SYNOPSIS. Weak high pressure will shift to our south and east today. Low pressure will strengthen across the Ohio Valley tonight and move into southeastern Canada Saturday. An associated strong cold front will sweep across our region Saturday afternoon and early Saturday evening. High pressure will build toward our area late Sunday and Monday, then remain in place through Wednesday. A cold front should arrive later Thursday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. Surface high pressure along the East Coast, with the center of the high based over western Virginia and western North Carolina, will slide east to just off the Atlantic Seaboard, then continue to slide offshore tonight. Meanwhile, strong mid-level ridging will slide east later today, then off the coast tonight.

With mainly clear skies, light winds, and lingering surface moisture, some patchy, shallow ground fog will develop across the region through daybreak this morning. Any fog that develops should not be dense, and will burn off fairly quickly after sunrise.

With abundant sunshine andunderway today, temperatures will be around 15 degrees above normal. Surface dew points will start out in the 50s, and will creep up into the lower 60s this morning. With a developing southwest flow, there may be some mixing that will keep dew points in the low 60s, as opposed to the mid 60s. High temperatures today at a few climate sites may approach records, but most records should be safe.

The mid-level ridge will be along the east coast, but some shortwave energy will ride along the ridge this afternoon. That may be enough to kick off a few late day showers and thunderstorms in parts of the southern Poconos and Lehigh Valley. SBvalues will be minimal, generally up to 500 or so J/kg, and 0-6 km Bulk Shear will be around 30 kt. PoPs will be capped at slight chance, so a washout is not expected.

The mid-level ridge continues to track offshore tonight, and some more shortwave energy approaches from the west. Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible tonight, mainly across the northern zones.

A warm and humid night on tap with low temperatures in the low 60s and surface dew points in the upper 50s to low 60s.

SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/. Summary . A strong cold front blasts across our region Saturday afternoon and early evening, with very warm and humid conditions rapidly transitioning to much cooler/drier and breezy conditions. Gusty showers/thunder possible with the strong cold front.

An upper-level trough shifts eastward across the Great Lakes, adjacent Canada and the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions Saturday into Sunday. The northern portion of the trough should take on a negative tilt as it lifts across New England and adjacent Canada. Surface low pressure will track well to our west and north later Saturday, with an associated cold front blasting across our area Saturday afternoon and early evening. There continues to be a strong wind field forecast to accompany this, and therefore strong shear will be in place. Strong convergence with the cold front along with a tight thermal gradient along and behind it will drive strong frontal forcing. Much of the guidance is advertising that much of the convection occurs along and just behind the surface cold front.

Model forecast soundings continue to show weak instability, and therefore a high shear/lowsetup. This tends to be more of a narrow low-topped convective line scenario with the front (this includes little or no lightning), given a deep southwesterly unidirectional flow in the warm sector. Convection allowing models (CAMs) are in good agreement depicting a narrow convective line quickly moving eastward across our area. The strongest portion of the line may be across about the northern half of our area given the closer proximity to the negative tilt trough. Given the flow just above the surface combined with strong cold air advection occurring immediately behind the surface front/convective line, some local strong to perhaps damaging wind gusts could mix down to the surface. Themaintains a Marginal Risk (level 1 out of 5) for much of our area. Ahead of the cold front and within the warm sector, southwesterly surface winds will turn gusty with decent boundary layer mixing especially across the coastal plain. There will be an abrupt wind shift to the west-northwest with the line/cold front, and temperatures will also rapidly drop.

The overall timing looks to be about 2 PM to 8 PM from west to east. Given the guidance continuing to show strong forcing, will maintain a period of likely to categorical PoPs mainly in the afternoon and early evening. Blended in the CAM guidance to fine tune the timing. Following the cold front, strong cold/dry air advections will usher in much cooler and drier air Saturday night with perhaps some clouds lingering especially across the northwestern areas.

For Sunday, the presence of an upper-level trough and associated cyclonic flow will result in a much cooler airmass to be in place. There will be a gusty northwest wind (gusts up to 35 mph) given cold air advection, a tightened pressure gradient and favorable vertical mixing during the daylight hours. Given the cold air aloft, cyclonic flow, enough moisture and the look of the model forecast soundings, there very well could be a decent amount of stratocumulus around Sunday for at least portions of the area. Some guidance indicates a few light showers or sprinkles possible especially in the afternoon across mostly the northwestern zones. The gusty winds should subside some at night given reduced vertical mixing.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. Summary . Cool air with gusty winds continue Monday, then less wind and gradual warming Tuesday and especially Wednesday and Thursday.

Synoptic Overview . An upper-level trough will gradually lift away from our area during the early week period with surface high pressure building in, then another upper-level trough approaches late in the week.

For Monday . A large upper-level trough across eastern Canada and the Northeast will maintain cyclonic flow across our area. At the surface, high pressure will gradually build toward our area from the southwest. A tightened pressure gradient remains across our region, and decent vertical mixing gets going during the daytime heating cycle. Despite weaker cold air advection, a notable breeze will continue during the day before diminishing in the evening with much reduced mixing and high pressure edging closer.

For Tuesday and Wednesday . The influence of the upper-level trough gradually starts to lift to our east and northeast during this time frame, although one last strong short wave may amplify the trough briefly across New England Tuesday night. Surface high pressure gradually builds more into our area, although the presence of the trough axis Tuesday night into Wednesday may place a surface trough across our area. It appears that no appreciable forcing and moisture will be present, therefore no precipitation is expected. As heights rise in the wake of the upper-level trough, developing warm air advection will result in a milder airmass building back into the area especially for Wednesday.

For Thursday . An upper-level trough is forecast to slide eastward across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. As it then continues to shift eastward, an associated cold front looks to cross our area Thursday night. The timing details will likely adjust given this is several days out, therefore maintain low PoPs at this point.

AVIATION /08Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Early this morning (until 12Z) . Mainly, thoughorVSBY in patchy fog. Nearly calm winds. Moderate confidence.

Today . . A few late afternoon SHRA or a TSRA are possible at KRDG/KABE are possible. Light SW winds. High confidence overall. Low confidence on SHRA/TSRA.

Tonight . . A few SHRA/TSRA possible at KRDG/KABE. Light S winds. Overall, high confidence. Low confidence on SHRA/TSRA.

Outlook .

Saturday . A fairly brief period of subconditions probable as a narrow line of showers and some thunderstorms (little to no lightning may occur) moves through with a cold front, mainly in the afternoon and early evening. Southwesterly winds increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts 20-25 knots, turning sharply west-northwest around 10 knots early in the evening. Moderate confidence.

Sunday and Monday . . Northwesterly winds 10-20 knots with gusts up to 30 knots (winds diminish some each night). Moderate confidence.

Tuesday . . Westerly winds around 10 knots. Moderate confidence.

MARINE. Today through Tonight . Sub-Small Craft Advisory conditions. NW winds less than 10 kt, becoming south 10-15 kt this afternoon and tonight. Seas 2-3 feet.

Outlook .

Saturday and Sunday . Small Craft Advisory conditions with gusty southerly winds abruptly shifting to west-northwest early in the evening as a strong cold front moves through. The gusty winds continue through Sunday, however the advisory only goes through Saturday night for now. Gusts are anticipated to remain below gale force, however a narrow convective line early Saturday evening may be accompanied by briefly stronger winds.

Monday . Small Craft Advisory conditions due to a gusty west- northwest wind, with conditions improving at night.

Tuesday . The conditions are anticipated to be below Small Craft Advisory criteria as winds diminish some.
