Originally I just bought this game because it was on one of those twenty five cent sales that the Android market does occasionally. I enjoyed it enough to repurchase it when my phone died for the full price of $3. If you've ever played Final Fantasy 5 (that none of us pirated, I'm sure) you'll quickly notice similarities to its job class; with some minor differances being that you can always use any ability you learn, and most jobs, er, tablets, are restricted to certain characters. Graphics: Actually pretty good, considering its on a phone. Sound: No complaints, but nothing memorable. Gameplay: It's what makes the game! Very fun, very customizable characters. Story: Meh. TL;DR: It's a very fun game, but the story and music won't leave you in awe. =============== 3) Introduction =============== This will be my fourth FAQ (well, 5th if you count my abandoned Ys guide.) I was surprised to find a game this _fun_ didn't have a walkthrough, but at the same time, it is just an Android phone game. To any of you lucky enough to have stumbled on this guide, I hope you enjoy it as well. I have played through it once, and am playing through it again to write this FAQ. If you have any input, my info is at the bottom. =================== 4) Tablets and Kits =================== Here I will detail the game's tablets and kits, with a review of the included skills and passive effects, and how good I think they are for the 3 main characters. As of version 0.9, this section is unimplemented. Human Tablets Golem Kits ============================ 5) How to Start a Boss Fight ============================ Throughout the walkthrough I will generally give specific tips on what your starting turns against a boss should look like, looking at the skills you have available at the time. But the idea is the same: come into a boss fight with all characters having a maxed out BREAK bar and do as much damage as possible. This generally involves selecting your strongest abilities and ordering them correctly so your last strike has a large multiplier on it. At the end of the game with the best skills (and a few lucky crits), you can defeat bosses on the third turn. Early on in the game this just involves using your strongest abilities on turn one. For example, Kreis repeat attack, Lish Fire Bolt, Dau Heavy Crush. Later on the first turn might be Kries using Charge, Dau using Armor Break, and Lish using Enchant Weapon, and then the second turn with using your strongest attacks with Break. It's only towards the end of the game the setup might take 3 turns, and that's only if you have all the abilities unlocked. One further note: make good use of the multiplier effect. Certain abilities give you a lot of multiplier for the people following up the attack. Kries's Sacred Fencer's first and final ability do this very well, so you'll generally want to use this first in the seqeuence. Until the end of the game, Dau doesn't have any such abilities, so I usually have him end my sequences with Crush or Heavy Crush. After Lish starts using High Mage, I normally have her end the combos with the elemental weakness of the boss (if it's not light or darkness) and maybe have Dau break the enemy's magic resistance instead of Armor Break. But one thing you always want to make sure of is that when you finally use your BREAKS and start laying down the pain, you have your +damage stances going. For Kries it's Berserking (guess which tablet), for Lish it's Magic Attacker from the Mage, and for Dau it's Battle Arms from Heavy Armor. Remember to take them off and resume your standard stances afterwords, or your characters will be taking extra damage, which can be dangerous. ============== 5) Walkthrough ============== Once you've started the game, you see a lovely intro with a coup going on. Interestingly enough, the princess doesn't have a picture, but her friend does. I wonder if that has any bearing on the plot later on? Hm =) We then meet our heroes, Kreist and Dautaru. Say hello, reader. --A sunny forest path-- Use your finger on the touchscreen to move. Enemies that you get close to may notice you, if you are in front of or to the side of them, and give chase. However, if you can engage them in battle from behind, you get a free round of attacks in. Beware, enemies can do the same to you if they attack you from behind. The east exit is not usable, so go west. A chest with a potion will be plainly visible, grab it if you like. Eventually you will see some wolves about to sit down to dinner, but you will crash their party. Autoattack (top left of your screen in battle) to win. After that, you meet Laishutia. Leave. --World Map-- Enter the town. The other zones are not enterable right now. --Leinoy town-- Enter the inn. Text.. text.. Okay let's leave. --World Map-- Stop. Go into the menu, and click Kriest, then Tablets. Change him to Cleric. Leave him there until you're informed he learned the Heal spell. It'll be helpful for him to be able to help when needed with healing. After he's done, change him back to Knight. You will also eventually want Lish to learn Knight's Repeat Attack, but don't worry about the rest. Head west. --The Old Ruins-- I should note that it is a good idea to use the Cleric (Lish's) spell Weakpoint at least once on every enemy as you fight it, so you can see what its weak points are. Since you probably don't have the Mage tablet YET, it's not too important, but it will be helpful later and it's a good habit to have. Anyway, go east first for a potion, then turn around and go the other way. In the second room, we meet some new characters. After some text they leave. Go right and up, and step on the button. Enter the cell it opened for some Burgler's Shoes. Equip them on whoever, it'll make you run faster which makes it easier to ambush enemies (they have less time to surprise-turn-around.) Leaving the cell, continue north, and turn left for a KIT (Heavy Armor). The Guard passive on it is potentially useful, but Britburn is a worthless move. Leave the small room and continue right to enter a large room. To the top left (use your map to navigate =/ ) is a Spirit Potion and down from there is the TABLET: Thief! I strongly recommend putting Kreist on it long enough to learn the steal skill. The other skills thief can learn will sometimes work on bosses, but the effect is only temporary. Move west and just before a long hallway is a path north and south; north has nothing, south has a Revival Potion. After meeting up with them all... Go down the stairs. In the final room, check the map. Yup. Hug the right wall for a Soma (think Elixers from other games.) Heading north, you'll get asked if you want to continue. This always preceedes a boss, I recommend healing up and using a Campsite (you probably don't have one at the moment, but in the future.) Once you're ready to fight, accept. [Boss, Demon of the Seal] 4500hp Steal: Special Spirit Potion Swing your weapons, and use Lish and Kreis to heal as needed. He _can_ use Charge (an attack you'll see a lot in bosses) to deal damage to your entire party twice, so it's important to keep everyone above 300 hp or so. Don't be afraid to use healing potions. Bla bla bla, exit the dungeon and head back to town. --Leinoy town-- Now that you have some gold, head to the item vendor and purchase both Tablets, Hunter and Mage. Hunter is really only good for its stance on Kreist, though mage is good for Lish after she's done with the Cleric tablet. Next, to the weapons vendor. You can buy gear, but I recommend you always have it crafted. For an extra 20%, you get to distribute the merit points as you see fit. I recommend always putting all points into physical / magical attack. Yes, magical attack does mean healing spells heal for more. --The Abode of Fire-- !!Equip the Fire Quartz to Lish!! The first screen has some consumable items in chests. The second has KIT (High Mobility). It doesn't have anything very good, I wouldn't use it much. Moving on, we eventually fight a gentleman named Rulond. [Boss, Rulond] 5400hp Steal: Ring of Power Weakness: Wind. If you happen to have Mage on Lish, let the wind magics roar. Else, just beat him down. Beware of his Meteor Strike, which can do ~750 damage; use a revival potion if it kills anyone. Continue on. After a couple screens you will find another boss! [Boss, Genie of the Flame] HP: 6500 Steal: Fire Crystal Weakness: Water (bet you didn't guess that.) This guy only attacks once a turn, but that's all he needs. Two attacks to look out for deal ~300 and ~550 damage to your whole party. You'll probably go through your entire stash of life potions on this fight. Be absolutely sure to steal from him, the Fire Crystal is only obtainable from this boss. Some storyline, then we move on. Head back to the forest you started the game in. --A sunny forest path-- The flying enemies, looking like birds on the map, are almost impossible to sneak attack, so don't even try. The bees here can paralyze you, so prioritize them. Nothing special in chests here, and I trust you can find your way through this linear path. At the end is a boss, as always. [Boss, Ravenous Beast] 8550 hp Weakness: Earth Steal: Extra Special Life Potion (seriously.) This guy is a joke. Watch out for this charge attack that will do ~200 damage to all, but he's weak over all. If Lish knows earth magic, feel free to use it, if not just beat on him until he's gone. We move on to the town north-east of the forest we just left. --Millienna Town-- Item store has Berserker Tablet, slap it on Kreist until maxed. Forge new weapon + armor and equip it. Rest up in the inn and leave. On the world map, move south-east into the forest. --The Silent Forest-- There's nothing useful in the silent forest. You can search around if you like for consumable items and exp. From the entrance the path is south, east, east. Oh what's this? A woman? I wouldn't hit a woman... well I guess I'll have to. [Boss, RedNight] 9980hp Weakness: Water Steal: Soma This fight won't be so easy. Mow Down hits everyone for ~250, and Crimson Death will hit four times at random targets. I've never seen her hit the same person 4 times, but I don't doubt it can happen. Keep health up high this fight. If she increases her evasion, activate Snipe stance on Kreist and Ranger stance on Dau if you have them. Don't bother with Lish, she shouldn't be using anything other than magic anyway. --The Elves' Hamlet-- An item store here, but nothing particularly useful. Exit north when the plot is done unfolding. --The Abode of the Winds-- There are some unique items on the way through the dungeon. After a while you'll reach a long room with two exits to the north. In the south-west of that room is a Wind Quartz (equip to Lish). Take the top right exit for a KIT(SUPPORT). It sucks, but whatever. Exit, and take the top left exit for the big wind boss! [Boss, Dragon of the Winds] 11700hp Weakness: Earth Steal: Wind Crystal This guy isn't so bad if you have Wind Quartz on Lish. Aside from a few single target attacks, he can blind your party (about 4 turns), as well as an aoe attack called Tornado! which deals about 630 damage to each party member, so keep your health up. For the starting turn, I recommend Repeat Attack, Rock Strike, Crush. Be sure to steal the Wind Crystal from this guy. ///Accidentally skipped/// Around here I kept playing and forgot to record what I was doing. I'm very sorry,I'll fill in this part on my next playthrough. After the wind dragon, go to town and take the boat. New town, pick up the tablets in the shop. Head west to the cave. I can't remember if there was a miniboss. The main boss has dangerous status changes, so be ready to Cure from Lish or use an item to clear off the effects. We meet a new golem. Go to Lincache, then go north-west into the mountains. Of note is the KIT(HEAVY CLOSE RANGE) which you should immediately equip: every ability in it is extremely useful. When you fight the duo, it is possible to kill the first guy in two rounds. First round: Kriest Charge, Dau Armor Break, Lish Enchant Weapon on Dau. Second round: Lish Double Attack, Kreist (Berserk Stance) Crushing Attack, Dau (Battle Arms Stance) Heavy Crush. Both enemies have about 9k health. Once you have some fancy plants, Memory Quartz over to Lincache, then again over to the Elven Hamlet. Show off your quest item and he'll send you to the nearby town again and you'll have a new place to go by boat. Pick up Dark Mage tablet, but I wouldn't use it just yet; Lish is about to get a major tablet. It might be worth 100 points for her to learn a dark elemental attack though, your call. Head over to the cave. You'll meet RedNight again. Don't screw around, she's harder this time. Keep everyone's health up as a matter of priority, it's easy for her to kill someone from anywhere but full health. Head South after the bridge you fight her on (oooo, secrets revealed) to get Sacred Fencer tablet. I suspect you still have 'zerker tablet on; unless you're about to learn that +physical damage skill, equip sacred fencer. Its mastery skill is very nice for boss openers later in the game. ///End Accidentally skipped/// --The Cave of the Abyss (continued)-- After picking up Sacred Fencer, head to the eastern exit and take the first west path. In it you will find Tablet: High Priest. Healing Wind will prove invaluable in the future, and Reinforce is VERY handy as well. It sounds dangerous, but the amount of health lost is puny, and the amount of MP gained is very useful, both for bosses and regular monsters. Stop learning at Reinforce though, the other 3 abilities aren't particularly useful, and there will be better things to spend your TP on later. Moving on, you'll meet some familiar faces and your group gets shuffled. NOTE: If you're like me and enjoyed seeing everyone in your party level up at the same times, you can continue to do that after this section, but you need to do it a very specific way. First of all, obviously run away from all monster fights. At the first boss, make sure everyone is alive when it dies. Due to a glitch, Duataru will gain exp from the first boss, even though he is not there. On the second boss, make use of the Rozeim's Weakpoint ability and make sure Dautaru is dead when the fight ends. Done correctly, The main 3 will come out of this with the same exp gained. Rednight is pretty worthless. Throw Heavy Close Ranged on her. [Boss, Defender of the Abyss] 18000 HP. Weakness: Air, Light. Steal: Nothing. This guy is a big pushover. Keep everyone's HP above 450 and you'll win easily. Next we have Rozeim and Dautaru. Head East at the first fork to get Dau's special Kit, Ebony Crusader, but it's full of bad abilities. Keep Heavy Close Ranged on instead. The rest of the chests are consumable items. At the end of that section is a boss. [Boss, Watchman of the Abyss] 12600 HP. Weakness: Earth, Darkness. Steal: Unable to steal. Much the same as the last guy. One of his attacks deals 250 damage and stuns for one round. Note that Rozein's Galant ability pushes the combo counter up 50%. Lead off with Armor Break and whatever, and second turn use Galant and Break a Heavy Crush(Battle Arms) for massive damage. Continue with Galant + Heavy Crush for a quick victory. Afterwords, exit south-west. --Underworld World Map-- Go to the immediate town. --The Dwarves' Hamlet-- Story... The item shop contains nothing interesting, head to the weapon shop. Interestingly, he will only craft gear, not sell default, but you've never bought any gear, you've always been crafting it, right...? In case you haven't, for Dau and Kreis set all merit points to Physical Attack and for Lish all merit points to Magic Attack. Don't be surprised if you can't afford all 6 peices of gear, crafting gear is expensive. --Underworld World Map-- Leaving town, north-west leads to a dead end zone with a post-game bonus boss, so instead go south-west and we find our next dungeon. --The Abode of the Earth-- Note that you will start facing groups of up to 4 enemies from now on. I strongly recommend having Lish use her Mage abilities on enemies (not the one your meleers are hitting) according to their weakness, 1-shotting them, and using Reinforce to keep her mana up. This will help you to deal with enemies without taking too much damage every fight. Give one of your attackers the Wind Crystal to deal more damage to monsters. As far as I can tell, nothing here resists wind, and 2 monsters are weak. Have Lish Aqua Shoot or Divine Ray down the Wraiths first. On the second screen, you'll notice a chasm to the east. Head North then take the secret passage east to get Earth Quartz. Equip this to Lish. Exit north-west. You will get a Nuggets of Magic Silver (used to craft stuff later on) and Burgler's Forearm. Equip the latter to Kreist if you wish (honestly, if it does anything useful, I don't know what it is) and head back to the fork. Head south-west this time. Two screens further, looking at the map will make it painfully obvious where Tablet: High Mage is. Note the mastery ability. VERY useful to have, but at 1500 TP it will take you most of the game to get there. Still, if you have Reinforce learned from High Preist, I would start investing; nothing from that tablet is anything less than great. At this point, become aware of Kit: Support's Rune Breaker. Consider learning it. Well, whatever you do with it, Grazard is standing in your way at the moment. [Boss: Grazard] 21600 HP Weakness: Light Steal: Lacklau Lead with Charge, Armor Break, Enchant Weapon ==> Dau. Second turn, Break x3 Rising Slash, Divine Ray, Heavy Crush should put him down about a third of his health. Beware his high damage. He has the ability to hit your entire party for 800~900 damage, inflicting physical attack down as well: be sure to respond with Healing Wind. Following the fight, we need to put out the metaphorical fire that Grazard set so let's hurry on. The next room is large, but there's nothing of interest in the chests. Check the map to see where you need to go to get to the end. We find the source of the problem: [Boss: Giant of the Earth] 20700 HP Weakness: Wind Steal: Earth Crystal You can start off the battle the same way as the last, but if you're using High Mage the second turn becomes different: Rising Slash, Heavy Crush, Cyclone. With luck, you'll be able to knock off 12000 of it's health just with that. I never saw him do anything dangerous, just keep everyone's health above 550 and you'll down him with ease. Memory Quartz back to The Dwarves' Hamlet. Story story story AIRSHIP! Not that it does you a lot of good besides letting you go to the next dungeon. The other dungeons aren't enterable, and the 2 new towns you have access to (Snowcross, Kilnorsha) only have item shops with boring selections. Snowcross dialog might be worth reading if you're into that kind of thing. --World Map-- SO head south to the small area with a dungeon in it. --The Sealed Ruins-- The enemies here have no overlapping weaknesses, so I recommend you just keep Hunter Rings on Kries and Dau. KILL THE BIRDS FIRST!!! They can confuse your party. First room is nothing interesting. Second room is somewhat involved. All of the middle cells have monsters in them; all other cells have switches. Some switches open up monster cells, others open up a new set of switches. The end goal is to get the treasure chest in the third row. All monsters run VERY fast and have an extremely large sight radius. First row will be the bottom row, 2nd the one after that, 3rd etc, 4th the north -most row. Save first if you want, but the following section is a cakewalk. --The Secret Passage-- Can't go north or east (or south...), so go west. --Eashtend Castle-- This is completely linier. Once you've beaten the fabulous soldier twice, you can exit the castle if you want, or continue on. --Eastend Castle-- Nothing important in the first room. (North-east.) Symphony of Eternity from Kemco Games is a blast from the past.

A reminder of the good old days when, instead of being sodden with angst and melodrama, Japanese role-playing games were renowned for their charm.

Dressed up like a 16-bit classic, the game takes its cues from Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasy series, then adds touchscreen functionality and a cast of likeable, familiar characters.

It'll never win awards for originality, but that's not what it's aiming for.

This is old skool gaming at its finest. A mix of nostalgia and playability, held together by some excellent modern additions.

Kreist Almighty

The game tells the story of Kreist, a loveable adventurer with a heart of gold who, along with his Golem friend Dauturu, is on a quest for Regratlute, a fabled stone which grants whoever holds it his heart's desire.

Kreist and Dauturu are joined in this endeavour by Laishutia, a Princess from the kingdom of Eashtend who, at the start of the game, escapes a coup by the skin of her teeth.

You guide Kreist and his friends through volcanic wastelands, windswept vistas and forest clearings, battling magical ninjas, evil plants, and green globules of slime, gaining experience and treasure as you go.

Nostalgic Sleeves

The game is split between exploration and fighting, although, unlike other examples of the genre, battles in Symphony of Eternity aren't random.

Creatures are represented on the map, allowing cunning players to sneak up on them, or avoid a conflict altogether if they're running low on health.

The turn based battles are controlled with a simple on-screen cross, which lets you choose the attacks, potions, stances, and specials you use to combat your foes.

It's a neat, streamlined system that works wonderfully well.

There's a good deal of character micro-management under the surface, too.

A tablet-based class system allows each of your adventurers to learn new skills and roles, and points awarded when you level-up can be allocated to different attributes.

Progression feels rounded and natural, and the difficulty levels are expertly managed.

As the game goes on, your characters become individuals, which inevitably leads you to caring about them even more.

On top of all this, the graphics and sound add to the nostalgic vibe. Symphony of Eternity isn't afraid to wear its influences on its sleeve and the experience is all the stronger for that.

New Classics

But Symphony of Eternity isn't without its flaws.

The on-screen dial you use to control Kreist is an unwieldy beast that often leads you in the wrong direction, and sometimes you walk through enemies, turning what should have been a pre-emptive strike into an advantage for your foes.

Despite these niggles, Symphony of Eternity is a huge success.

The intuitive battle system is a treat, whilst the cast of engaging and interesting characters will keep you playing long into the night.

It's odd that such a resoundingly old skool game can be a breath of fresh air, but that's exactly what Symphony of Eternity is: a reinterpretation destined for the giddy heights of the games it so lovingly apes.
