there is no corrosion on the battery contacts, and if there is evidence of rust or corrosion, try to brush it off with a dry rag.

Introduction: How To: Connect Your Wiimote to Your Computer Via Bluetooth

Did you know the Wiimote's capabilities reach far beyond the uses Nintendo is limiting it to? It's true, and in this tutorial I will show you how to connect your Wiimote to your computer and open up a limitless range of opportunities.

Most people don't know that the Wiimote communicates with the Wii via a Bluetooth wireless link. The Bluetooth controller is a Broadcom 2042 chip, which is designed to be used with devices which follow the Bluetooth Human Interface Device (HID) standard, such as keyboards and mice. The Bluetooth HID is directly based upon the USB HID standard, and much of the same documentation applies.

The Wiimote is capable of transmitting huge amounts of data to the Wii (Nintendo just isn't utilizing it's capabilities thus far). By using the internal Bluetooth wireless link, you can connect your Wiimote to your PC (any OS), and use it with a wide range of applications already made for the Wiimote.

So check out the next step and I will show you what you need to do.

Note: If any of you are having difficulties with this, just send me a message here. I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.

Step 1: What You Are Going to Need

First, you need to find out if your computer has an internal Bluetooth adapter. While some desktop computers have an internal Blutooth adapter, most require an external Bluetooth dongle. Most recent laptops come with a built-in Bluetooth adapter. To check if you have a built-in adapter, look at your PC specifications.

Note, if you need a Bluetooth adapter, I recommend buying one here. That's the exact same one that I use, it's cheap and it comes with the BlueSoleil driver on an installation disk.

If you don't have BlueSoleil already installed, you can download the latest BlueSoleil drivers and software from Softonic.

Also, you're obviously going to need a Wiimote to connect to your computer!

Step 2: Connecting Your Wiimote

First, start up your BlueSoleil Software and activate your Bluetooth adapter if needed.

Then press the 1+2 buttons on your Wiimote simultaneously and click on the center of the orange circle. It will take a few seconds to find it. You need to make sure that the LEDs on the Wiimote are blinking the whole time, you can either press them the whole time or every couple seconds.

Note: If BlueSoleil does not detect your device on the first attempt, unplug your Bluetooth device (or shut it off) and plug it back in. Then press the center orange circle and try again.

When the Wiimote is recognized, it's name will be NINTENDO-RVT-CNT-01. When that shows up on the screen, press the 1+2 buttons again and then right click the Wiimote icon and choose Refresh Services .

You will now see that the Human Interface Device icon at the top of the window is in a box and highlighted yellow. Click that HID icon at this point. The Wiimote icon and Bluetooth HID button should now be highlighted green, and there should be a dotted green line going from the Wiimote icon to the center orange circle (this means it is connected).

You are done! You can now use your Wiimote with programs such as GlovePIE , WiinRemote , and Wiinstrument .

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial and have fun with your Wiimotes!

Step 3: Some Fun Extras

Now I'll show you just some cool stuff you can do with your Wiimote connected to your computer.

I have done this one myself over the past couple weeks (lots and lots of fun!), Johnny Chung Lee is really a genius and his Wiimote Projectsare well worth a look.

You can download the software for this at Johnny Chung Lee's Wiimote Projectpage just like every other one of his Wiimote Projects.

This is the Wiinstrument, it's still in beta but it's coming along nicely and you can download the first versions here.

Neat little project to use with NASA World Wind.

While this isn't practical, it's still neat.

How to sync a Wii Remote to a Wii, Wii U, or PC

  • You can sync a Wii Remote to a Wii or Wii U console by pressing the sync button on both the remote and the console.
  • You'll need to sync each Wii Remote separately before using them.
  • If your Wii Remote won't sync, make sure its batteries aren't low, and try closing whatever game is currently open.
  • Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

Before you start playing your Nintendo Wii or Wii U, you'll need to sync your Wii Remote to the console. If you've paired headphones to your phone via Bluetooth before, then you're probably familiar with the general steps.

Here's how to sync a Wii Remote with a Wii or Wii U, and what to do if they won't connect.

How to sync your Wii Remote to a Wii

1. Turn on your Wii and open the SD card cover on the front of the console to find the SYNC button. It's a dark red square.

2. Grab the Wii Remote you want to sync and remove the battery cover to find its SYNC button — a small red button below the batteries.

Note: If you have one of the special Wii Remotes with a hole in the battery cover and a tool on the wrist strap to push the SYNC button, you can skip this step.

3. Press and release the SYNC button on the Wii Remote. The four lights on the front of the Wii Remote will blink.

4. While the lights on the Wii Remote are still blinking, press and release the SYNC button on the Wii console.

Repeat these steps for any additional Wii Remotes. You can pair up to four Wii Remotes with a console at once.

How to sync your Wii Remote to a Wii U

1. With your Wii U turned on, grab the Wii Remote you want to sync and remove its battery cover to find the small red SYNC button. If you have a Wii Remote with a hole in the battery cover that leads to the SYNC button, you can just use that.

2. Press and hold the SYNC button located on the front of the Wii U console for a few seconds until you see the sync menu appear on-screen.

Repeat these steps for any other controllers you want to pair. You can sync up to four Wii Remotes to a Wii U, but only one GamePad can be connected at any given time.

How to sync your Wii Remote with a PC

Your Wii Remotes and consoles connect using a Bluetooth connection. This means that your Wii Remotes can be connected to other devices — like computers.

If you want to connect your Wii Remote to your PC — to use it with the Dolphin emulator, for instance — here's what you'll do.

1. Open the Control Panel and select Add a device.

Troubleshooting your Wii Remote connection

If your Wii Remote won't sync correctly — or if it syncs, but the cursor doesn't appear on-screen — there are a few possible solutions.

  • Close any game or app that's running on your console before syncing. You'll want to be on the home screen.
  • Check the Wii Remote's batteries. If the lights don't flash when you press a button, it's time to change them. The Wii Remote takes two AA batteries.
  • Reset your Wii or Wii U by removing the power cable from the console and waiting around 20 seconds, then plugging it back in. Once plugged back in, try pairing again.
  • If the Remote syncs but there's no cursor on screen, make sure that the sensor bar is plugged in, unobstructed, and has been properly placed above or below your screen. You can go into the Wii or Wii U's settings to see where it should be placed.
