RVCA

Not to be confused with Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.

RVCA is a Costa Mesa, California-based clothing company owned by Boardriders.[1]

Etymology[edit]

The logotype for RVCA portrays the letter A without a crossbar, resembling an uppercase lambda (Λ). The 'V' character is really a "U". Occasionally "RVCA" is written in a different script or appears in art where it is clear that the true name is 'Ruca'. The name resembles ρούχα (uppercase: ΡΟὙΧΑ), pronounced [ˈru xa] and translated into English it means 'Clothes'. The RVCA logo is based on the two chevrons, the V & the A, representing the brand's ethos "The Balance of Opposites" as stated by RVCA founder PM Tenore.[2]

History[edit]

RVCA was founded in 1999 by Pat Tenore and Conan Hayes, a professional surfer from Hawaii.[3][4][5]Billabong International Limited purchased RVCA in July 2010.[6] In 2018 Boardriders acquired Billabong International Limited, gaining the Billabong, Element, Von Zipper, RVCA and XCEL brands.[1]

Culture[edit]

RVCA is closely associated with skateboard, surf culture, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and MMA. The company sponsors a skateboard and surf team. They also sponsor prominent BJJ competitors and prominent MMA fighters. RVCA clothing is found in skateboard/surf shops and numerous other shops.

Because of its art focus, RVCA is also associated with the street graffiti subculture. RVCA is involved with various contemporary art galleries such as KNOWN Gallery.

RVCA Training Center[edit]

Because of its Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA focus, RVCA founder Pat Tenore (who holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) built a BJJ/MMA gym known as The RVCA Training Center. The training facility is located in Costa Mesa, California. The Head Coach is currently Jason Parillo.

The tire still rests by the wall, a subtle reminder of how far Mackenzie Dern has come.

On a late September day inside the RVCA Training Center in Costa Mesa, Dern ignores the tire and goes through her workout: conditioning, sparring, grappling.

The two-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championship gold medalist knows she will need all three when she takes on Marina Rodriguez in the main event at UFC Fight Night 194 on Saturday in Las Vegas.

But 14 months ago, when she moved from Arizona to Huntington Beach and began focusing on improving her striking with Jason Parillo at RVCA, it was just Dern and the tire. Boxing basics 101.

“That’s the one thing that my other coaches just kind of like … I didn’t understand why I was doing anything, you know? Just kind of left, right and you know, spinning back fist,” the seemingly always smiling Dern (11-1) said last week during a workout. “The first day I came here and (Parillo) put me on the tire and I’m not hitting anything, I’m just working on my base and it’s very simple, you know? Just like on the tire, not hitting the bag or anything.

“And I realized like the first week, just throwing punches and having my base, it was way easier you know coming in. He really knows what he’s talking about.”

Dern, 28, will need to be on point Saturday against fellow Brazilian Rodriguez, 34, who has amassed a 4-1-2 record in the UFC.

Rodriguez (14-1-2) is expected to have an advantage on the feet. She made it into the UFC with a TKO victory on Dana White’s Contender Series and has vanquished the one opponent – Amanda Ribas by TKO in January – to whom Dern has lost in her pro MMA career.

But on the mat, where Dern has earned four of her six UFC victories via first-round submissions, the edge is clear.

“I think it’s not a secret – take her to the ground. She’s a striker, I’m a grappler. But I’m prepared to go five rounds standing and fighting too,” Dern said. “But I want to fight again too. I think the less damage I can take, for all the scrapping, the brawls and striking, you can be a little more injured. Then just take it to the ground. Choke, armbar, maybe go to sleep, you know? No injuries and that’s good. So that’s the plan.”

Ten months ago, Dern hadn’t come close to mastering the art of striking, but she showed plenty to impress her renowned boxing coach.

At UFC 256 in Las Vegas, Dern returned to her corner at end of the second round, her nose bleeding profusely courtesy of a Virna Jandiroba knee. When she asked if her nose was broken, Parillo assured her it was just a cut.

Was it broken? Absolutely. Parillo brushed off the query and admired his fighter’s durability and toughness as she went out and won the third round on all three judges’ scorecards, which won her the fight 29-28 on all three cards.

“She went out and kicked (butt) that third round. She didn’t go in there and melt because she was concerned about her nose,” Parillo said. “That’s something that you can’t teach. That’s something that’s in her guts.”

Parillo says Dern has more guts than most of the guys training at RVCA, though the description is more southerly and graphic than that.

He watches Dern bring her 2-year-old daughter, Moa, with her to training as she balances fighting and parenting with her husband, Wesley Santos, who is a professional surfer.

And while Dern might be a black belt on the ground, the fight always starts on the feet and some of the women outrank her there.

“She has done everything that I’ve asked her to do. And I push her as far as she’s getting because she’s behind,” Parillo said. “She’s still green a little bit on her feet. And she’s tough. So she’s going to be coming into their world right now.”

Dern is coming off an armbar submission in April of Nina Nunes, just 12 seconds before the opening round ended. It was Nunes’ first fight since having her first child with UFC two-division champion Amanda Nunes. Likewise, Dern’s return fight – just four months after giving birth to Moa on June 9, 2019 – ended in defeat.

“I knew where her mindset was. Of course, I want to put the pressure on the fight and I wanted to win, but I had so much respect for her,” Dern said. “I know she’ll be back even better. I was thankful that we were able to share her first fight with another mom.”

The tapout of Nina Nunes gave Dern a strawweight division-best four submission victories. Her next finish by submission would give her the most of any woman in UFC history.
