2000 video game
Sega GT, released in Japan as Sega GT: Homologation Special (セガGT ホモロゲーションスペシャル, Sega Jī Tī Homorogēshon Supesharu), is a sim racingvideo game co-developed by Wow Entertainment and TOSE, and published by Sega for their Dreamcast home console. The game was released in 2000. A Microsoft Windows version was published the following year—in Japan and North America by Sega, and in Europe by Empire Interactive.
Sega GT was intended by Sega to rival Sony's popular Gran Turismo racing series, which was driving the strong sales of the PlayStation console and raising interest in the Dreamcast's closest competitor, the yet-unreleased PlayStation 2.[1] While Sega GT was met with positive reception, sales were only modest, and the Dreamcast was given little traction against its competition. Despite this, Sega would continue the series on the Xbox with a sequel titled, Sega GT 2002 following the demise of the Dreamcast console.
Gameplay[edit]
In Sega GT's Championship Mode, the player competes in various races across 22 different tracks in an effort to gain licenses and win cups. Collected prize money can be used to buy additional cars and mechanical parts. The game also features a car creation mode where players can build a custom vehicle from scratch using acquired parts, or can modify any of their existing vehicles.[2]
The game features over 130 selectable cars from manufacturers such as Dodge, Ford, Toyota, and Mitsubishi, with the handling of each being based on the specifications of its real-life counterpart.[3] The European version of Sega GT would include additional cars from Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and others.

Reception
The Dreamcast version of Sega GT received "favorable" reviews according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.[4] Critics praised said console version's generous content and customization options, but found that the controls could sometimes be difficult.[1][2] Frank O'Connor of NextGen said in the May 2000 issue that reviewing the Japanese import "seems to come down to making comparisons with Gran Turismo, and that's unfortunate, because on its own merits, Sega GT Homologation Special is stunning."[16] Seven issues later, Jeff Lundrigan said of the North American version, "If you only buy one racing game for Dreamcast, make it this one. In fact, run out and buy it anyway, just on principle."[17] In Japan, Famitsu gave said console version a score of 33 out of 40.[9]

Segas not really known for racing simulators. Sure, their arcade driving titles read like a greatest-hits list Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Outrun, etc. but their one real attempt at a GT-style game (Sega GT on the Dreamcast) wasnt really anything special. Especially in a genre where Gran Turismo 3 sets the standard.
But now that Segas a third-party publisher, why not give it another go, right? And for the record, Sega GT 2002 is playing very well. Wow got the handling just right. The cars feel as heavy or light as they should be, and theres no way youll see things like a Honda Civic out-powering a Dodge Viper GTS/R down the straights. As for track variety? They range from tight, European-style town courses to wide-open country roads and more modern urban circuits. You even get to drag race too...oh joy.
And theres a really neat Chronicle mode. In it, you get to race through six different eras, starting out against the boxy cars of the 70s and winding up against the latest supercars like the Ford GT40.
What really sets Sega GT apart, however, is how many super-cool options it has, many of which the collector or gearhead in each of us will be very happy about. Besides purely cosmetic things like decorating your garage (see bottom sidebar), gamers will have to worry about wear and tear on their suspension, engine and even tires (yes, youll actually have to buy a new set once in a while). On top of that, you get to tinker with your car while in your garage, or even set up a private sale of an older car (the advantage being you get to sell at a higher price than what that scheister down at the car dealership would offer you).

This was a really good Gran Turismo clone and had many flaws but could not out-rival Gran Turismo 3. I thought it was much better than the original Sega GT on the Dreamcast in terms of controls, modes, race courses and car models.
The graphics looked really impressive for the car models and the race courses. The soundtrack is good but you can use a custom soundtrack which is also good. The sound in terms of the car engine is reused for every car which is really irritating. The controls are solid. The mode selection is diverse such as Replay Mode, Chronicle Mode, Time Attack, Vs Battle, Arcade Mode and Sega Gt 2002 Mode.
The Championship Mode is exactly like GT Mode in Gran Turismo but much shorter. There is the Official Races, Event Races, Car Shop, Garage, Parts, Used Parts and Save/Load.
There is 125 cars in the game and 12 race courses. This is really disappointing compared to Gran Turismo 2 and 3. It feels like you are playing the original Gran Turismo on the Xbox.
The Official Races lasts 5 rounds and has 18 races. The Ai and difficulty is impressive up until round 4 and the last license test where it becomes really difficult and then unfair when you have to do it again a second time to beat Championship mode.
I did like the various events for Event Races like Genre 70s-90s Races, Group B Rally Race, Drag Racing, Supercar Race, One Make Race and a Snow Mountain Race. Trying to unlock the Special Cars was a nightmare and I hated the stipulation for it.
The Garage was cool as you could look at the trophies you won and pictures you took of your car in a race. You could do test runs, view your car list, sell your car and change car parts.
The Parts shop was good and most of the parts weren't that expensive and you had to unlock more by playing through Official Races. It also helps if your car needs to be repaired or if parts need to be replaced.
The Shop was also great but most of the cars were really expensive and unobtainable unless you played Event Races and Official Race and got 1st place in the races.
The main flaws are reused engine sounds, poor number of cars and race courses, difficulty and AI spikes near the end of the first playthrough and then going into the second official race playthrough and in different events in event mode.

Sega GT, known as Sega GT: Homologation Special (セガGT ホモロゲーションスペシャル) in Japan, is a racing game developed by WOW Entertainment and published by Sega for the Sega Dreamcast and later Windows PCs. It is not to be confused with Sega Super GT, otherwise known as Scud Race.

Compared to most Sega racing games, Sega GT has an abornmally large selection of over 130 cars licensed from Japanese companies including Subaru, Honda, Daihatsu, Mazda, Toyota, Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan as well as Dodge and Ford. The PAL version adds even more, with European manufacturers Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Mercedes-Benz and Audi lending their products to the game. The game offers a mixture of production cars and models specifically designed for GT3 and GT2 races (and there are a few rally cars too), and localises some models for different regions (for example, in the United States, some high-end Toyota cars are given Lexus branding).

Game features[edit]
This is the only GT-style game that allows the player to select their opponents directly. Unlike the original game, there are no works cars to win anymore, even though old racing cars can still be won from races. Some prizes are "special prizes" that can only be won by doing a certain objective. The game makes use of a "damage meter" in lieu of rendered damage, but while it does not affect the handling, it will reduce the awarded prize money at the end of the race. When the player finishes the race with the car unscratched, the game will award a bonus cash prize. In turn, the player will either finish with more or less than the prize money advertised, depending on the meter. Unlike Gran Turismo, the license tests are merely timed laps, instead of separate tests focusing on specific elements of driving.
Game modes[edit]
Sega GT 2002: The players start with just $13,000 to buy a car, raising money to buy faster cars and becoming the Official Race champion.
Quick Battle: Racing a single race against a CPU or human opponent, or alternatively, watching a CPU race.
Chronicle Mode: The players can use classic cars from the 1960s and early 1970s, tune them up over time, and try to defeat newer cars.
Time Attack: The players can try and beat own fastest lap-time on any circuit in the game.
Replay Studio: Viewing and editing saved replays.
Online[edit]
Sega GT Online was released in Japan in 2003 and the US and Europe in 2004. It featured the addition of "over 40" new cars (now 165+) including Auto Union, Bugatti, and De Tomaso vehicles. Opel vehicles have been removed from this version, while some new tracks, new weather/time of day, new game modes such as "Gathering Mode" were added to arcade mode and "Special Time Triggered Events" for online. Unlike the regular version, it was rated T due to the unpredictable multiplayer interactions. Its cover features a Mazda RX-8.
