Set parental controls on PS4 consoles

Learn how to set up parental controls and limit your child’s use of games, apps, and features on your PlayStation®4 console.

Parental controls and spending limits work alongside family management and play time controls to help you manage your child’s activity on PS4 consoles and PlayStation™Network (PSN).

In order to set parental controls, you will need your own account for PlayStation Network and an account for each child. If you set up the child accounts, you will automatically be the family manager. If someone else sets up the child accounts, they can appoint you as a “guardian” to enable you to set parental controls and spending limits.

When setting parental controls, remember to adjust the system settings to prevent children from changing parental controls.

How to set parental controls for PS4 consoles

You can set parental controls from a web browser or on your PlayStation 4 console:

Web Browser

  1. Sign in to Account Management > Family Management.

  2. Select the child account you want to set restrictions for and select Edit to adjust each feature.

PS4 console: set parental controls
  1. On your PS4 console, go to Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management. You may need to re-enter your account password.

  2. Select the child account you want to set restrictions for and select a feature to adjust.

How to make an exception for game communication features

As the family manager, parent or guardian, you can make an exception and allow the use of in-game communication features for a specific game, even if Communication and User-Generated Content is set to Not Allowed. If your child tries to use the in-game communication features during a game, a screen appears. From here, your child can send a request for you to make an exception for the game.

You'll receive your child's request in an email. As the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian, visit the website specified in the email and sign in to your account. Select your child from the list of family members, and then select Allowed Games to view their request. You can also view your child's request from the website below.

PlayStation 4 console parental controls

Parental controls allow you to restrict child account access to network features, applications and devices:

PS4 parental controls
  • Set play time restrictions
Play time management gives family managers (and adult family members who are set as guardians) the ability to set limits on when, and for how long, each child can access PS4 consoles and PS5 consoles.

  • Set monthly spending limits
If you set a spending limit for a child account, we will let that child spend up to that amount each month on PlayStation Store. The funds are taken from the family manager’s wallet.

Please note, if you are a “guardian” but not the family manager, let the family manager know what you are doing. If you are family manager, be aware that anyone you appoint as guardian can change the spending limits you have created.

  • Restrict communication and user-generated content
You can prevent child accounts from communicating with other players via chat, messages and game invitations. This setting also restricts viewing content created by other players. You can block videos, images, and text created by other users.

Please note, child accounts can request an exception to use communication features in a specific game.

  • Set age rating levels for games, Blu-ray™ and DVD
Games and videos are rated by age level to help parents figure out whether the content is appropriate for their child. Learn about age ratings before you adjust this setting.

  • Restrict use of Internet Browser

  • Restrict use of PlayStation® VR
PlayStation® VR is not for use by children under 12 years.

  • Age Filtering for Online Content
You can limit access to online game features and PlayStation™Store content based on your child’s age*.

Restricting use of applications and devices

Using parental controls, you can restrict children from using the Internet browser and playing games or videos on discs that have a rating. Select a user from (Settings) > [Parental Controls/Family Management], and then choose restrictions you want to apply to that user.

Available restrictionsExplanation
Age Level for GamesYou can restrict access to game content based on your child’s age. For details, see “Age level for games”.

    The default setting is [Allowed].
  • DVD
    The default setting is [Allowed].
  • Country or Region
The default setting is [United States]. It’s usually not necessary to change this setting.

Use of Internet BrowserYou can restrict use of (Internet Browser) on your PS4™ system. The default setting is [Allowed].

You can also set restrictions for users other than family members who have never signed in to PlayStation™Network.

Age level for games

The combination of the parental control level you set for each child on your PS4™ system and the parental control level for the game limits what games can be played.
For example, if you want to restrict use of a game with a parental control level of “4”, set your PS4™ system's parental control level one number lower to “3”. Setting the parental control level on your PS4™ system to “3” prohibits users from playing any games with a level of “4” or higher.

Checking parental control levels of games

Games on discs are sold in packaging that is labeled with rating level information. For games you buy and download from PlayStation™Store, see the game’s detail page for rating level information. To understand how game rating levels correspond to parental control levels, see the table below.
To view the parental control level for a game on screen, select the game in the content area, press the OPTIONS button, and then select [Information]. When a game has age restrictions, the parental control level will appear in the [Parental Control] field.

Family Management

When you set up a family, you can add children and other players to your family. You can customize parental controls for each child.
Family members include the following.

  • Family Manager
When you create a family, you are the family manager. As the family manager, you can add and manage family members, and set parental controls. You must be an adult to create a family.
  • Parent/Guardian
As a parent or guardian, you can set parental controls. The family manager can appoint another adult family member as a parent or guardian.
  • Family Members
Any user added to a family is a family member.

Setting up your family

You can set up a new family or join a family that already exists.
Select (Settings) > [Parental Controls/Family Management] > [Family Management], and then follow the on-screen instructions to enter your sign-in information.

  • A user can be in only one family at a time.
  • Children are automatically added to the family of the adult who creates their user accounts. Children cannot be removed from the family they are added to, so be sure that the adult who creates a child’s user account intends to be the family manager.

Setting up a new family

Select [Set Up Now] or [Set Up Your Own Family], and then follow the on-screen instructions to add family members.
You can add members to your family in either of the following ways.

  • Send a family request to a player.
  • Create a new user.

Joining an existing family

You need a family request from the family manager to join an existing family. When you receive a family request, select the family you want to join from [Received Family Requests].

What the family manager can do

Select (Settings) > [Parental Controls/Family Management] > [Family Management], and then follow the on-screen instructions to enter your sign-in information.

Add Family Member

Appointing a parent/guardian

Select an adult family member that you want to appoint, and then select the checkbox for [Parent/Guardian].

Remove from Your Family

Removing a family member who is a parent or guardian also removes their ability to set parental controls. This setting is available only when an adult family member is selected.

Parental Controls

Besides the family manager, parents or guardians can also manage parental controls settings. This setting is available only when a child family member is selected. For details, see “About restrictions”.

Reset Password

Change the password your child uses to sign in to PlayStation™Network. This setting is available only when a child family member is selected.

Joining PlayStation Network

You can give permission to your child to access PlayStation™Network.
Even if you select [Allowed] at first, you can change this setting to [Not Allowed] before your child signs in to PlayStation™Network for the first time. This setting is available only when a child family member who has never signed in to PlayStation™Network is selected.

Delete User Profile

When you delete a user profile, data managed by that user on your PS4™ system such as saved data, screenshots, and video clips are also deleted. This setting is available only when a family member who has never signed in to PlayStation™Network is selected.

What family members can do

Select (Settings) > [Parental Controls/Family Management] > [Family Management], and then follow the on-screen instructions to enter your sign-in information.

Family Member Information

View a family member’s account information. If the family member has signed in to PlayStation™Network before, you can view information such as their sign-in ID.

How to TURN OFF Parental Controls On PS4 (Easy Method!)

Parental controls on PS4

How you can make PlayStation a safer place to play for the whole family.

Safer play for gamers of all ages

It’s easy for parents or guardians to ensure gaming is safer, more secure and fun for every family member, using the flexible parental controls on PS4, or via the web on your PC and smartphone.

Whether you have a brand-new PS4 or want to activate Parental Controls via the Family Management settings for an existing console, follow our step-by-step guide and get started in minutes.

What you can do with Parental Controls on PS4:

Set age restrictions for games, Blu-ray Discs and DVDs

Every child family member’s account can be set up to only allow age-appropriate content.

Manage how long child family members can play each day

Schedule daily Play Time sessions, set the duration that children can play or award extra time for gaming from your smartphone or web browser.

Disable chat, messaging and content sharing

Choose whether to allow your child to communicate with other players via PlayStation Network, share content or view content created by other players.

Restrict child access to the PS4 web browser

Be confident that children can’t view unsuitable websites and social media by disabling internet access for their account.

Set up multiple layers of passcode protection

Create a system restriction passcode to disable guest login and prevent changes to the parental control settings or account creation, and set up a log-in passcode so only you can access your account.

How Family Management and Parental Controls work

With an account for PSN, you can use our Family Management tools to assign roles to yourself, other adult family members and child family members under the age of 18, and make use of Parental Controls so everyone can enjoy using their PS4 with age appropriate games and content.

Family Manager

As the Family Manager, you have control over each child family member’s account. You can tailor their permissions individually, keep track of their PS4 usage and oversee play time, and set spending limits.

Guardian

Family Managers can also appoint Guardians – other trusted adult accounts who can control permissions for child family members’ accounts.

Family member

Child family members can have their permissions individually set depending on age, so they can access appropriate content and follow pre-arranged spending limits on PlayStation Store.

You can have up to seven accounts in your family, including yourself, and each family member’s settings and data are kept separate, so everyone has their own game progress and Trophy collection.

Stay in control from your phone, PC or PS4

All your Family Management tools and parental controls can be accessed via your PS4 console’s settings menu, from the web on PC or smartphone or via the PlayStation App.

Simply sign-in with your account for PSN, go to the Family Management dashboard and you can review what children in your family have permission to access and adjust your settings on-the-go.

How to Set Parental Controls on the PlayStation 4

Even though Sony released its latest and greatest PlayStation 5 game console in 2020, it remains hard to find in 2021 -- and it's pretty pricey. So for families looking to play the console's exclusive games and experience its virtual reality capabilities, the PS4 is still a top pick. But those cool features, as well as the device's capability to play movies, do multiplayer, and browse the internet also mean you may want to set some limits on what kids can do and how much time (and money) they can spend on the console. (Learn more about using parental controls.)

Fortunately, the PS4 includes parental controls. To enable them, you have to first create a Family account and designate yourself as the Family Manager. Then you create "sub" accounts (kids' accounts) under yours. You can set any of these controls on the console, in the browser, or in the PS4 app, which you can download from the app store. Here's a quick guide to setting key parental control features on the PS4.

Though it's free to set up a PlayStation  account, you'll need to put in your payment information so Sony can verify that you're an adult. Sony adds a charge of 50 cents, but credits that amount to your wallet.
