The end of a boating era? Evinrude outboard motors will no longer be manufactured

The boating world received shocking and surprising news. One of the world's leaders in outboard motor manufacturing will no longer exist.

Evinrude motors parent company, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), announced last week that it would discontinue manufacturing of its Evinrude E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboard engines. Instead, the company will focus on growing its boat brands and developing technology and innovation of other marine products.

How big was this announcement? Consider that Ole Evinrude invented the first commercially viable outboard engine in 1907. The Evinrude name stepping out of the outboard business would be akin to Ford announcing it would no longer build automobiles.

The announcement came as a surprise to Evinrude's now jobless global workforce of 650, mostly located at its factory in Sturtevant, Wisc. Many of the employees were already on furlough and were told their positions were eliminated by recorded phone message, according to Scott Martin of Clewiston, a professional bass angler and 20-year Evinrude pro team angler.

"I was driving back from the coast Wednesday with my wife, had had a really good day including getting my first haircut and dining out for the first time in months, when I got this phone call," Martin said via his YouTube channel. "My stomach sank. I immediately thought of all the great, hard-working people and service technicians who worked for them. As I called a few of them, they had just heard when I did."

COVID-19 impact was listed as part of the decision.

“Our outboard engines business has been greatly impacted by COVID-19, obliging us to discontinue production of our outboard motors immediately," said José Boisjoli, president and CEO of BRP. "This business segment had already been facing some challenges and the impact from the current context has forced our hand. We will concentrate our efforts on new and innovative technologies and on the development of our boat companies, where we continue to see a lot of potential to transform the on-water experience for consumers."

Evinrude was a well-known name among the Treasure Coast boating community. Ralph Evinrude was the longtime husband of singer and philanthropist Frances Langford living in Jensen Beach from 1955 until his death in 1986. Evinrude was the president and CEO of Outboard Motor Corporation which manufactured outboards under the Johnson, OMC and Evinrude brand names.

A saltwater outboard engine test facility in Stuart next to the Roosevelt Bridge was named after Evinrude. As recently as 2017, Evinrude donated two E-TEC outboard engines to the Environmental Studies Center in Jensen Beach for its River Scout boat as part of TCPalm's Twelve Days of Christmas program. It was unclear Monday what was the status of the test facility in Stuart.

Better with Evinrude

David East, builder of Horizon 3000 catamaran powerboats in Fort Pierce, has always been a devoted Evinrude outboard engine customer. He said the entire marine industry was shocked by the sudden news.

"It caught everybody off guard," said East, who before returning to the boatbuilding sector, was the longtime editor of Florida Sportsman magazine's Best Boat series of magazines, boats and television programs. "The G2 had on issues mechanically or technologically. I rig my boats with Evinrude, Yamaha, Mercury or Daihatsu and my boat is better with an Evinrude. It performs better and has much better fuel efficiency."

East said he his customers began calling when they heard the news.

"My phone rang off the hook for three days straight," East said. "But people who had ordered boats which are still being built said they don't want any other engine. They want the Evinrudes."

East said despite how the company broke the news, there is plenty of customer loyalty, according to message boards like The Hull Truth and Facebook.

"There isn't the brand bashing you might expect there," East said. "Probably because they built a good product."

East said conversations he had Monday with BRP contacts alleviated some of his concerns. He said the company will have to stand behind warranties and parts for the next 12 years partly because their other product lines like Sea Doo, Ski Doo and Can-Am are cross-owned by loyal Evinrude outboard owners.

BRP announced it has entered into an agreement with longtime outboard engine competitor Mercury Marine which will support boat packages and continue to supply outboard engines to our boat brands, Alumacraft and Manitou. It will continue to supply customers and its dealer network service parts and will honor manufacturer limited warranties, plus offer select programs to manage inventory.

The consolidation also will close an Alumacraft operations plant in Arkadelphia, Ark. to one in St. Peter, Minnesota.

When Evinrude set out to revamp its V-6 E-TEC G2 150, its designers did way more than just tweak it.

When Evinrude’s E-TEC G2 150 HP direct-injected two-stroke debuted in 2016, it was an outlier in the marine industry. All other 150s were based on inline four-cylinder platforms; Evinrude’s was a V-6 with a large 2.7L block it shared with the 175 and 200 hp models. On the plus side, it had plenty of snap; six pistons, however, made it one of the heaviest at 496 pounds. But instead of going along with the I-4 crowd, Evinrude transformed its 150 into a three-cylinder motor with a 1.9L block.

Whacking three cylinders dropped the weight of the new E-TEC G2 150 by 99 pounds, to 397 pounds, making it the first 150 to weigh less than 400 pounds. It’s lighter than the next lightest 150 — a Mercury — by 60 pounds. This same engine platform is available as a 115 H.O. and a 140 hp version.

An inherent problem in a motor with an odd number of cylinders is vibration, so I was a little surprised when I started the new E-TEC G2 150 on a Stingray 212SC deckboat and didn’t notice it shaking more than any other four-cylinder 150 I’ve tested. Evinrude engineers tackled the problem using a two-pronged attack. First is a Focused Motor Mount, which uses four large rubber bushings to absorb vibration and keep it from reaching the boat. Next, counterweights are used on the crankshaft to dynamically balance it.

 

How Does it Run?

Shoving off the dock in a ripping current on the Cooper River in downtown Charleston, S.C., was an adventure thanks to the 25- to 30-mph wind coming off the nearby Atlantic. Once under the huge Ravenel Bridge, things smoothed out and we started our acceleration runs. Jamming the throttle, I felt the slightest hesitation — I’ve noted it on other E-TEC engines — before the 150 burst into action and put the near-22-footer on plane in 3 seconds. Midrange performance was very good, and the 212SC reached 30 mph in 6.2 seconds. Its top speed was an impressive 53 mph.

Evinrude transformed its 150 into a three-cylinder motor with a 1.9L block.

Does it have the same rip-snorting acceleration out of the hole and midrange guts as its V-6 predecessor? No, but it’s not far off. With so much wind, I was unable to get a reliable sound level reading, but the new 150 seemed comparable to four-strokes in noise output without exhibiting any unpleasant notes. The quintessential Evinrude sound during windup is still present, but for many fans that’s a plus. We never touched the trim button thanks to the automatic Trim Assist system.

 

How Many MPG?

The E-TEC G2 150 HP owes a lot of its outstanding performance to its two-stroke design, which has a power stroke on every revolution, unlike four-strokes, which have a power stroke on every other revolution. In addition, Evinrude’s direct-injection system sprays gas directly under high pressure into the combustion chamber rather than into the intake manifold, providing more precise control and doing something that will save owners money. Called Stratified Combustion, this process sprays tiny droplets of gas at the top of the cylinder, which allows the new 150 to burn less than half a gallon per hour at idle, according to Evinrude.

Evinrude designed a few differences between these new models and the V-6 G2 engines, the most noticeable one being side panels that are held in place by a dozen screws instead of being easily removable. But access to the items owners need to get to is easy thanks to a snap-off center panel that conceals the 1.9-gallon tank’s oil fill, jumpstart poles, the diagnostic connection for the internal computer and the freshwater flush connection.

The main difference between the new 150 HP and the 140 HP and 115 H.O. models is engine mapping, and Evinrude pushes the acceptable 10 percent limit for horsepower rating. The 115 H.O. and 140 HP can be fitted with an all-new drive-by-wire tiller handle that has the shift lever right on the arm, a trim button on the end and Troll Control, which allows operators to tweak the speed in 50 rpm increments. The 150 simply has too much prop torque to handle a tiller.

 

How Convenient

Like with two-stokes of old, owners still need to add oil, but unlike two-strokes of old, the oil isn’t premixed with gasoline and is instead routed through tubes to strategic locations to make sure all critical components, such as cylinder walls, are bathed in the proper amount of oil. The 1.9-gallon internal oil tank is good for about 60 hours of running, which might be an entire season for some owners. And because fresh oil is always cycling through the system and being burned during combustion, there’s no need to ever do an oil change. Here’s maybe the coolest feature: winterization takes just 90 seconds. Simply select the winterize function from the standard digital ICON display at the dash.

Even the gear oil on these motors is handled differently. The addition of an expansion tank helps keep the lower unit topped off and gives the gear lube room to expand rather than exit through a compromised seal in hot conditions. Another user-friendly feature is a locking pin that keeps the motor from wiggling when it’s on a trailer. And it tilts all the way up, so the lower unit can be completely clear of the water’s surface.

Instead of lots of wires, cables and hoses dangling off the engine, one rigging tube is attached to the mounting bracket, not the powerhead itself, so when the motor turns, the rigging tube doesn’t move, which reduces parts fatigue. Wheel resistance can be easily adjusted by the driver on the ICON display. These new engines come with a five-year engine/five-year corrosion warranty and can be customized with up to 400 color/graphic combinations.

What Really Killed Evinrude


At its essence, capitalism is unapologetically Darwinian. There are exceptions, of course, but most small and large businesses thrive or wither on their own merits. Success isn’t owed, much less guaranteed. You have to earn it.

Or perish.

Still, like many industry observers I was saddened to hear that Bombardier Recreational Products is scuttling its Evinrude E-Tec and E-Tec G2 outboard engine lines. Headquartered in Valcourt, Quebec, the company announced its decision last Wednesday in a press release.

The COVID-19 crisis was the final straw for the struggling brand, according José Boisjoli, the president and chief executive officer of BRP.

“This business segment had already been facing some challenges and the impact from the current context has forced our hand,” he said in the release.

With that announcement, more than 350 employees in Sturtevant, Wis., the home of the Evinrude production facility suddenly found themselves out of work. That the plant will be “repurposed for new projects to pursue our plan to provide consumers with an unparalleled experience on the water,” according to the release, offers zero immediate consolation to the newly unemployed. Another 300 employees around the world “will be impacted,” the release stated, which is a polite way of saying most, if not all, will need to find new jobs.

That doesn’t seem like a big number given that more than 40 million Americans are currently unemployed—unless you happen to be one of the former Evinrude employees joining them. Then it means the world. Then it becomes real and terrifying.

But the loss of the Evinrude line itself is equally unfortunate—it is a 118-year-old brand. And though it barely moved the needle in the high-performance marine market in recent years, Evinrude gave consumers another option. Even if you don’t exercise them, options are great to have. More important, options spur competition. And competition spurs innovation.

But there is much more to the story of the demise of Evinrude than COVID-19 economics. For decades, the brand struggled to find its footing with its two-stroke offerings, Meanwhile, Mercury Marine and Mercury Racing in Fond du Lac, Wis., were releasing game-changing four-stroke products, most recently a V-8 outboard line that has become the primary platform for new releases. Yamaha isn’t going anywhere, either, thanks to a stable of great four-stroke products and a massive loyal following of saltwater fishermen. (As for Seven Marine, which was purchased by Volvo Penta in 2017, who knows?)

To provide perspective far more credible and better-informed than my own, I reached out to Fred Kiekhaefer, the former president of Mercury Racing. If anyone knows the history of marine propulsion on the technical and economic sides, it is Kiekhaefer.

“I’m am sorry to hear Evinrude’s gone,” he said. “Back in the 1980s, my company machined gearcases for OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) and their big Evinrudes—that work kept my company alive during earlier, difficult times before we were acquired by Brunswick. Today, the dealers and employees are the ones who will suffer the Evinrude brand’s demise. Sadly, it is not of their doing. Rather, it is the ultimate result of choices made by OMC and BRP leadership, and our government regulators, going back a long way.

“When outboards became regulated for emissions, all brands in the marine propulsion world were challenged,” he continued. “Mercury, Johnson and Evinrude— in particular—struggled with the engineering and economics of compliance. Mercury moved to first OptiMax direct-injection two-strokes, then briefly Yamaha-sourced four-strokes. Next came Verado and finally the current generation of four-strokes. OMC committed to Ficht direct-injection, then to E-Tec—and both were two-strokes. OptiMax had issues. Ficht was a disaster.”

Kiekhaefer and his fellow decision-makers saw the future, and the future was four-stroke outboards.

“Internally at Mercury, I argued that only four-stroke technology could win with long-term emissions compliance,” he said. “Fortunately, Mercury pursued four-strokes and executed brilliantly. BRP stuck with two-strokes. That difference in choices is—in my opinion—what killed the Johnson brand a while back and hurt Evinrude irreparably today. COVID-19 is just the final nail.”
