Dogs available for adoption in Wichita

When looking at the makeup of American families today, it’s rare to see a home where a pet isn’t part of the family. According to the most recent data from the APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 67% of households—or around 85 million homes—own a pet. Of these households, dogs and cats top the list of most popular pets, with 63.4 million and 42.7 million households owning dogs and cats, respectively.

In exploring the history of animal shelters and rescue organizations in the country, nothing proves as problematic as the lack of a centralized reporting system to collect data on these organizations. Most of the shelter statistics that are available and accepted today are estimates based on several period surveys, including the aforementioned APPA National Pet Owners Survey along with the AVMA U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook. Without a nationally codified and streamlined process for collecting, organizing, and reporting on shelter data, there has been a grave lack of transparency around the country’s shelters. That makes it difficult not only to pinpoint accurate statistics regarding sheltered animals in America but also to understand the true state of animal welfare in the country, which is the first step to improving that welfare.

If you’ve been considering bringing home a furry companion, be sure to keep reading. Stacker compiled a list of dogs available for adoption in Wichita on Petfinder, ranging in age, breed composition, temperament, and needs. It’s important to note that pet adoption is a huge responsibility and requires available savings for emergency and routine veterinary care, a day-to-day routine and game plan for coverage if the pup needs to be left at home during the day (i.e. hiring a dog walker), and time and attention devoted to training your newest family member. Be sure to do due diligence on breed research to see what kind of dog will be the best fit for your lifestyle.

Without further ado, here are adoptable dogs in your home city.

Adoptions

Animals can now be adopted from Animal Services. Though all animals are held for a certain amount of time in order for an owner to reclaim, an adoption application can be accepted on any animal being held at Animal Services.

Must be 18 or over to adopt an animal.

Our adoption fee is $40 which includes basic vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, deworming, microchip and a City license. Canines are heartworm tested and felines are feline leukemia tested.

The adopter is responsible for also having the animal spayed/neutered at the veterinarian of their choice as well as obtaining a rabies vaccination. The spay/neuter surgery is prepaid and scheduled at the adopter's chosen veterinary clinic.

All animals in our shelter can be seen at Petango. Animals currently being held in our adoption program are labeled as "Adoptable".

Areas Pals Animal Rescue, Inc. Serves

We are located in Wichita, Kansas. Because we do home visits for our dogs we do most of our adoption locally but do some out of state where we have fosters who will drive to do the home visit.

Pals Animal Rescue, Inc.'s Adoption Process

We require an adoption application to be filled out. We will ask for past/present pet history and a veterinarian reference which we will contact. We require a good veterinarian history of your pets being spayed/netuered, on heartworm prevention and a fenced yard to keep them safe when they are outside.

Our adoption fee is $200.00 for dogs and $60.00 for cats. Are dogs are tested for heartworm, lyme and erlichia, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered. Are cats are tested for FIV, Feluk, and heartworm, and are also vaccinated and spayed/neutered

About Pals Animal Rescue, Inc.

We are a non sheltered rescue and are all volunteers. We have around 24 foster parents who take animals into their homes. Many of animals come to us in very bad condition. The foster parents work on house training, socializing them and getting them ready for their "forever home".

We make sure we represent them as they are, both positive and negatives and match the pet with the home. First and foremost we are concerned about the animals in our care and promise them a carefully screened very good home where they will be a member of the family.

Support Adoption and Rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why Should You Adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Who We Are

For the past 35 years we have cared for the homeless, abused and abandoned animals in our area by providing food, shelter, medical care and affection until they can find their forever homes.

During the past five years we have achieved the designation of a “No Kill” shelter. Shelters that have a greater than 90% save rate are classified as “no kill”. Since 2016, our save rate has been over 96%. Click here to read more on adoptions.

How We Are Funded

We are locally-owned and operated, and are not affiliated with any national animal welfare organization. We do not receive any funding from local or state governmental agencies. 100% of our operating expenses come from the generosity of individuals, businesses, and foundations in our community.

Our average monthly operating expense is $25,000 to provide shelter, food, medication, spaying/neutering, chipping, grooming, and other services to prepare animals for adoption.

Our Raise the Woof fundraising campaign will help us build a high-quality shelter and adoption facility to benefit our animals, volunteers, and community members interested in adoption. Click here to read about our plans.
