A brush fire in Chatsworth, in the area of Jeffry Mark Court and Larwin Avenue, was attacked by fire crews Wednesday afternoon, officials said. At 6:30 p.m., officials announced the fire had been contained to 9 acres.
No structures were immediately threatened and the cause of the fire was under investigation, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

There were no road closures related to the fire Wednesday afternoon, but officials advised residents to avoid the area around Chatsworth Park South and the hills to the north due to heavy fire equipment traffic.
The LA County Fire Department assisted city firefighters in attacking the flames.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9 - GROUP EVENT - LIMEKILN PARK WITH SHEPHERD CHURCH GROUP & VCC
This is a group event to clean up an abandoned homeless site that has been there for probably two years so it is buried in leaves, dirt and weather... so not easy to clean up. VCC had started this clean up a few weeks ago and got 25+ bags of trash in a very short bperiod of time but we did not have time to move the debris across the dry river bed... and knew that we needed another clean up to complete the debris baggging and getting it all across the riverbed in order to haul it away.
Don Larson and I started very early getting organized for the vent. Cory, Paula and Sarah caem next with water and volunteers... 17 of them in total!
We started by creating a human chain across the riverbed and brought all the already bagged trash and debris across to the other side... once this was done, we proceeded to bag all the trash and bring all th elarge furniture, etc. together - sofa, lounge chair, wicker chair, shopping carts, bed frame, etc. - great teamwork by all bagging a huge area of scattered debris and a huge pile of caked debris filled with clothes, shoes, etc.
After about 2 hours, we had to drag all the bags and debris to a place where we created another human chain across the riverbed to move this across. What a great feat - so efficient and productive! Everyone did their part and it moved so perfectly ... where we piled up the bags and debris for future pick up.
The last thing to be brought acorss the riverbed was the sofa - which we decided was easier to just roll across - such a fun thing for the group to do - the rriverbed... because we were not concerned with it being usable at the other end. That made the final act today - playful and fun.

California Rainbow Girls Announce Fresno Chaffee Zoo as Annual Statewide Service Project
Did you know that over the past fourteen years California Rainbow Girls have earned and donated over $1,000,000 to their annual Grand Service Projects? This year California Rainbow has chosen the Fresno Chaffee Zoo as their yearly fundraising project. They will be supporting the new Asia exhibit as well as the rest of the zoo through animal enrichment. Since 2006, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo Wildlife Conservation Fund has worked with dozens of individuals and organizations to further research, expand conservation impact, share knowledge, and engage local communities. The zoo promotes the enrichment of animals meaning that the overall well-being of animals is increased as their natural behaviors and environments are promoted by zookeepers.
The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls is a nonprofit organization for girls between the ages of 8 and 20. Rainbow focuses on leadership, sisterhood, and service. Our order prepares the girls of today to be the leaders of tomorrow while building self-respect, confidence, poise, patriotism, fidelity, integrity, and character in a fun and safe environment. Each year California Rainbow Girls chooses a Grand Service Project. Members across the state serve and support this organization while they raise funds throughout the year.

Volunteers Cleaning Communities (VCC) Accomplishes Final Clean Up of Balboa / Devonshire area of the valley!
SATURDAY,OCTOBER 2 - GROUP EVENT - BALBOA & DEVONSHIRE AREA
This was the culmination of bringing back this area to the community - from an entire block of homeless encampment tents to a block with no encampments at all... so we decided to bring ti back to "life". We planted 6 Giant Bird of Paradise plants, put mulch in all the tree beds, pruned the suckers, swept the gutters, cleaned out the gutter of huge amounts of homeless trash that had made it into that area, bleached the sidewalk, picked up the final litter pieces and watered the trees to get them growing. Thank you to Sky Valley Volunteers - Wendi Gladstone and Bob Dagger - who came with their Water Truck to work with us in watering before and after the planiting - as well as hosed down the sidewalk after we bleached it.
While we were doing this another VCC team was working on the "eye sore" empty lot next to Burger King across the street and cleaning that up completely - 20 bags... furniture, wood, etc. that has been there for years... and just looking trashy! Thank you Cash, Debra, Ilene, Danny, Robert and Dwight for working hard (in the hot sun) at this site. It looks great! Thank you Mark for keeping them with water!
Thank you Steve, Don, Rachel (who was on her hand and knees digging into the gutter area), Jason, Cash and Dwight for helping with the planting, mulching, augering, digging, hauling and all that it took to make this street - Devonshire - beautiful again. Thank you Don for putting the final touches on the fire hydrant - painting it bright yellow - we at one time did not even know there was a hydrant there when the encampments commanded the street.
Job well done everyone... We started here about 4 months ago working with the residents of the encampment to remove trash and unwanted debris... and with communication and time, we were able to accomplish what you will see today.
Thank you Home Depot for providing the funds through our most recent grant to complete this important project for the community. You are such an amazing partner to VCC.

We are the Love Ambassadors musical duo and we were leaving to perform a concert in Chatsworth Park South, when we saw an enormous plume of smoke rising and numerous fire engines arriving. It was a highly tense afternoon until firefighters got it under control and extinguished it! LA Firefighters were fantastic and we thank them. They saved our neighborhood!

SANTA SUSANA PASS - FINAL CLEAN UP - FROM SIMI TO TOPANGA BLVD! MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 - GROUP EVENT - SANTA SUSANA PASS ROAD AREA
This was a great achievement that was mostly accomplished by David Weisberg and Robert Ferkle... with allot of help from Don Larson who hauled everything away to the Saitation yard. We wanted to contribute to the final clean up of the 8.4 mile trek (both sides) from Kirschner in Simi Valley to Topanga Canyon in Chatsworth - then down the Old Stanta Susana Pass Road as the final leg.
This was a mission for David to get this historical street cleaned because it has become a dumping site for furniture, building contractors, illegal cock fights (several bags full of rotting cock figthing carcuses) and just the person who thinks it is fine to illegally dump their stuff.
David started the project on September 3 and finished today. Robert and Patrick helped along with Don doing the pick ups and the VCC volunteers today. He collected over the clean up a total of...

All in all David believes that he collected a total of about 2,000 lbs of restarted litter gone from Santa Susana Pass Road
Daivd is an avid hiker and passionate about a litter-free environment. He climbs and hikes whenever he can - days off from working his Deli Cavaretti's on Sherman Way or spending time with his family or girlfriend. Once he gets a notion in his head - he never lets go until he accomplishes the task... like this clean up.
David says: ”I did this for both the West San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley to enjoy a nice clean drive or ride through the historic Santa Susana Pass Road, and to help heal the earth at the same time."
Today we collected a bike tire, sofa pillows, wood planks, a washing machine, wood shutters, large carboard peices and about 12+ bags of debris up the road and down Topanga Canyon Blvd behind the railing. David Weisberg, Cash, Dwight Wheeler and Danny worked this area - David of course kept working it after the others left - because he is obsessed!
Another team worked the 118 Topanga Canyon eastboound entrance area and got another 6+ bags - Steve Hirschberg, Matt Villacella and myself worked ithis.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE!
It doesn't take much to give our community a clean, beautiful visual - just a passion for getting rid of litter and the willingness to pitch in some time and effort. I thank all the volunteers who help make our environment / community a better place to live in.
