Southwest Airlines cancels several flights at Norfolk International Airport

Travelers check in at the Southwest Airlines ticketing counter at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Oct. 11, in Baltimore, Maryland.

Norfolk International Airport, along with other airports across the country, is facing several flight delays and cancellations from Southwest Airlines.

The company has canceled thousands of flights over the past several days as the airline faces criticism from its pilots’ union over its vaccination policy.

The Associated Press reports that the widespread disruptions began shortly after the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, representing 9, pilots, asked a federal court on Friday to block the airline’s order that all employees get vaccinated.

The union argued that Southwest must negotiate because it could involve sick leave or disability if pilots have a reaction to the vaccine.

“We are not anti-vaccination at all, but our pilots are extremely worried about how their medicals are going to be handled” if they are unable to fly, union President Casey Murray told the AP. Murray said pilots had not staged a sick-out because of the vaccine mandate.

Monday’s cancellations amounted to 10% of Southwest’s schedule and at least 1, flights, or roughly 40%, were delayed, according to the flight-tracking service FlightAware.

Southwest’s cancellations dropped to 2% and around flights, or 12% of all flights, were delayed as of noon today. Those numbers continue to grow, however.

In Norfolk, a total of eight Southwest flights have been canceled.

Above are Southwest Airlines (WN) cancellations at Norfolk International Airport (ORF) the past few days, according to ORF's Director of Market Development Charlie Braden.

Charles Braden, director of market development at Norfolk International said, the cancellations haven’t had a major impact.

Norfolk International Airport is serviced by seven airlines, averaging inbound and outbound flights during the past five days, he said.

The White House has pushed airlines to adopt vaccine mandates because they are federal contractors — they get paid by the Department of Defense to operate flights, including those that carried Afghanistan refugees to the U.S. this summer.

United Airlines was the first major U.S. carrier to announce a vaccination requirement. Southwest had remained silent even after President Joe Biden announced his order for federal contractors and large employers. Last week, Southwest told employees they must be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8 to keep their jobs. Workers can ask to skip the shots for medical or religious reasons.

Norfolk to be hit by weekend bus cancellations due to driver shortage

Norfolk is set to be hit by a series of temporary bus cancellations this weekend due to a national shortage of drivers.

The cancellations, which affect First bus services in the city, have been made after the company said it was in the "unfortunate position" that it did not have enough drivers to serve all of its routes.

First said it made the decision on which routes to suspend based on passenger data.

On Saturday (September 25) some of the services on the Pink Line 11/12, Turquoise Line 13, Green Line 14, Orange Line 21/22, Red Line 23/23A/24, Yellow Line 29/X29, Purple Line 36 and 39, and Excel D, will be cancelled.

So far the bus company has not indicated there will be any further cancellations on Sunday.
