I hate to start another oil thread…but I’m curious as to what you late model YZ250 owners are using in the gearbox. I picked up a used ’02 recently and the shifting seems slightly notchy…not bad, just a little bit sometimes between 1st and 2nd. I’ve hit neutral a few times going between 1st and 2nd when I’m not overly deliberate. I’ve only ridden the bike twice, so it may be my fault so far, I’m just not used to the throw of the Yamaha gear shift lever yet. But in the past, with a lot of my two-strokes, I’ve found many of them to be quite fussy when it comes to gearbox oil. I’ve tried lots of different oils in the gearboxes over the years and never had a problem with clutch slippage or anything like that in any of the oils I’ve tried…but some of them do reveal big differences in how the bikes shift.
I used PJ1 clutch saver in the YZ gearbox so far, only because that’s what I had on my garage shelf, a leftover bottle of it, and I plan to try something else on my next ride and experiment a bit, but I’m curious to hear what some of the rest of you are running in the Yamaha gearboxes and what kind of luck you’re having?
I’ve read a lot about guys using heavy-duty diesel motor oil in gearboxes, and even for four-stroke motor oil, but have never personally tried it.

Is it not part of the engine assembly? Im just busting your chops. Technically Josmoloco is correct. The oil that goes into the gear case is not engine oil. Well let me cut to the chase. If you dont have a manual get one. Preferably an OEM service manual. Though Haynes and Chiltons are good also. But the OEM manual will tell you exactly what type, how much, etc etc etc. When it comes to gear oil I have found that what ever the manufacture says to use is whats best. Because your riding a 2 stroke Id say for starters run what the manufacture says for premix oil. AND RUN THE PRE MIX RATIO THAT THE MANUAL STATES (yes I used caps on purpose as that is important information and you shouldnt deviate from it till you know what your doing). Jet the carb to what the manufacture says its supposed to be jetted to for your elevation that you ride and the day time temps. Doing all the things I just mentioned will help the bike perform the way its supposed to. That and give you a better experience while riding your bike. Oh one more thing I forgot to mention but your manual should cover it. Run 91 octane fuel or higher. But you dont have to run race fuel unless the bikes engine has been modified and requires it. But untill you get a manual, and even if you do have a manual, it doesnt hurt to ask a question here. There is a wealth of knowledge to be found here.

The first point to note, is that gearbox oil is generally only used in 2 stroke engines. Four stroke engine will normally only have one oil for both parts of the engine. i have a 2003 YZ250 and the cap. is NOT 750ml it IS 750cm3( is that the same? i suck at liquid conv.) or between .75L-.80L or 0.79-0.85 US qt. or a little bit less than a quart of oil (33.8 flo. oz. or 1.056 U.S. qt. 1liter) pull your drain plug, lean the bike from side to side and move it forward and backward put the drain plug back in pour your qt. of oil or tranny fluid in the fill hole and leave a "little" bit of fluid in the bottle ,start it up and let it warm up, then kill it and pull your check plug and it should only drip a little bit, OR you could just pour the whole qt. in, and the pull the check bolt out, and adjust it that way, i change my tranny oil about every 2 or 3 rides, but it also depends on the cond.'s
I use all of Maxima's stuff, i really like it, so i use the Maxima MTL 80W (10W-30), i have also used Spectro,i have heard all of the stories on the do's and don't's of using oil versus tranny fluid, and i have used both, but i settled on motorcyle 2-stroke specific tranny fluid because its "better to be safe than sorry"-lol, i will use a thicker tranny oil when i really put a strain on my YZ, like when i go to the dunes etc.
