Red Dead Redemption 2 features over 50 different weapons divided into different categories. Each category has its own specific uses which make them better for certain tasks over the others. The bow, for example, is the weapon to use while hunting, but it's far from being the best choice when confronting enemies all guns blazing.
We have already covered which weapons are the best, but one wouldn't be a true outlaw if he or she didn't try to find all the weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Here, we will list how to obtain each and every one of them and get a good boost on the total completion percentage.
The bow is one of the weapons that cannot be missed in the game. It is obtained during "The Aftermath of Genesis" mission, where Arthur goes hunting together with Charles. While there's only one bow type, the different arrow types that can be obtained - Regular, Improved, Small Game, Poison, Fire and Dynamite arrows - alter the weapon's performance.
The Antler Knife feels like the regular Hunting Knife, making the differences between the two weapons merely aesthetic. The weapon can be found West of Hanging Dog Ranch, above Little Creek River. Upon reaching the ranch, players need to go North-West from the big barn, where they will find a bear carcass. Searching the carcass will reveal the knife.
Broken Pirate Sword
The Broken Pirate Sword doesn't differ much from the machete regarding stats, but it's definitely a cool looking weapon. It can be found in a wrecked boat located near the islands south of Saint Denis' southern bridge.
Civil War Knife
The Civil War Knife is yet another aesthetic variant of the regular Hunting Knife. The weapon is located in the basement of Fort Brennand, South-West of Van Horn. The weapon is on a crate in the basement.
If the other melee weapons feel too tame, the Cleaver is the best one to make a crazy impression on enemies. The weapon can be bought from fences from Chapter 5 onward after completing the "Dear Uncle Tacitus" mission.
Double Bit Hatchet
The Double Bit Hatchet doesn't differ much from the regular hatchet, so use what you like best. The weapon can be found North-West of Wallace Station, inside a tree stump.
The Hatchet is an OK melee weapon that deals decent damage. It can be purchased from fences from Chapter 5 onward after completing the "Dear Uncle Tacitus" mission.
Like the Double Bit Hatchet, the differences with the regular Hatchet are only aesthetic. The weapon can be found in a stump located on the southern shore of Moonstone Pond. The pond is found north of Emerald Ranch.
Another aesthetic variant of the regular Hatchet, the Hunter Hatchet can be found in a stump south of Window Rock, located to the west of Fort Wallace.
The Hunting Knife is part of Arthur's inventory at the beginning of the game and therefore cannot be missed! While the weapon is mostly used to skin dead animals, it can be used to perform stealth kills.
The Jawbone Knife is a variant of the Hunting Knife and has no stats difference with it. It's obtained by completing the "A Test of Faith" side mission.
The Machete is a solid melee weapon featuring slightly better range and damage than knives. It can be purchased by fences from Chapter 5 onward, after completing the "Dear Uncle Tartarus" mission.
Rusted Double Bit Hatchet
The Rusted Double Bit Hatchet is yet another aesthetic variant of the regular Hatcher, featuring no stats difference with it. The weapon is found in a stump located in Annesburg.
Rusted Hunter Hatchet
The Rusted Hunter Hatchet is similar to the regular Hatchet, featuring only decorative differences. The weapon is found in a stump close to a shack located between O’Creagh’s Run and Elysian Pool.
The Stone Hatchet is a special weapon that cannot be obtained in Red Dead Redemption 2 directly. It can only be obtained by completing five special Bounty Hunt missions in Grand Theft Auto Online
Yet another variant of the regular Hatchet, the Viking Hatchet is found in a tomb northeast of Beaver Hollow. It may not be all that different from the Hatchet, but bringing the wrath of the Norsemen down on the enemies is sure to bring a different type of satisfaction.
The Wide-Blade Knife isn't different from the Hunting Knife, only featuring some aesthetic differences. It's found inside Beryl's Dream Mine, located to the west of Mount Shann.
The Algernon's Revolver is one of the unique weapons found in Red Dead Redemption 2 and, as such, it cannot be customized. The weapon is obtained automatically by completing the "Duchess and Other Animals" mission.
The Calloway's Revolver is another unique weapon and it cannot be customized in any way. It can be looted from Jim Calloway, the fifth and final gunslinger of "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman" side mission.
A staple of the Wild West, the Cattleman Revolver is a reliable, but not particularly powerful revolver. It's impossible to miss, as it's part of Arthur's arsenal since the beginning of the game. An additional Cattleman Revolver can be purchased from any gunsmith if you'd like to dual wield (just remember you'll need an upgraded holster too).
The Double-Action Revolver is a weapon featuring a better fire rate compared to other revolvers, thanks to the double-action. It can be purchased from all gunsmiths after completing the "A Strange Kindness" mission in Chapter 2. It can also be obtained in Chapter 3 during a robbery.
Flaco's Revolver is a unique weapon and it cannot be customized in any way. It can be obtained by looting Flaco Hernandez after killing him during "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman" side-mission.
Granger's Revolver is yet another unique weapon that cannot be customized. It's obtained by looting Emmet Granger's body after winning the duel against him during "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman" mission.
The Mauser Pistol is an excellent pistol, not for its damage, but for its high accuracy, fire rate and reload speed. It can be purchased from the Valentine and Saint Denis gunsmiths from Chapter 5 onward after completing the "That's Murfee County" mission.
The signature weapon of the member of the Van der Linde gang is found on Mount Hagen after the "American Venom" mission has been completed. Like other unique weapons, it cannot be customized.
The Midnight Pistol is the gunslinger's Billy Midnight's signature weapon, and it can be obtained during "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman" side mission. It cannot be customized.
Otis Miller's Revolver
The Otis Miller's Revolver is a unique weapon that cannot be customized. It can be found by taking part in the treasure hunt leading to Rattlesnake Hollow. We have a full guide on the treasure hunt.
The Schofield Revolver is a very solid revolver sporting good damage and the best firing rate for revolvers. It can be purchased by all gunsmiths starting from Chapter 2. It can also be obtained for free by robbing the doctor in Valentine.
The Semi-Automatic Pistol sports very high fire rate and accuracy. It can be purchased by the gunsmiths in Valentine and Saint Denis after completing the Chapter 4 mission "The Joys of Civilization".
The Volcanic Pistol is the highest damaging pistol of the game. It can be purchased from Chapter 2 onward by the gunsmith in Valentine.
The Carbine Repeater is a very solid weapon that deals good damage. Its other stats are quite good as well, making it a good choice in any gunfight. The weapon is obtained during the "Old Friends" mission. It's also available for purchase by any gunsmith.
The Lancaster Repeater is a considerably worse repeater than the Carbine Repeater, being inferior to it in all areas except fire rate. It can be purchased by any gunsmith from Chapter 2 onward after completing the "An American Pastoral Scene" mission.
The Litchfield Repeater is the most damaging repeater of the game, but also the less accurate. It's obtained after completing the "Goodbye, Dear Friend" mission in Chapter 6. The weapon also becomes purchasable by any gunsmith after the mission has been completed.
The Double-Barreled Shotgun is a solid shotgun sporting better fire-rate, range, and accuracy than other similar weapons. It can be purchased by gunsmiths after the Chapter 2 mission "Paying a Social Call" has been completed.
The Pump-Action shotgun is a reliable weapon to have during any short-range shootout, sporting good damage but low range. It can be purchased by any gunsmith after completing the "Pouring Forth Oil" mission in Chapter 2.
The Rare Shotgun resembles the Double-Barreled Shotgun, sporting similar stats. It's the unique weapon of the Hermit and, as such, it cannot be customized. To obtain it, players have to kill the Hermit, who's located in a cabin found northeast of Rhodes.
The Repeating Shotgun is a powerful shotgun also sporting fast reload speed and high fire rate. It can be purchased by all gunsmiths after completing the "Visiting Hours" mission in Chapter 6.
The Sawed-Off Shotgun is an extremely powerful shotgun that can be dual-wielded together with another revolver or pistol. It's obtained automatically during "The Aftermath of Genesis" mission. An additional one can be purchased by any gunsmith from Chapter 2 onward.

The Carcano Rifle is one of the best rifles of the game, sporting high damage, range, and accuracy. It becomes available for purchase by all gunsmiths after completing the "Goodbye, Dear Friend" mission in Chapter 6.
Rare Rolling Block Rifle
Another excellent choice for long range confrontations thanks to its excellent range, accuracy and damage, the Rare Rolling Block Rifle can be picked up at the end of the "Magicians for Sport" mission in Chapter 3. The weapon is by the sniper and it has to be picked up without leaving the area, as doing so will make it disappear forever.
Rolling Block Rifle
The Rolling Block Rifle and Rare Rolling Block Rifle are pretty similar weapons, so either is good for fighting enemies from a greater distance. It can be purchased by any gunsmith after completing the Chapter 2 mission "Pouring Forth Oil".
The Springfield Rifle is a standard rifle sporting good damage, range and accuracy but bad fire rate and reload speed. It can be purchased by all gunsmiths right from Chapter 2.
The Varmint Rifle is probably the worst rifle for fighting enemies, as its damage output is the lowest of all rifles. Low damage, however, makes it a good choice for hunting. It can be purchased by all gunsmiths from Chapter 2 onward.
A common throwable weapon, the Throwing Knife doesn't excel in any particular area, but it's useful for long-range stealth kills. It can be purchased by fences after completing the "Paying a Social Call" mission in Chapter 2.

The Poison Throwing Knife is an improvement over the regular Throwing Knife, as it deals more damage and poisons the enemy. The weapon is obtained through crafting, mixing a Throwing Knife with Oleander Sage.
The Tomahawk deals slightly better damage than the Throwing Knife, but it's used in pretty much the same type of situations. It can be purchased by fences after completing the "Americans at Rest" mission in Chapter 2.
An improved version of the regular Tomahawk, it sports better damage compared to the regular weapon. It can only be crafted at camp, requiring Eagle or Hawk Feathers.
The Ancient Tomahawk is a variant of the regular Tomahawk, with just some aesthetic differences. It is found east of the Wapiti Indian Reservation.
The Homing Tomahawk is the best Tomahawk variant in the game, sporting very good damage and better accuracy. It can only be obtained through crafting, requiring Owl Feathers.
Dynamite is extremely powerful, and it can be used as a throwable weapon to dispose of enemies quickly. It can be purchased by all fences after completing the "Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall" mission.
Fire Bottles are throwable weapons that can be used to engulf an enemy or location in flames. They can be crafted while resting at a camp or purchased by fences after "The Fine Joys of Tobacco" mission in Chapter 3 has been completed.
Volatile Fire Bottle
Volatile Fire Bottles are much better than regular ones, dealing way more damage and sporting better flames spread. They can be obtained through crafting by combining Fire Bottles with Moonshine. The recipe for the Volatile Fire Bottle is found to the northwest of Horseshoe Outlook, close to a brush fire.

Red Dead 2 Guide To Secret Weapons and Guns You Might've Missed
By Alessandro Fillari on
Lost And Legendary Arms
Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4, Xbox One, and now PC features a massive arsenal of weapons, from basic six-shooters and lever-action rifles to powerful shotguns and sniper rifles. In addition to the weapons you can buy from a gunsmith or pick up from run-of-the-mill fallen enemy, there are also many special weapons hidden in the world for you to find. Much like the side missions you come across, it's very easy to permanently miss out on some of these weapons, especially if you don't take the time to examine an area further or loot a dead bandit's corpse.
After spending many hours roaming the wilderness and towns of Red Dead Redemption 2's depiction of late-1800s America, we've amassed a large amount of melee weapons and firearms for Arthur to use when fighting against rival gang members and angry vagabonds. There's a surprising amount of items to find, some of which break away from the Western setting and reference cultures that have since disappeared in the face of the new century. To avoid spoilers, we've omitted some mentions of weapons that you can acquire late in the game, though we plan to update this feature in the coming weeks. Red Dead Redemption 2: best weapons and where to find all Rare and Unique weapons
It wouldn't be the Wild West without some spectacular gunplay and shiny new weapons.
There are 59 weapons to be found and used in Red Dead Redemption 2, with some being easier to unlock than others.
Weapons fall into three categories, which include standard weapons you are given during the story or that can be bought from a Gunsmith in any major town. You can also find Rare versions of these standard weapons throughout the story campaign and world.
Unique weapons that can be found by following treasure hunts, killing gunslingers or completing other side missions.
And then there are a few extra weapons that can be unlocked by pre-ordering Red Dead Redemption 2, or by playing GTA Online, including the double-action revolver and the stone hatchet.
Cleaning your weapons
All weapons can be deadly if you're a good shot, using Dead-Eye correctly or just getting up close and personal. But if you don't look after your weapons their performance will decrease significantly, even for Unique weapons. You need to keep a healthy stock of Gun Oil, which you can buy from a Gunsmith or find by looting dead enemies. Whenever you get a little downtime, be sure to clean your guns.
Buy the Upgraded Holster from a Gunsmith as soon as you can it will slow down the degradation of all weapons by 20%.
Customizing your weapons
Head to the Gunsmith and select Customize from the menu. You can now swap out the Components: barrel, scope, iron sights, stock and wrap. With pretty much every weapon, adding a new scope, longer barrel, iron sights or stock will improve its range and handling. Whenever you get the chance you should mod these. The wrap will just change the look of the weapon and not any actual stats.
How to holster and pick up weapons
If you're walking around a peaceful neighbourhood with weapons drawn you'll attract the wrong type of attention and get funny looks, which can affect your Honor rating. It also increases the chances of accidentally firing your gun when you only meant to say howdy to an old lady. Holster your weapon by tapping the left bumper (LB/L1). If you see a weapon on a body that you want to pick up just hold down the right bumper (RB/R1) and you'll swap it for the one you currently have in your hands. Be careful with this as you can end up leaving behind one of your favourite or customized weapons.
To carry more ammo, buy the Upgraded Bandolier and the Upgraded Gunbelt from the Gunsmith as soon as you're able, or complete challenges and get reinforced gear from the Trapper.
Best weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2
There are three revolvers to choose from. The $84 Schofield Revolver is the best, dealing decent damage and it has good accuracy and fire rate.
Alternatively, you can rob the Doctor's shop in Valentine. You will need to peer through the back window first in order to gain the ability to rob the place. Once inside, force the doc to take you to the back room, kill everyone, and loot the box on the table. You can Customise it to improve it and you've got a good early game firearm. Get a second one as soon as you're able to dual wield.
The Volcanic Pistol does the most damage and it's the cheapest at $150. The Semi-Automatic is best for fire rate and reloading, and the Mauser holds a lot of bullets and spits them out quickly.
It's a toss up between the Springfield Rifle and the Bold Action Rifle. But both are slow. The Bolt Action is a little more accurate and the Springfield does slightly more damage. Alternatively, the Lichefield Rifle is the best repeating rifle you can pick up for $145 if you're using a rifle as your main weapon.
The Repeating Shotgun does the most damage, but the sawn-off can be dual-wielded so get both.
The Carcano Rifle is the best sniper rifle so go for that. It has great range, will bring down an elephant and is pin-point accurate.
The Tomahawk is a brutal weapon that can kill with one throw at close range, and should be used for silent attacks. Just remember to pick it up again.
Even better, once you get to Saint Denis you can purchase the Homing Tomahawk Pamphlet from the fence. It might not be authentic, but attaching an owl feather to the regular tomahawk now makes it more likely to hit the target when thrown.
All Unique and Rare weapons
If you take on the Gunslinger side quests, you'll hunt down an old shootist called Billy Midnight. Kill him and you can take his rare Mauser Pistol, complete with gold engravings. It has a great fire rate, reload and accuracy. Although its damage is average, it's a good early-game gun and fairly easy to earn.
Another weapon you find by completing the Gunslinger side quests, this pistol isn't amazing but it's a nice replacement in the early game for your rusty old shootin' iron. Kill Flaco Hernandez and it's yours - he ain't gonna need it anymore.
Another weapon picked up after killing the gunslinger Emmet Granger. It has a beautiful pearl handle but isn't as good as Flaco's Revolver.
This is the final revolver you'll pick up by completing the Gunslingers side-quest. Don't forget to loot it after you've killed the final gunslinger. It's engraved with Canis Cane Edit, a nice little nod to Rockstar's open-world school caper, Bully.
This pearl-handled beauty is your reward for completing all the tasks in the Dutchesses and Other Animals challenge which tasks you with tracking down exotic items for a chap called Algernon Wasp. You won't meet him until Chapter 4 when he can be found in Saint Denis. Algernon's Revolver has an amazing rate of fire.
Here's how to unlock the Stone Hatchet by completing challenges in GTA Online.
This is a special revolver you can earn by completing headshot challenges in GTA Online.
Rare Rolling Back Rifle
This is a great sniper rifle that you earn during the end of the Magicians for Sport story mission. One of the guys who has kidnapped your friend will be carrying it so make sure you search all the dead bodies.
There's a cave on the far west of the map, north west of Big Valley, or west of Hanging Dog Ranch. Inside you'll find the mysterious hermit who wields this Rare Shotgun. It doesn't seem to be any more powerful than the regular double-barreled shotgun, but it looks amazing.
Rare Double-Barrel Shotgun
You'll have to kill a man for this one. Open up your map and set your waypoint below the letter "a" in Manito Glade. In this area, you will find a settler's home in the woods, and he's packing the Rare Double-Barrel Shotgun. Kill him and it's yours. Just be sure to loot him, otherwise, you won't collect it later in the game. The weapon is rather decorative, has a two-round capacity and can use a variety of shotgun ammo.
In the north-east area of Calumet Ravine is the Ancient Tomahawk. It is embedded in the broken target sitting on the ground.
South of the "k" in Window Rock and north of the tracks in the Grizzlies, you will see a building. Go to the right of it, and embedded in a tree stump you will find the Hunter Hatchet. It features a long-bearded axe which allows for greater control when planing or shaving wood.
A melee and throwing weapon, the Viking Hatchet features really neat handle bound in leather with Nordic patterns. Here's a guide to getting the Viking axe and Viking helmet so you can strut around looking completely out of time.
Broken Pirate Sword
This goes with the pirate hat, and we have a full guide to finding the pirate sword here. It's a knackered looking thing, but it's pretty lethal in a close-up fight.
Dead Eye targeting
Dead Eye targeting is the ability to slow down time and pick off enemies with specific shots to the head and other critical body parts. We have a full guide and tips to using Dead Eye for those that want to master it.

GTA Online Crossover Weapons
There are two weapons found in Grand Theft Auto Online that can be used in Red Dead Redemption 2.
To obtain the Double-Action Revolver in Red Dead 2, you must first find it in GTA Online. To do this, you'll have to complete a Treasure Hunt that is started upon receiving an email from [email protected]
Attached to the email will be a black and white picture of one of 20 locations, which will be random for you. The area in question, which you'll need to search, will be marked on your map with a yellow question mark, thankfully the search radius for the area is fairly wide.
You'll need to search this area for a note - which will be pinned to a random object: usually a rock, tree, or other pieces of the environment - and you'll need to use the photo to find the general area that the note is located in. Note that when you start to get close, you'll hear the sound of a wind chime.
Once you find the first clue, three more clues will appear on your map - the set of three clues can be found in any order:
- A naked corpse with a wound to the head found in a tiny cave near a river in the Tongva Hills.
- A gun case (that's empty) found next to a tree in Grapeseed, at Joad Lane.
- A blood-stained shovel found in a ruined building at Sandy Shores.
After finding the three clues, the final location of the treasure chest will be revealed - and will mark a random location on your map. Arriving at the site, you can spot two more corpses with another shovel, and a case that is marked "Boles Overland Stage Co." - open the case and you'll reveal the Double-Action Revolver, which will then be purchasable at Ammu-Nation.
Complete the headshot challenge you unlock by scoring 50 headshots against players or AI, and you'll unlock a variant of the weapon in Red Dead Redemption 2 (if you have linked your Rockstar Social Club Account).
The Stone Hatchet is a melee weapon that can also be unlocked in Red Dead Redemption 2 by first obtaining it in Grand Theft Auto Online.
While playing GTA Online, be on the lookout for a text message from Maude Eccles, the warrant officer that you may remember from the bounty hunting missions in GTA V's single-player mode.
Maude has a series of five Bounty Hunt missions to complete - once you complete all five, she'll send you the location of the Stone Hatchet.
After collecting the Stone Hatchet, you'll receive a challenge to get 25 kills with the Stone Hatchet - this is made easier by the weapon's Rampage ability, which offers a short window of invincibility after kills, which can be chained to extend the effect. Complete the challenge to unlock the Hatchet in Red Dead 2.
You start out with some fairly weak weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2, and you're going to want to get your hands on some new guns as soon as you can. Well in this Red Dead Redemption 2 best guns guide, we'll be detailing a full list of all the best pistols, shotguns, rifles, and more in Rockstar's wild west prequel.
On this page:
Best Weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2
These are the best weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2. We'll update this list as we find more, but these should give you the upperhand in any shootouts you encounter in the game.
Although Midnight's Pistol is certainly the more fancy weapon, the Semi Automatic Pistol is the more deadly weapon. As you can probably imagine, it's got one of the highest rates of fire of any weapon in the entire game, and it can be deadly in merely two hits, even from range. To purchase it, simply head to the nearest Gunsmith on the map.
The title of best rifle in Red Dead Redemption 2 could be awarded to the Springfield Rifle, but we'd have to choose the Lichfield Rifle due to its higher fire rate. It's a rifle that certainly packs a punch, while not sacrificing fire rate for accuracy or range. To obtain the Lichfield Rifle for Arthur Morgan, simply purchase it from any Gunsmith for $145.
Best Scoped Rifle
This isn't a unique weapon per se, but it's worth noting that you'll only be able to unlock the Carcano Rifle through story progression. If you're wondering why the powerful rifle isn't available for purchase during the main game, it's because it's locked behind Micah's story mission early into Chapter 6, which takes place in the Van Horn Trading Post. Complete this mission, and the Carcano Rifle will be yours to keep.
Alternatively, during the Magician’s for Sport mission earlier on in Red Dead Redemption 2, you can obtain the Rare Rolling Block Rifle. In the story mission, you’re going to have to rescue Josiah Trelawny, and then track down several bandits in a small corn field. After you’re done with the corn field section, you’ll be tasked to take out a number of bandits that are hiding out in a nearby barn. One of these bandits drops the Rare Rolling Block Rifle, and this is your only chance at obtaining the rare sniper rifle.
We've put together a lot of Red Dead Redemption 2 guides since launch. You can find them all in our RDR2 Walkthrough Hub
Just west of Hanging Dog Ranch, which is itself north of Big Valley, there lies a cave on the edge of the map. Within this cave is a rather odd individual with the rare shotgun, which looks the part and packs a punch.
Best Melee Weapon
The Stone Hatchet is a unique weapon that doesn’t come from a Gunslinger, but comes instead from challenges in GTA Online. While you’re playing GTA Online, you’ll get a text message from Maude Eccles, asking you to bring in five bounty targets in total. Complete this entire quest line (which isn’t too tricky), and you’ll unlock the Stone Hatchet in both GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2.
The weapons obtained by completing Gunslinger missions in Red Dead Redemption 2 aren't always the best, but we've rounded up a few of the better ones in this section of our weapons guide.
During the course of the Gunslinger side quests, you’re going to come across an elite cowboy named Billy Midnight. You can kill him to obtain Midnight’s Pistol, which is basically an elite version of the already pretty powerful Mauser pistol. For a walkthrough of where to find Billy Midnight, head over to our Red Dead Redemption 2 Gunslinger guide.
Guess what? Flaco’s Revolver is another Gunslinger weapon. It’s by no means the absolute best revolver in the game, but it’s still capable of packing a punch from a distance. For a guide to the location of Flaco Hernandez, check out our Red Dead Redemption 2 Gunslinger guide.
This brings us to the end of our Red Dead Redemption 2 guide on how to locate some of the best and unique weapons in the game, but as we previously mentioned, we’ll be updating this guide whenever we come across any new weapons of note. For now, you can head over to our Red Dead Redemption 2 Honor guide, or our page on how to dual wield in Red Dead Redemption 2 for more.

Best Red Dead Redemption 2 weapons - the most powerful guns to ensure cowboy carnage
If you want to choose the best Red Dead Redemption 2 weapons then you'll need to be selective, because there are around 60 of them available during the main campaign which gives you a large cache to take your pick from. There are restrictions on how many firearms you can take with you as there are only so many slots in your gun belt and horse saddle, and as your options include revolvers, shotguns, rifles, and more, you'll need to ensure the weapons you keep handy match up appropriately with your Red Dead Redemption 2 playing style. In order to help you select the right loadout for your upcoming battles, we've got details of the best Red Dead Redemption 2 weapons around, as well as information on how to mod your guns and create special ammo to provide additional useful effects during combat.
Want to get started with a free gun? We've got the details for how to get a free gun in Red Dead Redemption 2 in the video below:
How to mod weapons and ammo in Red Dead Redemption 2
Any weapon in the game can be improved with a swift visit to a gunsmith. These gun gurus will happily change your weapon’s look, mod it with better parts, and help you craft more effective ammo for a price. Everything from stag engravings for the stock of that rifle, to iron sights for a shotgun can be modded. Just select the Styles menu at a gunsmith and you can tweak your gun’s leather, engravings, carvings, varnish, and the type of metal that coats your weapon. For new parts, select Components, where you can customise your gun with a new stock, leather wrap, or a longer barrel to give your weapon increased accuracy.
Gunsmiths also sell different type of ammunition. For pistols and rifles, you’ve got Regular, Express (greater damage), and High Velocity (greater damage and increased range). With shotguns, you have the choice between Regular and Slug – the latter offers increased range and accuracy.
You can also make your own ammo out in the wilderness by setting up camp. Provided you have the right supplies and have unlocked the appropriate blueprints from the fence in Saint Denis, you can craft the likes of Split Point ammo for your pistol or rifle (which provides more damage and slower Dead Eye drain), or even explosive arrows. For the latter, you’ll need arrows, TNT, and flight feathers, which can be obtained by shooting most birds in the game then plucking their corpses. With the likes of Split Point, Express, and High Velocity ammo, you only need normal bullets to craft these more potent rounds.
Best Handguns in Red Dead Redemption 2
A gorgeous gun where beauty and brutality combine. The majesty of this firearm’s ornate etchings is matched by its brilliant firing speed, dead-on accuracy, and daunting damage stats. Dual-wield two of these pretty pistols and Arthur will be more or less unstoppable.
Arguably the best pistol in Arthur’s adventure. Holding 16 bullets and rocking a seriously impressive rate of fire, this handgun is your best friend in large-scale shootouts. Not only does it pack an ace reload rate, but it can also be dual-wielded with another single hand weapon. Pair it with the Schofield Revolver or Sawed-off Shotgun for the ultimate combo of speedy death and instant outlaw-crippling devastation.
Complete the Billy Midnight Gunslinger side quest, and this decorative, deadly handgun can be yours. With a brilliant fire rate, buttery handling, and impressive reload and accuracy stats, this pistol is close to the total package. While it’s not as powerful as the Volcanic Pistol, its overall strengths make it a more well-rounded gun. Good luck with that showdown with Billy, though. It took us seven attempts to win the pistol duel with the crotchety gunslinger. Try not to unholster your gun too early.
Best Rifles in Red Dead Redemption 2
One of the best guns you can get your hands on during your first few hours with Red Dead Redemption 2. The Springfield Rifle may be slow to reload, but it justifies its place on this list thanks to its awesome range and power. If you want to clear out gang hideouts from a distance – and haven’t played enough of the game to unlock the Carcano Rifle – the Springfield is the gun for you. Its stopping power is so great, it’s also an ideal option for taking down large predators, like brown and grizzly bears.
Probably the best repeater in the game, and a gun that packs one hell of a murderous punch. While its reload rate is borderline glacial, and its accuracy not quite class-leading, the Litchfield makes up for it with its amazing rate of fire and outlaw-eviscerating power. Great for down and dirty gang shootouts, you should buy the Litchfield as soon as Arthur’s criminal change purse can afford it.
Best Sniper Rifles in Red Dead Redemption 2
No other gun combines the accuracy and potency of this deadly sniper. The Carcano is so effective, the game stops you from unlocking it until chapter six. Once you finish the Micah Bell-focused mission at the beginning of Arthur’s final act, this ultra accurate sharpshooter becomes available. Boasting impressive range, damage and reload speed, this is the ultimate gun for putting down outlaws from hundreds of metres away.
Rare Rolling Block Rifle
While the vanilla Rolling Block Rifle can’t hold a candle to the Carcano, a super rare hybrid of the sniper deserves to make this list. During the chapter three mission ‘Magicians for Sport’, you have the chance to loot this beautiful rifle from the corpse of an enemy. Once you’ve taken out the bad guys hiding in the cornfields, Arthur will storm a nearby barn. One of these enemies holds the Rare Rolling Block Rifle, so once you've killed all of them, loot their corpses and this sniper will be yours - just try not to get distracted by those gorgeous markings on the handle.
Best Shotguns in Red Dead Redemption 2
If you like your cowboy killing sprees to be up close and personal, meet your new favourite firearm. Unlike every other shotty in the game (barring the Semi-Auto), the Repeating Shotgun can spew out slugs like it was a repeater rifle. Yes, its firing speed isn’t exactly stellar, but when you can hold this many cartridges in the chamber without reloading, only the most curmudgeonly of cowpokes would complain about it.
On its lonesome, the Sawed-off is merely a pretty good gun. Yet when you pair it with another Sawed-off, the murdery equation changes drastically. Arm Arthur with two of these shotties and the sheer firing power the outlaw can boast will stop any enemy or animal in the game. Get within spitting distance of any foe, and a pair of these dual-wielding weapons will instantly slay them.
If you want the ultimate version of this weapon, you should visit Manito Glade, just north of Annesburg. Out in the wilderness, you’ll find a shack owned by an extremely unwelcoming outlaw. Put the grumpy gunslinger down, and the Rare Double-Barrel Shotgun is yours. For close-range kills, there’s no more potent weapon in the game.
Best Melee Weapon in Red Dead Redemption 2
The most forceful close combat weapon in the game, and one that becomes even more potent if you visit the fence in Saint Denis. Pay a visit to the city’s criminal shop, and you can purchase the blueprints for a Homing Tomahawk. Once you’ve bought the extra murderous pamphlet, build a camp after you’ve acquired a normal tomahawk and the feather from an owl, and this homicidally accurate throwing weapon will be yours.
