Debate has been ongoing for years as to when an automatic swing gate needs an electric lock. Some say when a gate is wider than 1.8 metres whilst others will say 2.5 metres. The reality is it depends on the degree of security you wish to acheive. If the gate is automated simply for convenience and has little or new security value then perhaps you can get away without but if any degree of security is required please use the lock.

Electric locks have grown in popularity due to the security and convenience they provide. Electric locks may be used on residential and commercial doors, pedestrian gates, automated single gates, and automated driveway gates (swing and slide gate operator models).

Securely lock down your gate or door electromechanically or electromagnetically. What's the difference, you may ask?

Electromechanical locks use an electric impulse to trigger something mechanical to engage (usually a latch). These types of locks are strong, durable, and capable of being used in any aforementioned application and environment (indoor & outdoor use). These are simple to use with nearly any type of access control device and simple to install.

Electromagnetic locks on the other hand, do not rely on a latch to engage/ disengage with power cycling on/off. Instead, these locks consist of an electromagnet which mounts on the fixed door frame, or gate post and a strike plate which mounts on the moving door or gate. These self-align and magnetic forces take over to lock gates and doors securely in place. Releasing lock occurs instantly with turning off power to magnet. Electromagnetic security locks are also simple to install, easy to use, and compatible with an assortment of access control devices such as card readers, keypads and intercoms, keyswitches and pushbuttons, and proximity readers.
