Be Smart, Check in Advance. CARFAX — Your Vehicle History.

CARFAX — Your Vehicle History Expert

Sometimes what you don't know can't hurt you, but that's not the case when buying a used car. As an independent vehicle history provider, at CARFAX we've made it our mission to tell you everything you need to know by uncovering as many events as possible from the previous life of a used car. Our primary goal is to help you get to know your next car from the inside out before deciding to make an investment that will be part of you and your family's everyday life. We believe your next car shouldn't be hiding anything from you.

CARFAX Vehicle History Reports contain over 28 billion historical records from 20 European countries, the US and Canada, which are updated daily with new information.

Even if you live in a country we don't collect vehicle data from, it's still always worth checking the Vehicle Identification Number without obligation. The used car import and export market is booming and many owners would be surprised to find out exactly what happened to their vehicle during its previous life abroad.

Privacy for Customers — Transparency over Vehicles

Let's be clear: Although we strive to find every detail of a vehicle's life so far, we are focused only on the vehicle's history, and do not collect any information on previous owners. The information we provide relates solely to the vehicle, its odometer reading, any accidents that have been covered up, where the vehicle comes from and much more — it never gets personal. We've uncovered irreparable damage several times in the past, but other times our vehicle history checks draw a blank — and sometimes that's actually a good thing.

Second Hand — Not Second Best

Did you know that considerably more used cars are sold than new cars? We think this second-hand system is nothing short of fantastic. However, it goes without saying that it gives rise to different methods and tactics: Some sellers will disguise a car that's been in an accident under a fresh coat of paint, tamper with the odometer or conceal theft. This is one of the less appealing aspects of buying second hand. Our goal is to establish trusting relationships between buyers and sellers, since this is the best way to help customers make the right decision. Your new car should be reliable and make you feel safe, as well as make you feel like you haven't paid too much.

But more than anything else, we don't want you or your family unknowingly sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle that isn't 100% safe. This is why we strive to take these vehicles off the road, which not only makes the used car market safer but our streets safer too.

CARFAX — 35+ Years of Experience in Vehicle Histories

CARFAX was founded in the US in 1984 and expanded into Europe in 2007. Around 100 team members spread across six European offices process vehicle information from 22 countries.

Fostering strategic partnerships with registration authorities, law enforcement agencies, government departments, insurance companies, inspection centers and numerous other leading companies around the world has enabled us to compile a unique international database for vehicle histories. We use this database to help make the used car market more transparent. We give everyone in the process of buying a used car access to what is currently the world's most comprehensive source for vehicle history reports, and is growing day by day.

We remain neutral and independent despite our partnerships — our sole purpose is help customers make an informed choice and ensure their safety and the safety of their family. This includes never collecting any personal details — we do not accept any PII from data sources amongst the information we provide about a vehicle. We ensure that data protection laws are observed at all times. Furthermore, we always collect our data in compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks — in all the countries in which we are active. We expressly distance ourselves from illegal activities such as data theft, scraping and hacking.

Used 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe for Sale

2005 Chevrolet Tahoe - It is an OK vehicle.

The vehicle is used to haul around 5 kids and 2 adults daily from work to after school activities and family road trips to Louisiana. The space is there for us; I love the walk through that is located on the second row. This allows us to get to the third row very easily. I also enjoy the smooth ride and how easily the truck maneuvers when driving it. So far, it has hardly needed any repairs, so it is definitely reliable. For some reason, my kids do not get in and out of the vehicle easily; they are always slipping out when trying to put their feet on the side step. I don't like how heavy the trunk door is when opening and closing it. The trunk space is so tiny for us as well. The issues I have with the truck are cosmetic and minor. I don't like how heavy the trunk door is when opening and closing it. The trunk space is so tiny for us as well. The issues I have with the truck are cosmetic and minor. I can say it is reliable, but I think we have outgrown the vehicle now that our kids are between the ages of 6 to 10 years of age. When we bought the truck, our kids were 2 to 7 years of age. They require more space now, and this truck does not have that. We drive it back and forth to Louisiana at least twice a year from Texas, and it get us there an back. I do like that the truck does not look very bulky and oversized.

We drove to Grand Prairie, TX, this past Christmas and took the truck through the prairie lights. The lights is set up along a 2-mile road, and the truck has to go about 10 mph with no lights on. I feel confident in knowing the truck would be no problem for that drive. My kids had so much fun relaxing in the back and enjoying all the lights the truck drove through.

The positives were the vehicle does give us good mileage driving a big family around. The vehicle comes with a second row pass through that goes to the third row. The vehicle can fit a family of 7, and that is not too common. The truck lasts a long time with the standard tune ups for any vehicle. The truck is easy to keep clean with its outside body style. Has up to 7 programmable radio station options, which is great because I listen to exactly 7 stations. The maneuvering of the steering wheel when driving is very smooth. The low maintenance is also something I have enjoyed. I have driven about 170,000 miles now and have barely done any repairs. It is definitely a reliable vehicle for my big family, and I can trust the truck will get us from point A to B.

The vehicle does not fit a growing family with mainly boys. When getting in and out of the truck, my younger kids always slip out. They find it hard to step onto the little step outside of the back door. When I need to use the trunk, it is so heavy to let up and close down. I find that the trunk space is not made for a big family; it is so small. We have to use the small back window to load items in the trunk instead of opening the big door. I usually end up pushing the wrong button. The way to turn the A/C from hot to cold is not smooth. I have to turn a dial, and I prefer to push buttons because the dial could get loose. Since it is a vehicle that fit a family of 7, I was disappointed that the vehicle did not come with a TV or DVD player in the back. Allowing better ease of moving the third-row and second-row seats would be nice. I never can remember how to move them around and have to get my husband to do it.

2005 Chevrolet Tahoe - Solid hard-working vehicle

We purchased this Tahoe as we pull a boat and seem to always be hauling around stuff. To us, the Tahoe seems to be the same quality as the much higher-priced Escalade. While it does not get the greatest mileage, it makes up for that in comfort and reliability. We have well over 100,000 miles on this vehicle and have spent very little on repairs. We recently discussed replacing it, and our mechanic said he felt it was in great shape and saw no need for us to do so. The interior is nice with smooth leather and sleek lines,

Our Tahoe pulls our 23-foot boat with ease. It has great visibility. The last row of seats comes out, and you can haul a ton of stuff in the back. Being honest this vehicle gets terrible gas mileage. When we are towing the boat, it is even worse! However it's the price we pay to tow with ease. It's high up. CHEVROLET TAHOE: LEADER AMONG FULL-SIZE SUVS

Chevy Tahoe enters 2005 with several notable refinements and upgrades designed to further solidify its position as North America’s best-selling full-size SUV because of its premium appointments, refined ride and handling, and outstanding levels of safety and capability.

GM’s OnStar safety and security system is standard in all equipment groups for 2005. All Tahoes also have a rear liftgate with lift-up glass and side-sill assist steps have been redesigned for improved aerodynamics and durability.

Additional functional changes include a more powerful standard alternator – 160 amps versus 145 – as well as new standard and optional rear axle ratios for both two- and four-wheel-drive models.  Tahoe’s tire pressure monitoring system has been revised to identify the specific tire, replacing the general alert system (does not include spare).

Notable equipment group revisions for 2005 include the availability of two-wheel drive on the Z71 off-road performance package; a new optional stereo system with a touch-screen navigation system; and 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels now included as part of the uplevel LT package.

Two new exterior colors are offered for both Tahoe LS and LT: Sandstone Metallic and Bermuda Blue Metallic.

Powertrains

Tahoe’s powertrain lineup includes GM’s Vortec 4800 4.8L V-8 as standard, rated at 285 horsepower (213 kw) and 295 lb.-ft. (400 Nm) of torque. Owners seeking even more power and capability can choose the Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8, which generates 295 horsepower (220 kw) and 330 lb.-ft. (447 Nm) of torque. GM’s Hydra-Matic 4L60-E four-speed automatic transmission is standard with both engines. Tahoe can tow up to 7,700 pounds (3,493 kg) when properly equipped.

Improved fuel economy

The 2005 Tahoe extends its fuel economy leadership with four major enhancements that lead to a nearly one mpg fuel economy improvement.

The 2005 Suburban features an all-electric cooling system (compared to fan and fan clutch on 2004 models). The all-electric cooling system consists of two 200-watt electric fan packages and an improved-dissipation radiator.  The new cooling system provides a number of advantages:

  • A reduction in parasitic losses due to disengaged fan speed with a corresponding increase in combined city/highway fuel economy

  • A significant improvement in idle A/C performance (driver/passenger comfort) as well as an ability to idle with A/C on for extended periods in very high ambient temperatures

  • A reduction in customer complaints normally attributed to unusual engine noise or transmission noise/delayed shift, which are actually fan noise issues

A new voltage control system monitors the battery’s charge status and controls the vehicle’s generator to minimize parasitic voltage loss.

Aerodynamic changes also were made to improve fuel economy. For example, tow hook and foglamp openings are now sealed when those items are not ordered on the vehicle. The center hole in the front air deflector also is sealed; an extension was added to the front air deflector; and the aerodynamics for the running boards were improved.

Roomy, flexible interior

In addition to its powerful V-8 engines, Tahoe can be instantly reconfigured for any combination of passenger and cargo-carrying ability. Almost 105 cubic feet (2,962L) of cargo space is created when the second row seats are folded forward, creating a flat load floor. An optional third-row bench seat gives Tahoe room for up to nine passengers. Second-row seats provide easy access to the third row. The third-row rear seat has a 50/50 split-fold design to provide a variety of cargo/passenger configurations. The seats can be flipped forward and stowed for more cargo room, or individually and easily removed to create a flat load surface.

Besides a high degree of versatility, every Tahoe has an extensive list of cabin comforts, such as power windows with driver express-down, power door locks, cruise control, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, multi-lingual driver information center, temperature and compass displays integrated into the rearview mirror, and deep-tint glass aft of the B-pillar.

A tri-zone, manually controlled heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is standard, enabling the driver and front passenger to adjust the temperature to their individual comfort levels – up to a 30-degree Fahrenheit (13.9-degree Celsius) difference between the two front zones. Manual rear air conditioning is also standard.

An available tri-zone automatic HVAC system provides outstanding comfort. Rear electronic climate control is standard with the optional front system, providing second-row passengers with an automatically controlled temperature setting independent from the two front occupants, creating true tri-zone comfort.

Available exterior mirrors feature power-tilt glass and power folding to protect them in narrow spaces; heating elements that clear frost, snow or ice; left-side electrochromatic glass that automatically dims headlight glare; puddle lights; turn-signal indicators in the glass; and a memory feature. An available power-adjustable camper mirror can be extended to a vehicle width of as much as 106 inches (2,692 mm). Power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals are standard on LT and Z71 models, and optional on LS versions.

Safety and security

Tahoe has a full complement of safety and security features, starting with dual-stage frontal air bags for supplemental protection for front-seat passengers. Dual-stage frontal air bags are designed to help reduce the risk of air bag-induced injury. When the air bag system’s control unit detects an impact, it determines whether the crash is severe enough to trigger a deployment, and whether the primary amount of inflation is sufficient. The primary stage alone will deploy in most frontal impacts requiring the supplemental protection of an air bag, while a secondary stage is designed to deploy in more severe frontal collisions.

The Tahoe also has GM’s Passenger Sensing System (PSS). PSS uses the latest sensing technology to turn the front passenger air bag on or off. If the sensor system detects an unoccupied front passenger seat or the presence of a smaller occupant, the front passenger air bag is designed to automatically turn off so it would not deploy in the event of a frontal collision. A status indicator on the instrument panel alerts occupants that the passenger air bag is on or off. Even with this system, GM strongly recommends to restrain child passengers in an appropriate child seat placed in the second or third row of the vehicle. Never install a rear-facing infant seat in front of an active air bag. GM also recommends that all children 12 and under ride in the rear seat when possible.

Other standard safety and security features include the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child-seat attachment system in the rear seats, and GM’s PASSlock II theft deterrent system. The LATCH system provides two lower anchors and a top tether anchor to be used to secure a child seat to the vehicle seat structure. These anchorages are designed to make it easier to properly install compatible child safety seats.

Also standard are four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Hydroboost, a feature that provides more reserve power assist for braking under specific conditions. The system continues to provide sufficient power assist to stop the vehicle if the engine stalls or is turned off, by using power steering fluid pressure to decrease brake pedal effort.

Tahoe’s available safety and stability features include driver and front-passenger side air bags, traction assist on 2WD models, and GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control system standard on all models equipped with the Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8 engine.

StabiliTrak helps the driver maintain control in sudden maneuvers, particularly in low traction conditions, in emergency lane changes and during avoidance maneuvers.

StabiliTrak assists the vehicle in maintaining the driver’s intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the driver’s use of the brake pedal.

StabiliTrak uses an accelerator pedal position sensor, a brake master cylinder pressure sensor and a steering wheel angle sensor as inputs to interpret the driver’s desired path and whether to accelerate or decelerate the vehicle. StabiliTrak also uses these sensors plus a lateral accelerometer and yaw rate sensor to determine the vehicle’s actual path.

If the difference between the driver’s desired path and the vehicle’s actual path becomes great enough, StabiliTrak takes appropriate action to assist the driver with maintaining the desired path. If the vehicle begins to “snowplow,” or understeer, StabiliTrak applies the inside rear brake to help turn the vehicle. If the vehicle begins to fishtail, or oversteer, StabiliTrak applies the outside front brake to straighten the vehicle. StabiliTrak is integrated with the traction control and ABS systems.

StabiliTrak helps the driver maintain control in sudden maneuvers or low traction conditions. If the system determines that the vehicle is not responding appropriately to the driver's steering, StabliTrak precisely reduces engine torque and applies precise amounts of pressure to the individual front brakes to slow the vehicle and help bring it back to its intended path.

Wide choice of entertainment systems

Impressive entertainment systems – from an available Bose sound system to a Panasonic DVD Passenger Entertainment System – add to Tahoe’s comforts, especially on longer journeys. These systems (except the base fleet radio) feature the next-generation Radio Data System and can interface with services such as the optional XM Satellite Radio (continental U.S. only). Available rear-seat audio controls allow second-row passengers to enjoy a separate audio source from front-seat occupants. An available custom-designed Bose audio system uses a high-powered six-channel amplifier and an eight-speaker sound system with sub-woofer.

XM Satellite Radio provides more than 120 coast-to-coast, digital-quality channels of original commercial-free music and premier news, sports and talk as well as advanced traffic and weather information for select major metropolitan areas nationwide. Consumers can subscribe to the basic service for $9.99 a month. In addition, GM customers with GMAC financing can choose to include the XM subscription in their car payments.

OnStar-equipped Tahoes feature new sixth-generation hardware with digital and analog coverage. OnStar’s Gen 6 hardware also includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the United States and Canada. Using the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Personal Calling that allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls using a powerful three-watt digital/analog system and external antenna for greater reception.

Why the 2005 Chevy Tahoe is such an incredible buy under $7000

2005 Chevrolet Tahoe Review

Full-size power tool for families and workers who define "active"

Chevrolet Tahoe Full Overview

Now deep in its second generation, the Chevrolet Tahoe has been around since 1999, enjoying great success until 2005, when its age, high gas prices, and growing competition conspired to cause a dramatic drop-off in sales. Still, the Tahoe has been a perennial best-seller for a reason: It hits the sweet spot in the full-size SUV segment. The Tahoe is a right-sized, garage-friendly alternative to the Suburban behemoth and even pickup trucks. It tows up to 7,800 pounds, offers a choice of powerful V-8 engines, provides plenty of room and comfortable passenger quarters, and is capable off road.

While the styling won't melt you with its flourishes, there's really nothing offensive about it, either. In fact, it makes a strong statement about form following function, and this basic, honest shape can be dressed up and accessorized in any number of ways. Despite current high gas prices, many shoppers still consider a full-size SUV to be a reasonable proposition--and "reasonable" is the Tahoe's byword.

Developed alongside the Silverado pickups, the Tahoe shares clear visual lineage with broad, square shoulders tempered by rounding, almost friendly curves. The wheel arches are squared off, reflecting the brand's current truck design aesthetic, seen all the way down to the Colorado pickup. The Chevrolet crossbar grille, smoothed headlights, and slightly tapering hood add grace notes to the front. Sandstone and Bermuda Blue are new colors for 2005. The rear liftgate with hinged rear glass is standard on all models. Side mirrors offer a folding feature (powered on Z71 and LT models) to avoid damage in narrow spaces. Z71 and LT models' driver-side mirrors also feature built-in turn signals and electrochromatic glass that automatically dims headlight glare from following vehicles. Black or color-keyed fender flares, standard on the Z71 and optional on other Tahoes, add a touch of butch to the otherwise flat flanks.

Interior trim was revised for 2005, freshening the Tahoe with new fabrics and plastics. Unfortunately, the overall look is still that of old-think GM, with hard, unpleasing plastics, dated designs, and significant panel gaps. Still, if plain, rugged function is what you're after, the outgoing Tahoe is hard to fault, with more storage than most competitors competitor and easy-to-use controls, designed for gloved-hand operation.

With the optional, third-row bench, up to nine people can be seated. This third-row seat also splits 50/50 and folds forward. Without this bench, and with the second-row folded forward, there is a flat load floor and minivan-like cargo space. The rear glass is deeply tinted to help keep everybody in the third row comfortable. Power locks, power windows with driver-side one-touch down, and cruise control are standard. A tri-zone, manual climate control system is standard, while automation of this system is optional. Second-row passengers can enjoy a separate audio source from that of the front-row people, and a rear-passenger DVD entertainment is available. The optional Bose sound system plays through eight speakers. XM satellite radio, also available, provides 120 channels for diverse listening tastes. The sixth-generation OnStar in-vehicle safety and security system boasts improved accuracy in voice recognition.

The Tahoe is equipped with dual-stage front airbags that deploy based on the severity of impact. Front-row side airbags are available. GM's Passenger Sensing System won't trigger the front passenger airbag if a child is seated or if the seat is unoccupied, acting as both a safety and repair-cost-reduction measure. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard. The included Hydroboost feature provides brake assist in panic-braking situations. StabiliTrak, GM's stability control system, is newly standard on all Tahoes.

Looking under the Tahoe's hood reveals a familiar face: the time-tested Chevy small-block V-8, offered here displacing 4.8 liters for 285 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque V-8, or with longer-stroke cylinders displacing 5.3 liters for 295 horses and 335 lb-ft of torque. The blocks of these overhead-valve engines are cast iron; the cylinder heads are cast aluminum. Although these engines are smooth enough and powerful enough, in terms of refinement, they trail the more technologically advanced V-8 offerings from Nissan and Toyota. Fuel economy, poor to start with, hardly differs between the two engines, though both happily consume regular unleaded fuel. Only one transmission, a four-speed automatic, is offered, and like so many other things with the Tahoe, it's good enough.

It doesn't take much time behind the wheel before the Tahoe's size becomes a non-issue. Its length is actually shorter than that of quite a few minivans. The V-8 engine's exhaust burbles pleasantly at idle, and serenity prevails inside the vehicle while cruising. One of the Tahoe's primary missions is to insulate the driver and passengers from all harshness, so the natural consequence is that this isn't the most highly involving driving experience. In some ways, the Tahoe is the spiritual heir of the "land yachts"--large sedans and wagons--that were so harshly criticized and even reviled during the 1970s and early 1980s. The steering system is highly boosted and isolated, creating a numb connection with the driver. The on-road isolation is made up for by off-pavement ability, as the Tahoe is right at home bouncing over rough terrain. The suspension and loose steering make easy work of harsh conditions, and the truck can be outfitted with the exceptional Z71 package to better tackle dirt-bound adventures.

Smoothly conducted gear changes in the automatic transmission are registered only by the change in engine note. With long pedal travel and sponge-like feel, braking doesn't provide the sensation of bite and modulation that is typical of the more impressive entries in the large SUV field. Directional stability on the highway is great, however, even when towing. The Tahoe faces the challenge of balancing serious workhorse ability and family-minded creature comforts in a vehicle that will most likely serve an as oversized station wagon. Without question, the Tahoe offers all the essential mechanical components, but in most configurations, the resulting package feels soft and less precise than most competitors, ultimately making it seem dated.

For buyers seeking a full-size SUV as a personality statement, the Tahoe is the wrong choice. It just wants to go about its business, which is to effortlessly haul the family boat and lots of kids to the lake or to tow the snowmobiles or ATVs to the trails. The current wave of rebates and low financing rates are persuasive, as is the vehicle's solid value history. For GM-loyal buyers who can wait, it might be worth holding out for the next-generation Tahoe, expected to reach showrooms in the first half of 2006.

The Chevrolet Tahoe offers room, power, and toughness to those who can will exploit its talents.

What's HOT:

+ Touch-screen navigation

+ Available Z71 off-road suspension

+ Standard stability control and OnStar security system

What's NOT:

- Lack of second-row airbags

- Older design, especially the dour interior

- Drivetrain sophistication showing age

For 2005, Stabilitrak stability control and OnStar become standard offerings, touch-screen navigation is available, and 17-inch aluminum wheels are included on the LT model.

The 5.3-liter/295-horse V-8 achieves nearly the same fuel economy as the smaller engine and acquits itself very well in all situations.
