Overview of the TITAN power tower bench

 

The power tower bench is a variation of the multiple power towers that TITAN has in their line up. This version will also make it possible to do bench press motions and flyes while lying down. Combined with a pair of dumbbells it takes care of many of the shortfalls of a regular power tower as the bench gives you access to a wider arrange of exercises to get to your goals. The downside is that this power tower will eat up more space because of its T shape than a regular power tower. The full specifications of the TITAN power tower bench are:

The biggest advantage of this product is that you get a bench including a power tower. With many vendors in the market you would be ard pressed to even get a bench for this prize. Never mind an entire exercise station that can function as a gym in your home. For what it does the TITAN power tower bench is great value for money.

  • Space requirements

The hooks for racking can be become a real health hazard. They are not optimized for racking a heavy barbell including weights. The cups have a small metal disc in front to keep the barbell in place. This can easily turn into a finger cutter if you have the pressure of a heavy barbell and a metal disc with some fingers sandwiched between them.

 

The whole station also has a pretty low weight for hanging yourself from it. If you do not attach it to the ground or to the wall it is likely that you will topple it. Especially if you like to go apeshit when you are training. It is not a good idea to get the cheapest possible equipment and than put the maximum amount of stress on it except you want to break things and humans.

 

This TITAN power tower bench will roughly take up the same amount of space as a small power rack. As you can not put this outside in the rain based on the bench pad you might want to reconsider and save up a little longer to fill your home gym space with something proper.

 

In addition to all of this you always have to take the TITAN finish into account. TITAN is know for parts that won't fit or completely missing parts. If the bones of the product are already flimsy and you combine this with lax quality controls you get recipe that won't necessarily make you happy. It does not mean that you can not train with TITAN equipment, it just will not more caution and DIY to make it work compared to other vendors like Rogue and Eleiko.

The TITAN outdoor power tower is built a little sturdier than the TITAN power tower bench. It has also has been stripped off any parts that do not do well in the rain. In addition the tubing is a bit thicker as with the power tower bench and an extra coating has been apllied. If you want to invest a little more and train outdoors this is the safer and better choice than the power tower bench. The only downside is that you will not get a bench with your purchase.

 

The TITAN rack combo plays in a different league than the power tower, but you still get a bench and other options to train. Rack combos are aimed at powerlifting meets and are easy to assemble and transport.  With the TITAN rack combo you save some money compared to the competition and do not take your fingers off when you are bench pressing. In return it can not be used for pull ups or dips.

 

The Rogue jammer bar is a great indoor pull up bar to put above your kitchen door. Whenever you walk through, you do as many pull ups as you can muster. Keeps the entire family fit, is safe and does not take up a lot of space. Nothing to not like about this product. Except the price as it costs the same as the TITAN power tower bench.

If you use the TITAN power tower bench together with some light dumbbells and do not play tarzan while hangin from it it is a good budget option to keep generally fit. Still, I am not a huge fan as the production is cheap, it takes up quite a bit of space and does none of the things it claims really well.

The Rogue lat pull machine is the current gold standard in the industry  for a lat pull down. There are many variations on this machine and the one from Rogue is one of the most overbuilt you can find. As it also doubles up as a rowing machine it can address your needs to build a bigger back.

so let’s dive in, and understand what an observable is, then we’ll move onto observables and operators.

what is an observable?

an observable is just a function with a few special characteristics. it implements the observer design pattern.

an observable sets up an observer (we’ll learn more about this) and connects it to the “thing” we want to get values from. this “thing” is called a producer and is a source of values - perhaps from a or event in the dom (or even be something more complex such as async logic).

to better understand observables, we’re going to write our own! but first, let’s take a look at an example with a subscription to grasp the bigger picture:

this example takes an element and passes it into , which returns us an observable of our input’s object when the event name we specified emits (which is why we’re using in the console).

when the input’s event listener fires, the observable passes the value to the observer.

what is an observer?

an observer is quite simple, in the above example the observer is the object literal we pass into our (subscribe will invoke our observable).

is also valid syntax, but we’ll be exploring the object literal form in this post

when an observable produces values, it then informs the observer, calling when a new value was successfully captured and when an error occurs.

when we subscribe to an observable, it will keep passing any values to an observer until one of two things happens. either the producer says there are no more values to be sent, in which case it will call on our observer, or we (as the “consumers”) decide we are no longer interested in the values and we unsubscribe.

when we want to compose the values returned from an observable, before they reach our final block, the value is passed (or can be passed) through a chain of observables, which is typically done via “operators”. this chain is what we call an observable sequence. each operator returns a new observable to continue our sequence - also known as a “stream”.

what is an operator?

as we’ve mentioned, observables can be chained, which means we can do something like this:

here are the steps of this sequence:

  • let’s assume the user types the letter “a” into our input
  • the observable then reacts to this event, passing the value to the next observer
  • the value “a” is passed to , which is subscribing to our initial observable
  • returns a new observable of and calls on it’s observer
  • the call will invoke , which is subscribing to , with the resulting value of the call
  • will then return another observable with the filtered results, calling with the value if the is 2 or above
  • we get the final value through our block

quite a lot happening, and if you’re a little unsure, remember:

each time a new observable is returned, a new observer is hooked up to the previous observable, thus allowing us to pass values along a “stream” of observers that simply do something you’ve asked and call when it’s done, passing it to the next observer.

in short, an operator typically returns a new observable each time - allowing us to continue our stream. as users we don’t need to worry about all the observables and observers which are created and used behind scenes, we only use one per chain - our subscription.

building our own observable

so, let’s get started and write our own observable implementation. it won’t be as advanced as rx’s implementation, but we’ll hopefully build the picture enough.

before we dive into our real world example, let’s give a basic one.

as we’ve setup our observable function, we can now invoke our observer, passing in as a value and subscribe to it:

we subscribe to the observable instance, and pass our observer (object literal) into the constructor (which is then assigned to ).

that’s all we actually needed to create the basis of our observable, the next piece we need is a method on the observable:

this then passes our function to our in the constructor. next up, we need to hook our event in:

so, what’s this argument, and where does it come from?

the is actually your object literal with , and on.

here is the interesting piece. the is never passed through until is invoked. this means the is never “setup” by our observable until it’s subscribed to.

once subscribe is invoked, inside the observable’s constructor the is then called, which invokes the callback we passed to and also passes through our observer literal. this then allows the observable to do it’s thing and once it’s done, it’ll on our observer with the updated value.

okay so what now? we’ve got an event listener setup, but nothing is calling , let’s fix that:

as we know, observables need a “tear down” function which is called when the observable is destroyed, in our case we’ll remove the event:

we’ve not called because this observable is dealing with dom apis and events, so technically they’re infinitely available.

let’s try it out! here’s the full code of what we’ve done:

building our own operator

building our own operator should be a little easier now we understand the concepts behind an observable and observer. on our object, we’ll add a new prototype method:

this method will be used as such, pretty much like in javascript but for any value:

so we need to take the callback function and invoke it, which in turn will return our desired data. before we can do this, we need the latest value in the stream.

here comes the clever part, we need to gain access to the instance of the observable that invoked our operator. because it’s on the prototype we can do exactly that:

ready for more funk? now we subscribe inside a returned observable:

we are returning the because when we unsubscribe, the unsubscriptions (is that a word?) will flow up the chain, unsubscribing from each observable.

this subscription will allow us to be passed the previous value from our , because it returns a new observable with a property in the constructor, we can simply subscribe to any updates it makes! let’s finish this off by invoking our passed through map:

now we can chain it!

notice how the final block is passed only the and not the object like before? you’ve successfully created an observable stream.

  1. Just got mine in and assembled - easy to put together.

    What you'd expect from Titan - showed up with the boxes beat to ****, little nicks and scratches across the pieces.

    The foot plate is wobbly and there is a little bit of wiggling from the frame. This is a carbon copy of the elitefts Scholastic Chest Supported Row, and you can tell - it works well, but just isn't quite as sturdy. I imagine the steel is thinner gauge and it's bolt together in lieu of welded.

    Overall, I love the chest supported row as a movement, and am happy to have paid less than a third of the price of an elite unit, shipped. It's not built quite as tough but will be more than good enough for my garage.

Even though I am a fan of prone row machines myself they are still one trick ponys. You can not do a lot else on them except from the prone rows that they are designed. As this is a full bench with some storage for a barbell it comes in a solid T Shape and is therefore also not the best in terms of space requirements.

The TITAN T bar row machine is an alternative to the prone row machine. This machine only needs additional Olympic plates to function. It is easier to load and unload and also offers some more grip variations. The only downsides are the higher price and that your back is less protected.

 

The Titan plate loaded seated row is a classic machine that you will find in many gyms in countless variations. With this machine you will sit upright and row the weight attached on lever arms in front of you. This is a good machine for the general public to use as the position you row from is more comfortable. The disadvantage is that you will not be working with a barbell.

 

The TITAN chest supported row gives you the opportunity to row a barbell in various angles while your chest is being supported. With this you can go very heavy on barbell rows without having too worry too much about blowing your back out. This machine is slightly pricier than the prone row machine.

The TITAN prone row machine is a great addition to your gym to work on your back and often overlooked. While seated row is more popular as it is more convenient I personally think that the prone row will get you the better results.

The chest supported adjustable row bench is great for athletes who develop a massive row and are concerned about their back. With this machine you get the extra support and also do not need to move the barbell from the ground into position.
