A growing number of US consumers are becoming familiar with Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) like Metro, Boost Mobile, and Straight Talk. They operate using the towers and infrastructure from the big players but have their own rates, customer service, and phone selection.

Let’s take a look at one of them in particular: Cricket Wireless

About

Cricket Wireless (Cricket) initially launched in 1999 and is a US-based prepaid wireless service provider; it’s a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T. It offers its own lineup of GSM phones, many of which are also found at other carriers. As one might expect, it uses AT&T for its coverage.

Does Cricket have any special deals?

Currently you can find a number of phones discounted with new phone numbers, upgrades, and porting your existing number. Some models are even free with the right combination of port-in and signing up for a particular rate plan.

READ:Buying an unlocked phone? Consider these questions

Additionally, Cricket has discounted phones from Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung with some of them potentially free with a plan.

What are Cricket rate plans like?

Cricket rate plans are no-contract, meaning you can go month-to-month with no long-term agreement or cancellation fees. Moreover, they do not charge for going over your allotted data and taxes are included in the cost.

  • $30/month: Unlimited Talk and Text with 2GB of high-speed data
  • $40/month: Unlimited Talk and Text with 10GB of high-speed data
  • $55/month: Unlimited Talk and Text with unlimited data
  • $60/month: Unlimited Talk and Text with unlimited high-speed data 15GB mobile hotspot

Customers can save $5 per month on most plans with automatic bill payment. The $55 plan has data speeds which are limited to a max of 8Mbps while the $60 option is quicker and includes the hotspot feature. Depending on location and phone, subscribers may see 5G speeds on the $60 plan.

Does Cricket offer multiple line plans?

Customers interested in family plans or multiple lines can do so with discounted pricing. Cricket will let you calculate rates for two to five lines. On the $55 Unlimited Plan, for instance, you get at the following monthly rates:

  • 2 Lines – $80/mo ($30 discount)
  • 3 Lines – $90/mo ($75 discount)
  • 4 Lines – $100/mo ($120 discount)
  • 5 lines – $125/mo ($150 discount)

Which major prepaid carrier has the best $40 rate plan?

Are there any other Cricket features or offerings?

Cricket offers a handful of other options to its customers, most of which can pair with the aforementioned rate plans. Details here include international calling, insurance against lost and stolen phones, extra data, and mobile hotspot.

Cricket also sells Data Only options with 20GB ($35), 40GB ($50), and 100GB ($90) allotments.

What phones are available at Cricket?

Taking a look at the current lineup of phones offered through Cricket we find familiar names from brands like LG, Samsung, and Motorola. There are also devices from the likes of Nokia, and Alcatel, too.

Like most prepaid providers, phone selection skews toward affordability as opposed to performance. With that said, we do recognize there are some compelling devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S20+ and the LG Stylo 6.

AT&T is the largest wireless network in the US, serving nearly 160 million subscribers. And with it comes a large selection of phones. But what about its prepaid brand, Cricket Wireless? What options does it have when it comes to Android handsets?

To be sure, it doesn’t have the same variety of handsets, and a large percentage of them are older or refurbished phones.

Nevertheless, we’ve gathered up a handful of the best phones you can purchase at Cricket Wireless today. Because truth be told, there are still some incredible bargains to be had there.

As always, we suggest buying an unlocked phone or a used tier-one AT&T phone for use with AT&T Prepaid. The options are plentiful in both directions and you’ll likely get something more powerful.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus

Take Samsung’s flagship phone from 2020 and dial things up a smidge; that’s what you get from this one. It’s everything an early adopter could love, including a large screen, excellent cameras, and generous battery. Oh, and power on top of power.

Running the show is a late version of Android with Samsung’s much-improved custom touches, an experience we’ve really come to enjoy. Other features we love include the in-display fingerprint reader, wireless charging and power sharing, and its tons of storage space.

Samsung Galaxy A51

The Galaxy S series gets all of the fanfare, but the Galaxy A line is just as good for many users. Indeed, these lower cost options give consumers the same great Samsung design but with just the right amount of features. We’re talking maybe half the price yet still no noticeable difference in performance.

Standout features in the Galaxy A51 include a 6.5-inch HD display, and quad-camera (16MP main lens, 120 degree ultra wide, 2MP depth camera, and 2MP macro) array. An octa-core processor is paired 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. The phone runs Android 10 with a 4,000mAh battery should most users far beyond a full day.

Samsung Galaxy A51

Samsung Galaxy A10e

For a fraction of the price of a flagship experience customers can purchase Samsung Galaxy A10e, a phone that’s perfect for first-time and prepaid users.

Standout features include a 5.83-inch HD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front-facing sensor. An octa-core processor is paired with Android 9.0, and there’s plenty of storage room available internally and via microSD expansion cards. The 3,000mAh battery should get typical users through more than a full day, and the USB Type-C port means lightning fast charging.

LG Stylo 6

Big, practical, and the only one with a stylus, the LG Stylo 6 provides users with a large screen and an extra bit of functionality. The 6.8-inch display offers up plenty of high-definition space for scribbling notes, marking up documents, and more.

Running Android 10, the phone is powered by an octa-core processor with 3GB RAM. Storage comes in at 64GB but a microSD expansion card slot opens the door for up to 2TB external media.

Wrapping things up, the LG handset has a triple camera configuration on the rear, front-facing 13-megapixel selfie camera, and a 4,000mAh battery.

Nokia 3.1 Plus

Younger users might not even know that there used to be a Nokia from the days before Android. Nevertheless, we love the stuff that the brand puts out today and find it to be some of the more interesting value propositions.

Don’t let that price fool you; it’s all the phone that most prepaid users might need as 2020 gets underway. Included are a large (5.99-inch) screen and a 3,500mAh battery that lasts well beyond a day. We’re also really fond of the Android 9 Pie software build and USB Type-C charging.

When you’re buying multiple phones for a family you don’t want to spend any more than necessary. The Nokia phone is an excellent option for first time users and parents alike.

Motorola Moto G7 Supra

We absolutely adore what Motorola does with its Android phones, particularly along the lower end of the price spectrum. Its handsets run a bare bones Android experience that leaves things pretty much the way Google intended. In other words, clean, intuitive, and user friendly.

Here, you get a massive (6.2-inch) HD screen, a modern build of Android, and respectable smattering of mid-range hardware. Key details include an octa-core processor, 32GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot for external media.

Other things we appreciate? A water resistant coating, USB Type-C charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The best part of all? There’s a 5,000mAh battery that’s good enough to get typical users through two days of usage.

Can I use my own phone at Cricket?

You can often use your current GSM phone, especially if it was previously paired with AT&T. Head to Cricket’s website to check whether your specific model is supported. You’ll want to ensure that your phone is unlocked prior to purchasing the SIM card kit currently priced at just $10.

Cricket Upgrades its Sub-$100 Icon Series

Oct 8, 2021, 3:10 PM   by Rich Brome

Cricket today launched the Icon 3, the third in its series of own-brand phones that sell for under $100. The Icon 3 sells for $90. The phone is very much entry-level, yet has significant upgrades over the Icon 2 it replaces. The new model adds a fingerprint reader and steps up to a taller 6.5-inch display with a modern notch design. RAM has been upgraded from 1 to 3 GB, and storage from 16 to 32 GB. The main camera is also a bit sharper at 8 megapixel, and the battery slightly larger at 3,500 mAh. It's powered by a MediaTek Helio A20 processor. While the Icon 2 was manufactured by Tinno, the Icon 3 is manufactured FIH, a subsidiary of Foxconn. Cricket's Ovation 2, released in June, is also made by FIH. The Ovation 2 was also released under the AT&T brand with a different name, and regulatory documents indicate AT&T plans to do the same with the Icon 3. Cricket is a brand of AT&T.

Motorola's New Budget Phone is Already Very Popular

Motorola today announced the moto g pure, the company's latest entry-level phone. The phone will be sold by essentially every carrier in the US, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, Metro, Boost, US Cellular, and Xfinity. Verizon will be the first to offer it, for $150 starting October 14th. Other carriers will offer the phone "in the coming months". Motorola will sell the phone unlocked for $160, with pre-orders starting October 14th. Both variants will be powered by a MediaTek Helio G25 chip. The phone's features include a fingerprint reader on the back, basic water resistance, headset jack, and dual-band Wi-Fi. The HD+ display measures 6.5 inches. The 13 megapixel main camera is joined by a depth camera for portrait shots and a 5 megapixel front camera. Motorola claims two days of battery life from the 4,000 mAh battery. It has 3 GB RAM and 32 GB of storage, which is expandable with a memory card. It comes with Android 11 and Motorola promises one major OS upgrade plus two years of security updates (at least quarterly).

Cricket Adds HBO Max to Premium Plan

Aug 19, 2021, 9:05 AM   by Rich Brome

Cricket is now offering a free HBO Max subscription included with its top-end unlimited plan. The HBO Max subscription is the ad-supported tier, which is normally $10/month on its own. The eligible plan is otherwise unchanged, and runs $60/month for one line (or as low as $32/month/line for five lines). Cricket currently offers two unlimited plans: one for $55 and one for $60. The $60 plan adds 5G access, 15 GB of mobile hotspot data, 150 GB of cloud storage, and now HBO Max. Perks like this are currently rare with prepaid plans in the US. Cricket is a brand of AT&T, which currently owns HBO, although AT&T has started the process of spinning off its media businesses.

Jul 9, 2021, 8:00 AM   by Rich Brome

Boost Mobile started selling the new Motorola moto g stylus 5G this week. Cricket starts selling the phone today, and AT&T will start sales July 16th. All three brands are offering the phone for far less than the $400 that Motorola is asking for the unlocked version. Boost's web site lists the full price as $250 but is currently selling it for $200. Cricket's price is $100 for new customers or $150 for existing customers. AT&T is selling the phone for $180 on a 36-month installment plan ($5/month) with an unlimited plan (for both new and existing customers, for a limited time). The version offered by carriers has 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, while Motorola's pricier unlocked version has 6 GB RAM and 256 GB storage (though the phone has expandable storage.) T-Mobile and Metro are also slated to sell the phone soon.

Motorola Adds 5G to the Moto G Stylus

Jun 9, 2021, 8:00 AM   by Rich Brome

Motorola today announced the moto g stylus 5G, a version of this year's moto g stylus with 5G and a larger battery, for $400. The new 5G model has excellent support for all 5G and 4G networks in the US, (except mmWave 5G.) The battery has been bumped up from 4,000 mAh to a whopping 5,000 mAh. The 5G model has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset instead the Snapdragon 678 in the 4G model. Although the 480 is a 4-series chip, it's newer than the 678 and offers similar performance. The 48 megapixel main camera offers access to the full 48 megapixel resolution, and the fingerprint reader is located on the back instead of the side. Other specs and features are similar to the 4G model, including a huge 6.8-inch full-HD display, wide camera, macro camera, 16 megapixel selfie camera, fast charging, memory card slot, and headset jack. The software is Android 11 with a nearly stock Google interface. Added stylus-oriented software includes the Moto Note app, Coloring Book app, and a customizable shortcut bar that appears when the stylus is removed. The stylus itself has been redesigned to be easier to remove and replace, and has a new feature that can help you find the stylus if you lose it. New features in the camera app include Spot Color for video and Dual Capture, which combines video from the front and rear cameras. The moto g stylus 5G will come in Cosmic Emerald. AT&T, Cricket, T-Mobile, Metro, Boost, Xfinity, and Spectrum will offer a version with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage (launch timing and pricing TBA), while the unlocked version sold by Motorola (plus B&H, Best Buy, and Amazon) will up that to 6 GB RAM / 256 GB storage. The unlocked version goes on sale for $400 on June 14th.

The Ovation 2 is manufactured by FIH (a division of Foxconn) and sourced for Cricket by Emblem, which has a multi-year contract to supply AT&T and Cricket with private-label phones. The original Ovation was manufactured by Tinno.

VinSmart Enters US Market with Two Sub-$100 Phones for AT&T

Feb 25, 2021, 2:00 PM   by Rich Brome

Vietnamese manufacturer VinSmart has officially entered the US phone market thanks to a deal with AT&T for "nearly 2 million smartphones". AT&T (and its Cricket prepaid brand) recently started selling two distinct entry-level phone models from VinSmart. Both are under $100 and are white-labeled, meaning they bear the AT&T or Cricket brand (instead of VinSmart or its Vsmart brand). AT&T has turned to Chinese manufacturer Tinno for such phones in recent years. But with the US government's hostile posture toward Chinese telecom companies in the last few years, AT&T may be looking to diversify its suppliers beyond China. The more affordable of the two models is the AT&T Fusion Z. It has a 6-inch HD display and USB-C, but its specs are otherwise minimal, including Android Go Edition, a Snapdragon 215 chip, and a 5 megapixel main camera. AT&T Prepaid shows the list price as $80 but is selling it for $40. Walmart is selling the same phone as the "Motivate" for $50. The slightly higher-end model is the Cricket Influence, which runs full Android 10 thanks to 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 chip. Features include a fingerprint reader, modern notched HD display with Gorilla Glass 3, and a 13-megapixel camera plus depth camera for portrait mode. Both phones have a headset jack and memory card slot. Cricket shows a list price of $110 for the Influence, but is selling it for $40 to both new and existing customers. Walmart is selling the same phone for AT&T Prepaid as the AT&T Maestro Plus, for $90. The original "AT&T Maestro" was manufactured by Tinno.

Motorola Unveils Full Affordable Lineup for 2021

Jan 8, 2021, 9:00 AM   by Rich Brome

Motorola today unveiled a full lineup of four new affordable phones, including three g-series models ranging from $169 – $299 and one 5G model for $399. All four feature large batteries (4,000 – 5,000 mAh) and large displays (6.5 – 6.8 inches). All four also include a fingerprint reader, multiple cameras, headset jack, memory card slot, USB-C connector, and a "water-repellant design" that protects against accidental spills, splashes, sweat, or light rain. They ship with Android 10 and Motorola promises one full OS version update plus two years of security updates. Moto's latest camera app supports AI scene detection and optimization, Google Lens, portrait mode, RAW format, Active Photos, Auto Smile Capture, Gesture Selfie, time-lapse, and slow-motion on all models. All four also support gestures such as Lift to unlock, Flip for DND (Do Not Disturb), Pick up to silence, and Fast flashlight, where a quick double-chop motion turns the flashlight on or off. All four phones will be available unlocked as well as from many US carriers.

  • moto g play (2021): The most affordable at $170, this phone has a 6.5-inch HD display with notch, huge 5,000 mAh battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 chipset, 3 GB RAM, and 32 GB built-in storage. Its primary 13 megapixel camera is assisted by a depth camera for portrait mode, and the front camera is 5 megapixel. It also has 10W fast charging. The new moto g play will be offered in the coming months by AT&T, Cricket, Boost Mobile, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi, Metro by T-Mobile, T-Mobile, Republic Wireless, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile.

The upgraded main camera enables a Night Vision mode and better low-light performance in general. The camera app also gains Cinemagraph mode, Group Selfie, and Spot Color for video. The fingerprint reader moves to the side and the display is slightly larger at 6.6 inches, with a corner hole-punch design. This new moto g power will sell for $250, although Best Buy will sell a variant with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage for $200. It will also come to Boost Mobile, Cricket, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi, Republic Wireless, US Cellular, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile in the coming months.
  • moto g stylus (2021): This model adds a stylus that stows in the bottom-right of the phone. It comes with two special apps: Moto Note and Coloring Book. The stylus also offers system-wide shortcuts and works with third-party apps. This is the only model of the four to come with a smaller 4,000 mAh battery, which Motorola says was necessary to make room for the stylus. It has several spec upgrades compared to the g power, including a larger 6.8-inch display with full-HD resolution, Snapdragon 678 chipset, 128 GB storage, 8-megapixel wide-angle camera, 16 megapixel selfie camera, and 4K video capture. It will sell for $300 unlocked. Boost Mobile, Cricket, Consumer Cellular, and Republic Wireless will also offer it in the coming months.
  • Motorola one 5G ace: Combines the best of the g power and g stylus specs (minus the stylus) while adding 5G (sub-6 GHz only) thanks to its Snapdragon 750G chipset. Other upgrades include 6 GB RAM, NFC, and an official IP rating for water resistance: IP54 for the T-Mobile version and IP52 for other versions. The display measures 6.7 inches with a centered hole-punch design, and the fingerprint reader is located on the back. It will run $400 unlocked. AT&T, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi, Metro by T-Mobile, T-Mobile, Republic Wireless, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile will also offer it in the coming months.
Unlocked versions of all four phones are available for pre-order starting today, with full availability on January 14th. Unlocked models can be purchased from Best Buy, Walmart, B&H Photo, Amazon, and motorola.com.

The K92 5G will be sold by AT&T, Cricket, and US Cellular starting at just $359, breaking the $399 barrier for the first time. Aug 17, 2020, 4:02 PM   by Rich Brome   updated Aug 17, 2020, 4:11 PM

While many carrier-branded phones are absolutely entry-level — like last year's Cricket Icon — the Ovation is slightly higher-end, with a 4,000 mAh battery, triple rear cameras, NFC, 3 GB RAM, dual-band Wi-Fi, fingerprint reader, and USB-C. It has a large, modern 6.5-inch display with a small notch and HD resolution. Like the Icon, the Ovation is manufactured by Tinno Mobile, which owns the Wiko brand and also makes phones for Blu. Other features of the Ovation include a MediaTek Helio P22 processor, 32 GB storage, memory card slot, Android 10, headset jack, and Gorilla Glass 5 on the front. It's available now from Cricket for $130. Like all Cricket-branded phones, it's covered by Cricket's two-year "Worry Free" warranty.

Samsung and LG Launch New Affordable Phones on US Carriers

Jul 13, 2020, 3:24 PM   by Rich Brome

US carriers have launched a flurry of new entry-level phones from LG and Samsung in recent weeks. The phones include three new models from each of the two manufacturers. They range in price from $60 to $260.

  • LG's new most affordable phone goes by many names and ranges in price from $60 to $160. It's offered by just about every carrier except Verizon. T-Mobile, Sprint, and Metro offer it as the Aristo 5. Boost offers it as the Tribute Monarch. U.S. Cellular offers it as the K8x. All of those versions come with 32 GB of storage. Only AT&T's version comes with just 16 GB of storage, which they offer from AT&T Prepaid as the Phoenix 5, or from Cricket as the Fortune 3. Oddly, Cricket also offers this phone as the Risio 4. The Risio 4 and K8x have a front camera that's downgraded from 5 to 3 megapixel. Key specs in common include a 5.7-inch HD display with notch, MediaTek Helio P22 processor, 2 GB RAM, and a 3,000 mAh Battery. It also has a 13-megapixel main camera, dedicated wide-angle camera, and a rear fingerprint reader.
  • LG Harmony 4: Currently available only from Cricket (for $140), this step-up model has a larger display (6.1-inch), larger battery (3,500 mAh), and more RAM (3 GB). It also has USB-C and a better front camera. Regulatory filings indicate it may also come to Verizon prepaid and TracFone using the Sprint network.
  • LG K51: Already available from T-Mobile, Metro, and Boost, this model is now available from Verizon for $168. Compared to the Harmony 4, it offers an even larger display and battery. It's powered by a MediaTek Helio P22 processor.
  • Samsung A01: First launched on Verizon in April, Samsung's most affordable phone is now available from AT&T, Cricket, and Metro, for $115, $60, and $160, respectively. It has USB-C and fast charging, but no fingerprint reader.
  • Samsung A11: A big step up from A01, this $180 phone is now available from AT&T and Verizon. It will launch with Boost on July 21st at a limited-time price of $130. It has a 6.4-inch HD display with a hole-punch design, 4,000 mAh battery, fast charging, fingerprint reader, and a dedicated wide-angle camera.
  • Samsung A21: Now available from Verizon, T-Mobile, Metro, Sprint, and Boost. While the standard price is $250, Metro is charging $260 while Boost is currently offering it for $200. It has a similar display and battery compared to the A11, but has upgraded cameras, MediaTek Helio P35 processor, 3 GB RAM, and NFC.

AT&T Launches mmWave 5G for Consumers, Bringing 5G to Cricket

Mar 6, 2020, 12:02 PM   by Rich Brome

With the launch today of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra, AT&T is now offering consumers access to its faster mmWave "5G+" network in parts of 35 cities. Before today, consumers could only access the company's sub-6 GHz 5G network, which offers broader coverage. The faster mmWave "5G+" network was previously restricted to business customers. To access "5G+", consumers will need to be on either the "Unlimited Extra" or "Unlimited Elite" plan. The Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra are the first phones for the US that can access both types of 5G networks. AT&T also announced plans to launch 5G service for customers of its Cricket prepaid brand, starting "soon" with the Samsung Galaxy S20+ on an unspecified "compatible plan".

LG K30 Series Proliferates on US Carriers

Oct 1, 2019, 10:12 AM   by Rich Brome

LG's entry-level K30 2019 model has launched in several different versions, under a variety of names, at AT&T, T-Mobile, and Cricket in recent weeks. Cricket launched the phone as the Escape Plus a few weeks ago, and sells it for $80. Since then, AT&T Prepaid has launched the same phone as the Arena 2 for $120, and LG now sells it unlocked as the K30 2019 for $140. Also, a slightly higher-end version with a fingerprint reader and better camera (13 megapixel instead of 8) is now available as the Prime 2 on AT&T (also $120) and Aristo 4+ on T-Mobile for $162.50. Those two models also differ: the Prime 2 has NFC, while the Aristo 4+ has dual-band Wi-Fi instead. Unusually, the Prime 2 and Aristo 4+ have only 16 GB of storage, while the otherwise lower-end Escape Plus and Arena 2 have 32 GB. All versions in the series have a tall HD display, 3,000 mAh battery, dedicated Google Assistant button, 5-megapixel selfie camera, 3.5mm headset jack, and a memory card slot.

Cricket Launches Data-Only Plans

Apr 18, 2019, 1:05 PM   by Rich Brome   updated Apr 18, 2019, 5:01 PM

Cricket has announced new service plans that include only data and messaging, with no access to voice service. With the plans, messaging (SMS and MMS) is unlimited, but international service is not included. Data allotments are for high-speed data at the full speed of AT&T's LTE network, instead of capped at 8 Mbps as with Cricket's other plans. Streaming video is limited to SD quality by default, although HD can be enabled. The plans cost: $25/month for 3 GB of data, $35 for 10 GB, and $70 for 30 GB. A $5/month discount is available for the top plan when using AutoPay, making it $65/month. Add-ons are also available for even more data: $5 for an extra 2 GB or $10 for 5 GB. Cricket is also launching the Cricket Turbo Hotspot, a new mobile hotspot made by Netgear, for $120. Lastly, customers who switch to Cricket can take $200 off a Samsung Galaxy S10, or get the Samsung Galaxy J2 Pure for free.

Alcatel Refreshes Affordable Lineup

Feb 24, 2019, 11:00 AM   by Rich Brome

The new Alcatel 1s, 3, and 3L improve the specs of Alcatel's most affordable Android phones with features like more RAM, and taller displays with a notch. Although these specific models aren't coming to the US, such models often come to the US as carrier-exclusive models with minor spec changes.

  • 1s: Similar to the 1x announced at CES, (which came to Cricket as the Onyx,) but with 3 GB of RAM, automatic scene detection in the camera app, an octa-core processor (Spreadtrum SC9863A), and Android 9 (Pie). Like the 1x, it has a 5.5" tall (2:1 ratio) HD display, dual rear cameras, and a fingerprint reader.
  • 3: Has a taller (19.5:9) display thanks to a small notch for the selfie camera. It's also HD and measures 5.9 inches. It comes in two mirrored gradient finishes: blue-purple and black-blue. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor and 3 GB of RAM. It has dual rear cameras, a fingerprint reader, and a 3,500 mAh battery. It also has both a memory card slot and 3.5mm audio jack.
  • 3L: Identical to the 3, but with 2GB of RAM and a textured back. Some versions leave out the fingerprint reader as well. (not shown)

AT&T Taps Emblem to Make Branded Phones Starting In 2019

Oct 25, 2018, 9:19 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

Emblem Solutions revealed itself today and says it will make smartphones, tablets, and feature phones for AT&T beginning next year. The new company is acting as a white label manufacturer and will supply devices exclusively to AT&T, AT&T Prepaid, and Cricket Wireless. AT&T has a financial stake in the company and placed two of its own employees on Emblem's board of directors. Emblem says it has a diverse set of manufacturing facilities, located in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The two companies expect the first AT&T-branded device from Emblem to reach the market by the end of 2019. AT&T didn't indicate what type of device Emblem will supply first. AT&T isn't the first to offer branded devices made by a white label manufacturer. Both T-Mobile and Verizon have sold phones under their own brand name.

Cricket's Top Unlimited Plan No Longer Throttles Users By Default

Sep 28, 2018, 12:55 PM   by Eric M. Zeman   updated Sep 28, 2018, 2:46 PM

Cricket Wireless recently refreshed its service plans with a new feature to its best unlimited option. Notably, the $60-per-month Unlimited Extra plan is no longer subject to the carrier's speed cap. Prior to this change, Cricket's two Unlimited plans were capped at speeds of 3 Mbps for Unlimited and 8 Mbps for Unlimited Max. Cricket is now advertising the Unlimited Extra (which replaces the Max) as including "fast 4G LTE data." Even so, the small print warns that subscribers to the new plan may be subject to temporarily slowed data when the network is congested. Further, video streaming is capped at 1.5 Mbps, or SD quality. Cricket doesn't say exactly how fast the Unlimited Extra plan allows customers to go. The standard Unlimited plan, which costs $55 per month, still carries the 3 Mbps speed limit. Cricket's 2 GB and 5 GB plans, conversely, may have strict data limits, but speeds are available up to 8 Mbps.

ZTE Blade X2 Max Pops Up On FCC Website, But Its Future Is Uncertain

Sep 24, 2018, 11:19 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

The FCC today revealed the ZTE Blade X2 Max in documents made public on the agency's website. The phone, a follow-up to the Blade X Max, appears to be bound for Cricket Wireless based on branding seen on the user manual and AT&T LTE banding (14/30). Other features confirmed by the FCC include dual rear cameras, a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB-C port for charging. The Blade X2 Max relies on a nano SIM card and the tray also supports microSD memory cards. The phone's screen adopts the 16:9 aspect ratio. The draft user manual makes reference to the size of the display, which it says measures 6 inches with full HD resolution. The manual also indicates the battery may be 4,080mAh, and the phone may include 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. Last, the manual notes the phone's two rear cameras are a 16-megapixel main sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera is 8 megapixels. Information found in the draft user manual is subject to change. Given ZTE's current position in the U.S. market, it is possible this phone will never reach the market. ZTE was forced to put operations on hold for three months after the U.S. banned it from accessing U.S.-made parts and software. ZTE only returned to full operations in July. The company says it still considers the U.S. market vital to its success. ZTE implied it will most likely sell new devices direct to consumers online rather than through carrier distribution deals. Cricket has not confirmed that it will sell the ZTE Blade X2 Max.

AT&T and Cricket Go After More Phone Traffickers

Sep 18, 2018, 7:41 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

AT&T and its prepaid business Cricket Wireless have filed a third lawsuit against people suspected of illegally trafficking cell phones. The lawsuit is like two others AT&T has already filed against several businesses and individuals in New Jersey and Florida. Trafficked phones are typically purchased in bulk from AT&T or Cricket Wireless at a discount and then unlocked without permission by AT&T/Cricket. The buyers often discard the original packaging and sell the phones at higher prices to make a profit. AT&T says this practice "negates the subsidy that AT&T Prepaid and Cricket intended to benefit the consumer." The new complaint was filed this month in the U.S. District Court for the District of New York against CellNTell.

Cricket Offering Galaxy S9 Promo and Open Enrollment for Insurance

Sep 14, 2018, 9:43 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

Cricket Wireless today announced several promotions timed with the arrival of the fall season. First up, customers who open a new line of service with Cricket and port in their number can buy the Samsung Galaxy S9 for $499, a savings of $120 off the regular price. Alternately, new customers can snag the LG Fortune 2 for free. This offer is available through November 8. Cricket is offering four lines of "unlimited data" for $100 per month. This plan includes 22 GB of high-speed data, after which the speeds may be slowed down when the network is congested. Cricket's network allows for maximum download speeds of 3 Mbps, with video streams capped at 1.5 Mbps, or standard definition. Last, Cricket is offering customers the opportunity to enroll in Cricket Protect. Cricket's insurance program includes quick and convenient phone replacements and covers broken glass and water damage. Cricket Protect costs $7 per month. The program is automatically offered to people when they buy a new device. The open enrollment lets people who don't have insurance sign up for the program. Cricket says people seeking to add their phone to Cricket Protect will need to bring their device to a local Cricket store for a quick inspection. The open enrollment period lasts through November 8.

AT&T and Cricket Take Phone Traffickers to Court

Aug 31, 2018, 4:02 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

AT&T and its prepaid business Cricket Wireless are targeting cell phone traffickers with legal action. The company has filed lawsuits against several businesses and individuals suspected of trafficking new prepaid cellphones. Trafficked phones are typically purchased in bulk from AT&T or Cricket Wireless at a discount and then unlocked without permission by AT&T/Cricket. The buyers often discard the original packaging and sell the phones at higher prices to make a profit. AT&T says this practice "negates the subsidy that AT&T Prepaid and Cricket intended to benefit the consumer." The lawsuits, filed with the U.S. district court in New Jersey, target US Mobile Pros LLC and Maz Wireless, LLC.

why cant i hear text messages being sent to me while im on this phone when my other phones i could

Asked by: kathoi

Please pardon us but we are not clear on your inquiry about the LG Escape® Plus | Cricket Wireless, Model # LMX320CM and will need some clarification. If you are asking if the phone will read your texts, this feature (as well as sending texts using your voice) is available through Google and the free apps that you can download from Google Play. Google is installed on your phone by default and it provides basic voice texting functionality without additional software. Open the Google app, select More in the lower-right corner, then select Settings > Voice Match & see if voice matching is activated. If you have the feature, you can turn on the Access with Voice Match toggle switch. When you speak the 'Show me my last message' command, Google announces the sender of the previous five messages. Then, it asks if you want each message to be read or skipped. Those you approve are read aloud. After each message is read, you have the option to send a reply using your voice....^Ivan

The best Cricket phones to spend your money on

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

Cricket Wireless offers one of the best prepaid wireless services in the United States. For significantly less money than you’d pay as a postpaid customer, you can get unlimited talk, text, and data on the AT&T network. However, you might be wondering which are the best Cricket phones you can buy to use on that network? Don’t worry; we’re here to help you out with that!

Cricket Wireless offers a limited selection of phones you can buy by walking into a store or shopping online at the Cricket site. Most of the best Cricket phones are budget and mid-range offerings, but there are a few flagships in there, too. Keep in mind that pretty much any device that works on AT&T (or T-Mobile) will also work on Cricket. That means, in some cases, the best Cricket phone is the one that’s currently in your pocket.

The best Cricket phones:

Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of the best Cricket phones regularly as new devices launch.

1. Apple iPhone 12 series

David Imel / Android Authority

You may be on an Android site, but there’s no denying that the new iPhone 12 series are a great bunch. These phones find a sweet spot that nicely balances performance and usability, and all of them come with stunning cameras, incredible performance, and an amazing ecosystem of apps and accessories.

2. Apple iPhone SE

Budget premium phones are all the hype in 2020, with the Pixel 4a and iPhone SE offering amazing quality at very accessible price points. Unfortunately, the Pixel 4a isn’t on Cricket’s website yet, but the iPhone SE is available for purchase right now, and it’s easily one of the best Cricket phones.

The iPhone SE offers the Apple promise at about $400. It includes the familiar glass and metal design we saw on the iPhone 8 and has a very competitive camera. Users will also love that Apple didn’t skimp out on the processor, as the iPhone SE uses the same Apple A13 Bionic processor we see in iPhone 11 handsets. Other benefits over the Pixel 4a include wireless charging and an IP67 rating, two features Google’s budget phone lacks.

Check iPhone SE pricing

Apple iPhone SE specs:

  • Display: 4.7-inch, 1,334 x 750
  • SoC: Apple A13 Bionic
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Storage: 64/128/256GB
  • Camera: 12MP
  • Front camera: 7MP
  • Battery: 1,821mAh
  • Software: iOS 13

3. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is technically a part of the S20 series, but the Fan Edition is different enough to warrant its own mention. In fact, it might just be the affordable flagship sleeper hit of 2020. The phone takes a kitchen-sink approach with a brilliant 120Hz display, bells and whistles like an IP68 rating, wireless charging, and a trio of very competent cameras. Yet, it’s one of the most affordable Samsung flagships you can get.

The phone competes directly against the OnePlus 8T, and for the most part, bests it if you are looking for a more well-rounded package with significantly better cameras and feature set. For the most part, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE offers more bang for your buck with software features and a competent feature set. It’s definitely one of the best Cricket phones you can get if you’re looking for a premium experience without the premium price.

Check Galaxy S20 FE pricing

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE specs:

  • Display: 6.5-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 865
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Cameras: 12, 12, and 8MP
  • Front camera: 32MP
  • Battery: 4,500mAh
  • Software: Android 10

4. Samsung Galaxy A52 5G

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is one of Samsung’s biggest mid-range entries for 2021. It’s a great Cricket phone for those who want a good phone but don’t want to pay $1,000 to get one.

The device offers some premium features you would otherwise have to pay up for. These include a large 120Hz display, all-day battery life, a good main camera, and an outstanding design. Of course, performance could be better, but if you’re a casual user, you’ll be more than satisfied considering the price and its other improvements.

Check Galaxy A52 5G pricing

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G specs:

  • Display: 6.5-inch Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 750G
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Cameras: 64, 12, 5, and 5MP
  • Front camera: 32MP
  • Battery: 4,500mAh
  • Software: Android 11

5. Samsung Galaxy A32 5G

Those who want to save even more for a pretty good Samsung experience should also consider the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G. It still comes with 5G supports and costs less than the A52 5G and an acceptable set of specs.

Like other A-series devices, it comes with a large 5,000mAh battery, which means it should have awesome battery life. Especially when you consider its modest specs won’t take a toll on your resources. Its design is still awesome, and the display pretty large. Samsung didn’t skimp out on camera versatility either, as you get four lenses to choose from.

Check Galaxy A32 5G pricing

Samsung Galaxy A32 5G specs:

  • Display: 6.7-inch, HD+
  • SoC: MediaTek MT6853 Dimensity 720 5G
  • RAM: 4/6/8GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Cameras: 48, 8, 5, and 2MP
  • Front camera: 13MP
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Software: Android 11

6. Samsung Galaxy A12

Samsung has plenty of great affordable options with great-looking designs and enough powers to keep casual users happy. Needless to say, these phones will also cost much less than the company’s higher-end handsets, and the Samsung Galaxy A12 will surely keep your wallet healthy.

Modest specs accompany the thin and stylish design. It’s nothing to write home about, but you get a price nice design, a large HD display, and a very healthy battery size that should keep this phone running for long. It also sports a quad-camera setup, which is outstanding at this price point.

Check Galaxy A12 pricing

Samsung Galaxy A12 specs:

  • Display: 6.5-inch, HD+
  • SoC: Mediatek MT6765 Helio P35
  • RAM: 2/4/6GB
  • Storage: 32/64/128GB
  • Cameras: 48, 5, 2, and 2MP
  • Front camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Software: Android 10

7. Motorola Moto G Power

The Moto G Power’s USP is its battery life. It packs a 5,000mAh cell that can last up to three days, according to Motorola. The battery should be good for 150 hours of music playback or 27 hours of video binging. Not bad!

More:The best Motorola phones

The G Power is a mid-range smartphone, but this Cricket version is a bit downgraded. This one has two cameras, as opposed to three, and it also sports a larger screen. In addition, it’s packing the Snapdragon 662 chipset under the hood. We like the modern design with a punch-hole display. It also sports a headphone jack and supports expandable storage. These things combined make the Moto G Power one of the best Cricket phones you can currently get.

Check Moto G Power pricing

Moto G Power specs:

  • Display: 6.6-inch Full HD+
  • Chipset: Snapdragon 662
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 64GB
  • Cameras: 48, 2, and 2MP
  • Front camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Software: Android 10

8. LG Stylo 6

LG’s Stylo line is akin to an entry-level Samsung Galaxy Note line. That’s because Stylos offer big displays and come with a built-in stylus, just like Samsung’s Note line. However, Stylo phones are considerably cheaper than Note phones due to several cut corners.

For example, the stylus you get with a Stylo phone is not powered like on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, nor does it connect to the phone via Bluetooth. Instead, it’s essentially just a plastic stylus.

The latest Stylo is the LG Stylo 6, and it’s one of the best Cricket phones to get on a tighter budget. It’s perfect for people who want a big, hefty phone, but don’t want a high, hefty price.

Check Stylo 6 pricing

LG Stylo 6 specs:

  • Display: 6.8-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Mediatek Helio P35

9. Your current phone

Although this list of the best Cricket phones only includes devices you can actually buy from the carrier, that doesn’t mean those are the only devices you can use. Cricket has a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) program, which allows you to use almost any GSM-compatible device on the network.

With that in mind, if you are looking to switch to Cricket and already own an unlocked version of a compatible device, you don’t even need to buy a new phone. In fact, if you do take advantage of the BYOD program, you can even earn some hefty discounts and bill credits.

Additionally, if you find a great deal on a smartphone that saves you some cash over buying directly from Cricket, you can bring that device with you.

To check whether or not your current device is compatible, you’ll need to visit this page and enter your phone’s IMEI number. You can locate that `number by dialing “*#06#” using your phone’s built-in dialer app. However, in general, any device that works on AT&T, T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, Simple Mobile, etc., should work with Cricket. Just double-check before signing on the dotted line!
