How to Swag a Pendant Light Without a Chain

We are currently in the market for a considerable number of light fixtures.  Every one in this house needs replaced, and it's dark so we need to add a few more.

With beam ceilings, that means swag lights only.  There is no attic to move junction boxes around in.

Did you know there are a fairly limited number of reasonably-priced swag lights that can handle more than a 40 watt bulb available on the market, and most of them are not mid-century modern?  I don't want a dining room chandelier in every room thankyouverymuch.

I loooooove the look of more clean-lined lighting fixtures.  I've been drooling over a few at West Elm and Crate and Barrel for a few months now.  Only problem is, I haven't been able to figure out how to get them to swag.  They have no chain, only a cord.  That won't work on a hook - it'll just slip and put too much tension on the line, besides looking ugly.

Recently we decided to take the plunge and figure out how to make it work, because we found a really awesome light for the hallway at West Elm for not too much money.  Great look, reasonable cost.  No chain.

Michael googled for a bit of inspiration and came upon this post.  Ironically enough, it's even the same light fixture!  He made a quick trip to Home Depot and had the loop assembled in about a minute.

How to Swag a Chandelier

By Robert Ferguson

Swag hooks are ideal for repositioning a chandelier.

When an electrical ceiling box is not in the right location for a new chandelier, it's cheaper to lengthen and swag the chain on the fixture than to have an electrician move the electrical box. Available in a wide range of styles and finishes, the hooks are capable of supporting the weight of small to medium sized chandeliers. The hooks are also available in a toggle-bolt version that is ideal for hanging the fixture's chain and power cord from drywall when a joist is not available.

Preparation

Measure the distance from the power source to the chandelier's proposed location using a tape measure. Add 2 to 3 feet to this measurement to compensate for slack. How much slack you need depends on how much you want the chain and cord to drape between the fixture and its swag hooks.

Purchase the appropriate length of chain and cord. Most home improvement centers sell chain and cord by the foot. Add 2 feet to the length of the power cord to allow for electrical connections.

Remove the original chain by separating the links that attach to the support ring on the chandelier and it's decorative cover plate using a pair of adjustable pliers and a screwdriver. Do not remove the electrical wires from the chandelier at this time.

Attach one end of the new chain to the chandelier. Use a screwdriver and a pair of adjustable pliers to separate and open the end link and hook it to the support ring. Use the tools to bend the link back into the closed position. Attach the other end of the chain to the decorative cover plate you removed in the previous step.

Attach the new power cord to the chandelier. The best method is to disassemble the chandelier and replace the old cord with the new one in the same fashion. This might include splicing the cord to a set of wires located internally with wire nuts, or attaching to set screws on the side of the lamp socket. It will depend on the type of chandelier.

Weave the new cord through the chain links and thread through the opening in the center of the decorative cover plate.

Installing Swags to Joists

Locate and mark the positions of the ceiling joists using a stud finder and pencil. The device will beep or light up when you run it over a stud.

Drill a pilot hole in the ceiling joist in the desired location of the light fixture using a power drill and the appropriately sized drill bit. The drill bit should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the threaded shank of the swag hook.

Secure the swag hook to the ceiling joist by placing its threaded shank in the pilot hole and turning clockwise until tight. If it is difficult to screw in the hook with your hand, remove and use a larger drill bit for the pilot hole. Most manufacturers recommend the size of the bit in the instructions included with the swag hook.

Installing Swags to Drywall

Mark the swag hook location on the ceiling using a pencil.

Punch a small hole through the drywall using a screwdriver.

Thread the toggle bolt onto the threaded shank of the swag hook.

Squeeze the toggle bolt together and insert it into the opening in the ceiling. Push the toggle bolt far enough into the ceiling until the reopens.

Tighten the swag hook with your hand until it is snug against the ceiling.

Installing the Chandelier

Turn off the circuit breaker located in the panel box that supplies the ceiling electrical box. Use a non-contact circuit tester to verify that the power is off. Ensure that the light switch is in the "off" position.

Hang the chandelier at the appropriate height by hooking the chain to the swag hook.

Connect the black switch leg, white neutral and green or bare copper ground wires from the chandelier to the black, white and ground wires in the ceiling electrical box by twisting their ends together and securing with wire nuts. The switch leg is the wire connected to the switch that powers the fixture when it is turned on.

Align the cover plate to the electrical box and secure with the appropriate mounting screws.

Tips

Warnings

  • Use extreme caution when working with electricity.
  • When using a toggle-style swag hook, ensure it is rated to support the weight of your chandelier.

How to install a swag hook

The lack of her half-open mouth seemed to me at that moment her feature, her own beauty. It was fun for me to look at this pretty whore, full of health and liveliness. I turned her back and drove my piston with all my might into the wet hole of this beast.

The rope did not stop tightening until Alena arched her back so that. Her breasts rose above the floor, her erect nipples became visible. As soon as the captive of her own husband arched, her captor fixed the rope with several strong knots and released her. There are only two things left, girl.

With that, he pulled out a small chain with clips at both ends and immediately attached them to the woman's nipples.
