Abyss league challenge guide

Abyss league challenge guide DEFAULT

The Abyss League has added a new type of belts and jewels to the game, as well as two new bosses &#; Abyssal Liches. And although it is difficult to call it one of the most interesting leagues, nevertheless it remained in the core and it will be useful for new players to know what its features are.

As you might guess, players may encounter Abysses in the zones &#; they are marked on the minimap with a special green icon. To start an event, you just need to get close to it. A rift will appear in this place, which will randomly follow to the pit, which will appear as soon as he reaches it. At this time, abyss monsters will attack you from the rift, so be ready to fight them off.

Path of Exile Abysses

There can be several such pits, and if you have killed a sufficient number of monsters that attacked you, then in the last pit there will be a reward &#; Abyssal Trove. This is a special loot chest that always contains abyssal jewels. In high-level zones, instead of Trove, you can wait for Abyssal Depths &#; a portal in the side area.

Path of Exile Abyssal Trove

These are narrow corridors in which enemies and valuable loot will be waiting for you, as well as a boss at the end. Most often it is the Stygian Spire, a totem that summons enemies from the abyss. And as a reward for killing him, you will receive a special belt &#; Stygian Vise. But you may be lucky, and then you will meet one of the Abyssal Liches, the fight with which will not be easy, but one of the league-specific uniques is guaranteed to fall from him.

Valuable loot

Abyss Jewels

This is a special class of jewels, which can be socketed in the jewel socket in the passive skill tree, or in a special Abyssal Sockets. These sockets are found on new belts as well as new uniques, which are described below.

Path of Exile Abyss Jewels

There are 4 types of Abyss Jewels:

  • Ghastly Eye Jewel (mostly for summoners),
  • Hypnotic Eye Jewel (for casters),
  • Murderous Eye Jewel (for melee builds),
  • Searching Eye Jewel (for ranged builds).

Stygian Vise

A new type of belts that have a unique implicit modifier &#;Has 1 Abyssal Socket&#;. Only Abyss Jewels can be inserted into this socket, but a well-worn belt and jewel add up to some of the best rare belts in the game. There is also a unique Stygian Vise belt, Darkness Enthroned, which has 2 sockets and a 75% increased effect of socketed jewels.

A few specific unique items were added, only 4 pieces (most of them have 2 options &#; with one or two Abyssal Sockets): Tombfist gloves, Lightpoacher helmet, Bubonic Trail boots and body armour Shroud of the Lightless. Even though they only drop with Abyssal Liches, only versions with two Abyssal Sockets are valued.

Challenges are side objectives available in challenge leagues. Unlike achievements, they are tied to a specific league and cannot progress once that league ends. Players who complete challenges receive a symbol beside their username, indicating the number of challenges completed. This symbol is visible both in-game and the official Path of Exile website. However, it will disappear when the next league begins.

Most leagues grant rewards for completing challenges, typically in the form of special microtransactions, such as Challenger Trophy.

David Allen December 3, Gaming, Guide

Path of Exile is on its way to becoming the most successful ARPG in the industry, especially with success of the “Fall of Oriath” expansion paired with the Xbox console and China market releases. PoE is growing by leaps and bounds, and both veteran and new players alike are trying to decide which build to run as their new league starters for the upcoming “War for the Atlas” version launch with the “Abyss” challenge league on December 8th, 7. War for the Atlas features 10 new skill gems (Such as Volley, Volatile Dead, and Bodyswap), 32 new maps, numerous new uniques, a rework to damage reflection (yes!), and a number of yet unannounced changes and fixes.

Each of the below 15 recommended builds should easily take both new and veteran players to end-game in the upcoming release and the Abyss challenge league. Before we begin, Path of Building is a very important tool to have when planning and testing builds before they’re played in-game. Additionally, make sure you have NeverSink’s Loot Filter installed.

The requirements for a solid starting Abyss league/ release build are:
- 1) The ability to grow with minimal gear requirements.
- 2) Balanced leveling, clearing speed and boss killing with good survival.
- 3) Entry to and good performance in end-game map farming for items and currency.

Even though some of the builds covered below are shaper capable, I do not qualify the need to do Uber Izaro, Atziri, or Guardians as a “requirement”. Getting to maps and farming while surviving is key.

For many players, play style is important. Some people hate totems while others only play totem builds. Some like Melee while others love bow builds. The diversity of PoE is one of its greatest features, but also one of the most complex aspects of the game. This guide keeps things fairly simple. There are other more powerful starting builds that are more complex (and sometimes powerful), but they generally require respecing, farming specific items/uniques/item rolls, and other factors — but the reality is most of these builds don’t provide enough of an advantage to the core requirements to outperform the below recommendations.

- 1) There’s a reason Sunder nearly almost always dominates league and race ladders. It’s the go-to skill for leveling quickly, is fairly easy to gear for, and does very well at end-game. It’s also fun for those who like to play a melee build vs. ranged/spell/totem. Once you get multistrike with a great weapon, Sunder is a blast. A Sunder build can also transition into other melee builds as well, which makes it easier to respec.

- 2) Essence Drain is beginner and veteran friendly, and it’s even better in and due to the Contagion AoE buff. The starting version of ED can easily begin mapping with minimal equipment requirements (just a 4L works fine), it’s very good at boss killing, and has excellent survivability. It can also have top tier clear speed if played right. There are generally two variations, the Trickster MoM (Mind Over Matter) build (above), and the Occultist ED build. Trickster generally does more damage, but doesn’t have the survivability of Occultist. Both are great variations of the best DoT skill in the game.

- 3) Raise Spectre builds have become very popular with the recent changes to the skill. Great survivability, high damage, and a playstyle that’s more relaxed than other builds because the monsters target your little buddies more often than you. It’s also a favorite among SSF players since it scales well and is good at farming, even with limited gear.

- 4) Ancestral Warchief is another oldie but goodie top choice. It’s powerful, easy to scale (just craft 2H axes), has great survivability (swap out Concentrated Effect for AoE when doing Izaro, etc), is one of the best lab runners in the game, and is fun. When you find or craft a high DPS 2H axe, it’s simply magical. It is also Shaper viable. The downside? It doesn’t clear as quickly as other builds. The most powerful version of the build is the Facebreaker version, but that’s a choice to pursue after a “first build”.

- 5) Dark Pact made its debut with the release of , and has become a very powerful map clearing build. With great AoE and damage, DP builds have become so common that they quickly make it to the top of the non-HC leaderboards; but because they can be squishy, self-cast DP is rarely seen in HC ladders.

- 6) Dark Pact Totems have also become one of the most powerful totem builds in the game. Great for clearing and bossing, they are very well-balanced and have great survivablity; numerous DP totem

- 7) You can’t go wrong with a 2H RT (Resolute Technique) Cyclone build, especially with the recent fix to the Cyclone skill (now ensuring players don’t get stuck on objects). Cyclone builds are tanky, fun to play, and awesome with the right items that enhance blood and gore. Plus it’s nice to not have to worry about getting stunned. For those of you who are interested in an alternative to the RT Cyclone “norm” you can also try the Electro Cyclone, which is also a great build that has more than 1M DPS with the proper gear.

- 8) Freezing Pulse Totems are awesome; a crit-based cold build that has great survivability and can shatter every enemy on the entire screen in just a second or two. They also do a reasonable job against bosses. This build is one of the best map farming builds out there and can take a character to level If you want to see FP Totems in action, check out this video.

- 9) Summon Raging Spirit (SRS) is one of the best starting builds that also scales well, and the rogue nature of your little skulls flying off screen like homing missiles and killing whatever they find is always enjoyable. Plus this skill can start to be used at the very beginning of the game. There are 3 core flavors: Baron, Elemental (in the initial link), and Combination (note this guide from is viable for ). Since a Baron helmet may be difficult to get early league (but can have the best damage), I recommend either Elemental or the Combination to start with. The advantage of the Elemental is the damage is higher, where the Combination build has better survival (it’s just not as quick at mapping and bossing). The downside to a SRS build is with bosses that attack and move so quickly that it’s hard to cast your SRS while running around. One solution is to swap in a Spell Totem for such circumstances (Izaro is a notorious PITA for SRS builds without top notch cast speed).

- 10) Ethereal Knives (EK) with Ring of Blades is another build that, even after the threshold gem nerf from 10 projectiles to 5, does a great job of hammering through maps. While taking down bosses is a bit slower than before, progress to end-game is very quick, and gear upgrades have a substantial impact, making it a favorite among veteran players.

- 11) Righteous Fire Totems paired with Searing Bond pretty much melts everything. It is Shaper viable, but doesn’t clear as fast as other builds. This build is incredibly easy to get up and running and it can do nearly all end-game content. Once you get Soul Mantle (which is a common unique), it’s pure melty magic. Clearing maps, Bosses and Zerg Breaches; this build does it all. I was quite surprised at how much I liked this build, and it performed better than each of the below builds as a league starter for balanced clearing, boss killing and survival.

- 12) Frostbolt Totems have amazing clear speed and can 1-shot the entire screen. The only real disadvantage is the single-target damage can be quite lacking – but the build is fun, powerful, and can take the character to level for those who want to farm shaped maps. If you want to see FB Totems in action, check out this video. Lifting also released a 4-totem Hierophant version of this build; the complete guide can be found here.

- 13) Glacial Cascade Mines are extremely powerful. Numerous players who followed ZiggyD’s guide after the launch of have reported it’s one of the best builds they have ever played. I personally found it quite clunky, but the damage is quite impressive. For those who don’t mind the play style, it’s rock-solid.

- 14) Flameblast Totems (also known as Pizzasticks or Pizzablast) are a great common league starter, annihilating enemies and burning them to a cinder. The build also works beautifully with just 4 links, and doesn’t require any custom crafted gear. The only downside is the “spin up” time of casting; if not synchronized properly with certain bosses and situations, the chance of dying raises substantially.

- 15) The Frostblade Raider is also a very popular starting build. It scales well and performs great at end-game; especially now that one can purchase the Fight for Survival unique threshold jewel in Act 5. The major downside of Frostblades is single-target damage early on, but once you pass a threshold, it can melt bosses. But prior to that time, fighting bosses and some high hit rares can be tedious.

There are definitely other great starter builds that could have made it on this top 15, but I wanted to provide what I had personal experience with, as well as recommendations from the PoE community (through numerous threads and discussions). Each one of the above mentioned builds work great as a starter; they are fun, powerful, and capable of taking both new and veteran players alike to end-game. Additionally, each build is solid for SSF (solo self found) play as well.

I hope this list helps the PoE community; here’s to the upcoming launch and the fantastic job Grinding Gear Games has done with Path of Exile!

- New portal looks pretty slick with it being on the floor. Gonna aim for that one.

- Definitely take the 15 builds with a grain of salt, though many of them (ex. SRS) have stood the test of time over months and are still very strong endgame builds.

Not sure how useful a list of starter builds is when we don't have patch notes. Skills like frost blades and selfcast dark pact are especially iffy when we know vaal pact is getting reworked.

And with thatpow! I'm gone!

True, but I reckon a lot of them will stay solid because they've been solid for a long time (ex. SRS) or require some a little bit of changing due to a buff/nerf.

All that's left is to wait for Patch Notes and Dev Manifesto on Balance. I forgot which one is on Monday and which one is on Tuesday.

I think i'll do dark pact totems then later on do a poet's pen build.

From what I've seen so far regarding the Dark Pact nerf, it lost a small amount of dmg + AoE, but overall it's still a powerful skill. Just not OP any more.

As for Poet's Pen, I just wanna get two of them and start experimenting with so many build ideas lol.

The Expedition Challenge League

  • Challenge leagues are a great opportunity for a fresh start in a new economy. All of your old characters and items are still present in the Standard and Hardcore leagues, but you're encouraged to join the new leagues, complete challenges and demonstrate your mastery of Path of Exile!
  • In the Expedition Challenge League, you'll meet a group of Kalguuran traders and assist them with recovering their ancestors' runed artifacts. At marked Expedition sites, you must strategically place a series of explosives and detonate them. These explosions unearth a horde of undead Kalguur that must be slain in order to gather the equipment and artifacts buried among them. These artifacts may be turned into one of the Kalguuran traders who each offer a different style of trade themed around bartering, gambling, dealing and exchanging.
  • You may also discover Logbooks which chronicle the locations of sprawling Expedition sites. These can be crafted and traded with other players. Take them to Dannig, the leader of the Kalguur, and he'll grant you passage to one of the locations outlined in the Logbook. In these exotic locations, you'll find a large Expedition that must be excavated with an even longer chain of explosives.
  • During your Expeditions, you must be careful to manage your levels of risk and return. Signs located at the Expedition sites clearly mark out the most dangerous areas to excavate. Special monsters and remnants of past Kalguuran settlements are clearly marked and detonating them can make your Expeditions much more challenging.
  • With , there are Standard, Hardcore and Solo Self-Found variations of the Expedition challenge league available. They have the same core mechanics and items. You can create private league versions of these leagues, with mods that make the game harder.
  • The new challenge leagues include a set of 40 new challenges. When you complete 12 challenges, you will receive the Expedition Footprints. When you reach 24 challenges, you will receive the Expedition Weapon Effect. At 36 challenges completed you'll receive Expedition Portal Effect. These microtransactions are only obtainable in this league.
  • From the 19th challenge onwards and for every third challenge after that, you will receive pieces of the Expedition Totem Pole decoration to display in your hideout. The Totem Pole permanently showcases how many of the Expedition challenges you completed during the league.

Expedition Challenge Rewards

The Expedition leagues include 40 optional challenges. Completing them awards the following microtransactions:

Abyssal jewels drop from abysses, for this challenge you need to put it on a piece of gear and in youre skill tree. You can only put abyssal jewels in gear with an abyssal socket by doing abysses stygian belt will drop quite frequently stygian belts have an abyssal socket on them. Putting an abyssal jewel in the skill tree is as simple as putting it in any jewel slot you may have.

By defeating the boss in any vaal side area and opening the chest have a chance to drop either a vaal gem or a sacrifice fragment. So just complete all vaal areas you come across which you should do anyway and this should come naturally.

[PathofExile 2.1] T15 Abyss Map Double Boss - The Infernal King - Tanky Twirl LL

Abysses are interactable objects in instances which spawns cracks and pits that spawn monsters. They can spawn from Act 6 onwards.

Abysses start spawning in acts Act 6 and onwards and in maps. They have a 10% chance to spawn in each of these instances. Abysses are marked on the minimap with a green icon .

Upon walking over an Abyss, a crack will form on the ground, and a small number of monsters will spawn out of it. The crack will expand as you follow it. The crack will eventually spawn a pit, which spawns many more monsters, including rare monsters. If the player takes too long to follow the crack into a pit or kill most of the enemies that spawn from the pit, it will close up. Otherwise, it will create another crack that leads to a different pit. An Abyss will normally create three or four pits[citation needed], but since the cracks can't cross themselves or each other, the Abyss may end prematurely if it works itself into a corner.

Clearing the enemies out of the last pit will spawn an Abyssal Trove, which can be opened for loot. In addition to generic loot, an Abyssal Trove will always contain at least one Abyss jewel, possibly more.

In zone levels 70 and up, instead of an Abyssal Trove, it may open an entrance to the Abyssal Depths instead.

Abyss Jewels

Abyss jewels have the same functions as regular jewels, but with some differences. They offer different types of bonuses from regular jewels and most mods have tiers that depend on item level. They can be socketed in the jewel slot of the passive skill tree, but also in items with an abyss socket, such as a Stygian ViseHas 1 Abyssal Socket and unique Abyss items.

Stygian Vise

Stygian Vise is a belt with an abyssal socket as an implicit, allowing it to equip abyss jewels. Stygian Vises can only be found in the Abyssal Depths, which are dropped from the area's boss.

Abyssal Depths

Abyssal Depths is a side zone that can spawn in Abysses in zone levels 70 and up. It contain Abyss monsters. The boss in this area is either a Stygian Spire or an Abyssal Lich, the latter which drops unique items.

Version history

Version Changes
  • Fixed a bug where Abysses sometimes did not spawn their chests.
  • The area transition to an Abyssal Depths area now becomes interactable more quickly after appearing.
  • Monsters, crystals and other boss encounter elements are now destroyed when Amanamu is defeated.
  • Abyss has been rolled into the core game! You can now encounter Abysses in the world from Part II onwards. Each area has approximately a 10% chance to spawn an Abyss.
  • Abyssal Depths can no longer appear in areas below level
  • With , there are Standard and Hardcore variations of the Abyss challenge league available, as well as solo self-found variants of both. They have the same core mechanics and items. In the Abyss League, players will encounter cracks in the ground. Get too close, and these cracks widen and spread, allowing the terrible monsters to climb from their inky depths. Pursue these cracks, and you may discover a massive chasm from which dangerous packs of monsters emerge. Once you defeat these monsters, the Abyss continues to propagate, creating more chasms. Take too long, and the Abyss will seal shut, but if you're quick and deadly enough, a chest filled with valuable rewards will emerge from below.
  • As players progress through the Abyss League, some pits may offer access to the Abyssal Depths below. These Abyssal Depths are packed with monstrous creatures and valuable rewards, and culminate in an exciting boss encounter.
  • Monsters and chests from the Abyss can drop Abyss Jewels. Like other Jewels, these can be placed in sockets in your passive tree to grant powerful bonuses. Unlike other Jewels, they have a set of exclusive new properties and can also be placed in Abyssal Sockets on your items! These sockets can be found on the new Abyss Uniques and a new base type of Abyss-socketed belt: the Stygian Vise.
