About five years ago I lived downtown in a major city in the US. I've always been a night person, so I would often find myself bored after my roommate, who was decidedly not a night person, went to sleep. To pass the time, I used to go for long walks and spend the time thinking.

I spent four years like that, walking alone at night, and never once had a reason to feel afraid. I always used to joke with my roommate that even the drug dealers in the city were polite. But all of that changed in just a few minutes of one evening.

It was a Wednesday, somewhere between one and two in the morning, and I was walking near a police-patrolled park quite a ways from my apartment. It was a quiet night, even for a weeknight, with very little traffic and almost no one on foot. The park, as it was most nights, was completely empty.

I turned down a short side-street in order to loop back to my apartment when I first noticed him. At the far end of the street, on my side, was the silhouette of a man, dancing. It was a strange dance, similar to a waltz, but he finished each "box" with an odd forward stride. I guess you could say he was dance-walking, headed straight for me.

Deciding he was probably drunk, I stepped as close as I could to the road to give him the majority of the sidewalk to pass me by. The closer he got, the more I realized how gracefully he was moving. He was very tall and lanky, and wearing an old suit. He danced closer still, until I could make out his face. His eyes were open wide and wild, head tilted back slightly, looking off at the sky. His mouth was formed in a painfully wide cartoon of a smile. Between the eyes and the smile, I decided to cross the street before he danced any closer.

I took my eyes off of him to cross the empty street. As I reached the other side, I glanced back and then stopped dead in my tracks. He had stopped dancing and was standing with one foot in the street, perfectly parallel to me. He was facing me but still looking skyward, smile still wide on his lips.

I was completely and utterly unnerved by this. I started walking again, but kept my eyes on the man. He didn't move. Once I had put about half a block between us, I turned away from him for a moment to watch the sidewalk in front of me. The street and sidewalk ahead of me were completely empty. Still unnerved, I looked back to where he had been standing to find him gone. For the briefest of moments I felt relieved, until I noticed him. He had crossed the street, and was now slightly crouched down. I couldn't tell for sure due to the distance and the shadows, but I was certain he was facing me. I had looked away from him for no more than ten seconds, so it was clear that he had moved fast.

I was so shocked that I stood there for some time, staring at him. And then he started moving toward me again. He took giant, exaggerated tip-toed steps, as if he were a cartoon character sneaking up on someone. Except he was moving very, very quickly.

I'd like to say at this point I ran away or pulled out my pepper spray or my cellphone or anything at all, but I didn't. I just stood there, completely frozen as the smiling man crept toward me.

And then he stopped again, about a car length away from me. Still smiling his smile, still looking to the sky.

When I finally found my voice, I blurted out the first thing that came to mind. What I meant to ask was, "What do you want?!" in an angry, commanding tone. What came out was a whimper: "Whaaat…?"

Regardless of whether or not humans can smell fear, they can certainly hear it. I heard it in my own voice, and that only made me more afraid. But he didn't react to it at all. He just stood there, smiling.

And then, after what felt like forever, he turned around, very slowly, and started dance-walking away. Just like that. Not wanting to turn my back to him again, I just watched him go, until he was far enough away to almost be out of sight. And then I realized something. He wasn't moving away anymore, nor was he dancing. I watched in horror as the distant shape of him grew larger and larger. He was coming back my way. And this time he was running.

I ran too.

I ran until I was off of the side-road and back onto a better lit road with sparse traffic. Looking behind me then, he was nowhere to be found. The rest of the way home, I kept glancing over my shoulder, always expecting to see his stupid smile, but he was never there.

I lived in that city for six months after that night, and I never went out for another walk. There was something about his face that always haunted me. He didn't look drunk, he didn't look high. He looked completely and utterly insane. And that's a very, very scary thing to see.

Indrid Cold, also known as the Smiling Man, is a human-like cryptid, which originates as a modern Urban Legend on the internet. Many have speculated that Indrid Cold might be related with the infamous Mothman.

Appearance

Indrid Cold is believed to be a very tall man with an old suit. His eyes are very small, and wide open, with a cartoonishly wide and long eerie smile on his face. Some suggest that the man is missing some face pieces, such as ears and the nose, while others have described him as almost looking completely normal physically. People have described his suit to be either blue or green colored. It's believed that Indrid Cold could be an alien or a ghost. Indrid Cold can be compared to the Joker and SCP due to his titular creepy grin, his insanity and his hobby of stalking people.

Personality and Origins

The personality of Indrid Cold or the Smiling Man differs between sightings. Indrid Cold’s experiences with the salesman and John Keel paint him as a non-malevolent alien who means no harm to anyone and even presumably helps them be safe by warning them of future disasters. However, his experience with the two boys and the family sighting make him out to be a creepy and possibly paranormal stalker, but nothing much more, not seeming to do any other sort of harm to people.

The Creepypasta version introduced in the Reddit post introduce him as a very creepy and clearly insane person who behaves very erratically, dancing around randomly and staring at the sky. This version is a full-on stalker, pursuing the author for no apparent reason. Due to the personality contrast between this man and Indrid Cold, and the fact that he does not seem to be alien or ghostly in origin, it’s very likely that this man is a seperate entity from Indrid Cold, only sharing the titular creepy grin.

History

October,

The first sighting of the man is believed to be on 16 October When two young boys were at the Elizabeth's New Jersey, spending time together until they noticed a very tall human-like being behind the fence. Both of the boys were brave and went towards the man, trying to step closer to see the man. However, both of them started to feel fear, and realized the man had a creepy smile on his face. The man starts to look at the boys, peering at them though the fence. The boys started running away from the man until they got away. After the encounter, boys started remembering more of the the man's appearance, describing his face as having small beady eyes and no other features other than his titular grin.

November,

Interestingly enough, after two weeks another man had a similar experience. On 1 November , A salesman which was driving in the night to his home, he noticed weird lightning in front of him. In front of him, the salesman saw a weird-lamp looking spacecraft vehicle. The door opened up, as the man got out from the spacecraft, going towards the salesman. The man spoke to the salesman telepathically, introducing his name as "Indrid Cold". After the two had a conversation, where the man said he was an alien from a distant planet who meant no harm to the salesman, Indrid Cold said that he will visit the salesman again, as Indrid Cold entered his spacecraft and disappeared.

The salesman ended up contacting the police, trying to tell them the story, convince them that it's real. The police didn't believe the story, while the news-outlets became interested in the story. After the salesman told his story, other people went forward and told their experiences with Indrid Cold as well. The salesman also claimed that Indrid Cold brought him to his planet for six months in a far-away galaxy.

Family Sighting

A family also reported that they had paranormal experiences, which indicates towards Indrid Cold. The daughter of the family woke up one night, seeing a big tall man, grinning at her creepily. The man walked around her bed, and stood in front of her. As the daughter screamed in fear, and went under her covers to hide from the man, he just disappeared.

Investigation

Late American investigator John Keel, investigated the Mothman. During his investigations, he received phone-calls from Indrid Cold. The final conversation they had consisted of Indrid Cold telling John Keel to run away because a terrible disaster will happen. As John Keel escaped, the Silver-Bridge collapsed, with 43 people killed from the event.

The Reddit Post

In , a Reddit post was created by "Blue_tidal", titled "The Smiling Man", which ultimately became the cryptid's nickname. In the story, the author explains how he lived in a American city, where he would of go for long walks in the middle of the night, thinking about various topics all alone. For four years, the author has been going outside in the night, without any problems until one day.

The day was Wednesday, and the author went for another walk. As he was walking, he noticed the man making a strange dance in front of him. The author believed he was just drunk and that there's no serious danger. Until the man started going towards the author, as the author starts feeling uncomfortable. The man was the whole time avoiding eye contact, and was looking up into the dark-sky, while the man's started to smile wide open, like a cartoon character would of.

Author decides to cross the street and move away from the man, realizing how dangerous the situation might become. The man decided to follow the author, and crossed the street with him. As the author realizes that the man is getting closer, and that the man's smile is becoming more sinister then before. Author describes becoming extremely uncomfortable by the situation, walking again straight, without looking at the man. Until the author decided to look behind of him again, just to see the man going towards the author again.

The author was just standing still in shock looking at the man going towards the author. As the man was going towards the author and was stopping the whole time. It's like the man was having his pauses in the action. While the author was just waiting, the man decided to turn around and walk away from the author. Until the man decided to run towards the author, possibly trying to capture the author. The author did run as well. In the end, the author managed to escape, and started having nightmares which he never had in his life, remembering the event. Later on, another user known as "CustomCreepyPasta" on Wikia, created an article on the Creepyasta wikia regarding the story.

The Reddit post ended up blowing up, and the story became extremely talked about on the internet, giving Indrid Cold/The Smiling Man its identity.

There are many stories that happen every now and then in this world. Only a very few of them are captured on camera, featured on news, or written by some writer in an attempt to keep the story from being lost forever.

The smiling man

Such is a story named The Smiling Man. It’s not based on a true story, it is a true story. Later confirmed in a Reddit thread, The Smiling Man is a creepy mysterious story that took place in Seattle. The writer used to spend the long, boring night by walking down the streets until he met this man he would probably never forget for the rest of his life. This unusual man made him stop going out to walk in the night anymore just because he was so scary, despite being a man who otherwise looked like an innocent charmer.

How I came to know about The Smiling Man is another story. I was surfing on YouTube on my phone and this short film called “2 AM” popped up on the homepage. Because I have interest in making short films, I played it. The four-minute video does some good job in audio and camera movement, somewhat scary, but is entirely pointless to the end. But when I saw a comment that read “The actual story is scarier,” I found interest in reading what the actual story was.

Thus I surfed the web and came to know about The Smiling Man – yet another unresolved mystery of the universe.

The short film, embedded below, is meant to watch after you read The Smiling Man. But like any other screen adaption, the short film does not have as much essence as the original story. So, I advise you to do the opposite and watch this short film first, and then read the story over to the link given below.

Afterwards, don’t forget to come back and leave your thoughts on this. Do you have something similar in your life that you think is worth writing? Even if it isn’t, I think you should write it anyway.

I wonder how many of such creepy incidents happen every other day in this big blue planet.

The story of the smiling man is quite an unsettling one. This modern urban legend surfaced on the web about two years ago &#x; the first sighting was posted on Reddit by a (presumably) young man who's name we don't know. This reportedly happened in , and is a basic recounting of this young man's experience.

In his account of the story, the young man states that at the time he was living in a major metropolitan city (it seems that it is now known that the city in question is Seattle). He describes himself as a night owl and says that he had gotten into the habit of frequently taking walks at night to pass the time and to clear his head. He had done this for close to four years and never had an issue, not even in the twilight hours &#x; this is despite the fact that he lived in a major city. The encounter happened on a quiet night, and the street that the young man was was walking on was basically devoid of cars and other people.

He had already been out walking for some time, so he decided it was about time to turn around and start heading home. It was as he was turning around when he first saw silhouette of a stranger who appeared to be dancing &#x; more specifically, he looked like he was waltzing. At the same time, he was slowly edging his way towards the younger man. Every three or four steps of the stranger's dance was punctuated with one step towards the storyteller.

The young man decided that the stranger was probably drunk, and he so he gave the drunk stranger a wide berth and moved to the very edge of the sidewalk to avoid any interaction. As the stranger's silhouette became more and more visible in the dim city streets, the young man realized that this odd stranger was actually moving very gracefully &#x; almost like a trained dancer &#x; and was unlikely to be inebriated. He noted that the stranger was unusually tall and lanky, and was wearing a faded suit.

As this tall stranger came closer still, he stepped under a streetlamp and the young man finally caught a proper glimpse of his face. His head was tilted backwards, his eyes were wide open, looking upwards at the sky, and he had a unnaturally large, cartoonish grin on his face.

The young man, clearly (and very understandably) unsettled by this odd stranger, decided to cross the street to avoid getting too close to this clearly deranged man. He crosses the street, and when he gets to the other side, he takes a glance back and finds the stranger gone. For a moment, the young man is relieved, but he spots the stranger again out of the corner of his eye, on the other side of the street, directly opposite him &#x; with the same expression, eyes wide open, head tilted upwards, ghoulish smile on his face.

The young man starts to panic &#x; he starts walking at a brisk pace, all the while keeping his eyes on the stranger, who doesn't move from the spot that he's standing. Our storyteller glances forward only momentarily to get his bearings, and when he looks behind him again, he sees that the smiling man is looking straight at him from a crouch &#x; the two of them are now on the same side of the street again.

The young man is shocked and how fast the smiling man seems to move &#x; he stands there in shock, and the smiling man starts to tiptoe, with large steps, like the ones cartoon characters do when they're trying to sneak around &#x; except in this case, the stranger is moving fast.

For whatever reason, the storyteller doesn't just GTFO&#x; he stands there, and tries to scare the smiling man off by swearing at him, but apparently he was so tense that barely any sound escaped his throat. The smiling man at this point is a half a block away from the storyteller, still smiling and half gazing at the sky with his head tilted backwards. At this point, he slowly turned around, and started dancing away, moving in the same way as he was before. The young man watched him intently as he faded in the distance. Just as his pulse was finally starting to slow down, he sees the distant silhouette getting larger and larger &#x; the smiling man is not dancing anymore &#x; he is running, straight towards the storyteller.

At this point, the young man basically bolts &#x; he runs as fast as he can to an area where there were more people and some car traffic. He gets home safely. But he says he longer enjoys taking long walks at night.

This account of the smiling man is in fact not the only one, although it was the first. In fact, there is a whole subreddit dedicated to the sightings of this strange, unsettling figure (). As of yet, it's unclear it's not totally clear who or what The Smiling Man is &#x; he could just be a guy hopped up on some drugs, or an insane person.

Encyclopaedia Of The Impossible: The Smiling Man

Previously: Roko’s Basilisk.

Type: PE (Preternatural Entity).

Period/location of origin: (approximate), Seattle, Washington, United States.

Appearance: Subject, known as the &#;Smiling Man,&#; appears to be a tall, middle-aged, male humanoid with dark hair and no facial hair, between 6’2” and 6’5” and often described by targets as “lanky.” From a distance, subject appears to be a man; however, it is not known whether this classification is correct. Subject’s facial expression, which appears to be frozen in place, is exaggerated to the point of unnaturalness, with eyes open wide and mouth drawn into an even wider smile.

Subject moves in a curious, dance-like fashion similar to the box step performed in a waltz. Subject finishes each box with a large step forward, propelling subject in the direction in which it wishes to travel. Subject moves quickly and gracefully — more quickly than one might expect.

Subject typically wears a dark suit. It is old and very much out of style with regards to the current fashion, although in good condition.

It is not known what subject has to smile about, or why he smiles so broadly.

Modus operandi: Subject targets people walking alone late at night, typically between one and two o’clock in the morning and especially along poorly lit and sparsely traveled side streets. Subject will appear on the side of the street on which target is walking, moving towards target in the previously described waltz-like style. Subject may periodically stop and face target without moving, although target will rarely, if ever, directly witness the moment subject starts or stops. Should target cross to the other side of the street, subject will wait until target isn’t looking and then follow. Subject does not ever make eye contact with targets.

Subject may choose to back off at any given moment, turning around and waltz-stepping away from target. However, this choice may be seen as a warning sign: After subject has moved nearly out of sight, it may turn back and beginning running towards target at a great speed. What might happen should subject reach target during this stage is unknown — but it is not expected to be good.

Targets may encounter subject in dreams for some time following an encounter; according to some targets, these dreams frequently feature subject and target dancing together, each bearing the same unnatural smile. Whether these dreams are natural or supernatural in nature remains to be seen.

Containment: Unknown. Subject currently remains loose in the wild.

Additional notes: First known report of subject appeared on the subreddit r/LetsNotMeet on April 6, , in which Redditor blue_tidal related an incident they claimed had occurred in Seattle, Washington roughly five years prior; then, on April 23, blue-tidal cross-posted their story to r/NoSleep. In the years since this initial account was reported, subject has also been seen in other locations in the United States, such as Iowa, as well as countries such as Belgium and Canada. Precisely how subject travels between these locations remains unknown.

Recommendation: Should subject be spotted, it is recommended that targets move immediately to a well-lit, well-populated area. Do not speak. Do not make any noise. If possible, take shelter in a secure location until daylight.

Or, simply do not venture out alone at night. Ever.
