Can I use code to change the color of my MacBook Pro keyboard backlight?

Changing the color of your display or keyboard backlight is impossible to do programatically, unless the manufacturer designed it with that capability to change color and to do so using software controllers.

It is highly likely that this is not the case, as it is not common except in very specific circumstances (for instance, the backlight on my old Nokia phone's keypad could do this, and I have an external USB keyboard that has different colored backlight options, but cannot change them programatically). If you want to change the color of the backlight and this path is not already available to you, you will have to open the computer up and swap out the light(s) yourself.

Turn your Mac keyboard’s backlighting on or off

If your Mac notebook computer has a backlit keyboard, you can adjust the level of backlighting when you’re using your Mac in low light conditions or turn off backlighting.

Manually adjust keyboard backlighting or turn it off

Do one of the following, depending on your Mac model:

  • On the keyboard, press the increase brightness key or the decrease brightness key . To turn backlighting off, keep pressing the decrease brightness key.

  • In Control Center, click Keyboard Brightness, then drag the slider.

  • In the Touch Bar, expand the Control Strip, then tap the increase brightness button or the decrease brightness button . To turn backlighting off, touch and hold the decrease brightness button.

Automatically adjust backlighting in low light conditions

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Keyboard.

  2. Select “Adjust keyboard brightness in low light.”

Automatically turn backlighting off after a period of inactivity

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Keyboard.

  2. Select “Turn keyboard backlight off after [time period] of inactivity,” then choose a time from the pop-up menu.

Tip: The light sensor is located at the top of your computer near the camera; make sure that area isn’t covered when you use your Mac in low light conditions.

Question:Q:

I've seen a few videos on youtube and around the net that show people changing the backlight of their keyboardhowever I cannot find the videos anymore.

Has anyone done this or can they point me to a web site that demonstrates this?

im sorry i should have clarified a little more

I know what iSpazz is

But im talking about changing the actual color of the backlightI know it involves taking off the keyboard and just putting a colored "gel" paper on top of the lights like the one that is already in there but i was just wondering if someone had a video tutorial or something

This is a very foolish idea. By doing it, you will invalidate your new MBP's warranty and quite likely damage the computer at the same time. You should forget the whole notion immediately.

The only way to change the color would be to swap each LED's for a different color, putting a gel/film over them would just impact air flow and cooling and is not advisable.

I've known photographers that replaced the white LEDs with red, which allowed them to use the keyboard in a darkroom.

Mightn't the light from the display undermine the usefulness of red keyboard backlighting in a darkroom?

Actually I would think the display would be the primary problem. While the backlit keys are nice and easy to see they don't actually radiate much light. Unless you were to maybe lay a negative right on top of the keys, I doubt the white backlit keys would be a problem. I think with the older MacBook Pros there was some light bleeding around the keys (although still very minimal) but with the newer chicklet keys, light bleeding is nearly non-existent.

It would be easy to tape a red rectangular safelight filter over the display and tone down the brightness enough to avoid fogging photo paper, as long as the notebook was going to be kept open and stationary. Of course you couldn't expect to view colors on the display under those circumstances — I presume one would only do this for the purpose of recording processing information in a spreadsheet or similar monochrome application. You probably couldn't filter and tone down the display well enough to use it in the presence of unprocessed film, which is more light-sensitive than paper.

Probably best to use an old fashioned legal pad with a pen or a pencil in the darkroom, IMO.

The photographers turned off the display.

Well, I guess if you really wanted to undermine the usefulness of the keyboard, using it without a display would be a good start.

Also during my darkroom days, I remember it was not always dark. (just during film processing and enlarging). Plenty of time to take notes in the "light of day".
