A dog is a best friend and companion. To some, dogs are like siblings or children. They become a part of the family and everyday life, so their loss is felt gravely. The death of a pet can be a traumatic and lonely experience, but our online pet store can help with dog memorials and items that help you honor and remember your dearest four-legged family member. One important decision you’ll need to make at some point is whether to bury or cremate your pet. Better to make the decision earlier on rather than waiting until your pet has passed and you are in the process of grieving. If you decide to bury your pet, our online pet store has beautiful dog memorial stones to commemorate your canine’s life. There are garden plaques like the Grasslands Road Cat Paw Print Stepping Stone featuring a heart with a tiny paw, a halo and the words, “You have left my life, but you will never leave my heart.” Choose an engraved dog memorial stone like the Pawprints Remembered Pet Memorial Stone that also features a picture frame for your favorite photo. There are two options when burying a pet: dog caskets and dog urns. You can bury dog urns or place them in a special place in your home. You can also wear your dog’s ashes with dog keepsakes like an ashes locket. Chewy.com also has dog memorial picture frames featuring meaningful quotes to honor your pet. If you or a friend need help dealing with pet loss, there’s also dog memorial books. If someone you know is experiencing loss, a thoughtful gift could cheer them up. Chewy has the best gifts for dog lovers who are grieving the loss of a devoted pet.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Memorial Stones
What can I put on my dog's memorial stone?
You can put many different things on your dog's memorial stone. People often put their pet's name, dates, a personalized message, and even pictures on a dog memorial stone. Choose from memorial stones with pre-printed messages and graphics or choose stones that you can have custom engraved with the text and/or images of your choice. Memorial stones can be used to mark a grave or special spot in your garden or yard and are a great way to remember a departed pet.
What are dog memorial stones made of?
Dog memorial stones can be made from a variety of materials. Many memorial stones are made of real stone like slate, flagstone, marble or granite, or they may be made from cast stone or resin instead. Memorial stones come in a variety of sizes, shapes and materials, so you have many options for memorializing your furry friend.
How do you set a dog memorial stone?
You can set a dog memorial stone by simply placing it in a designated spot in your yard or garden. Memorial stones may also be used to mark a pet's grave. Most memorial stones are heavy enough to stay in place and do not require any special ground preparation, but placing them on a flat, stable surface is usually recommended.
Where should you put a dog's memorial stone?
You should put a dog memorial stone in a special spot you have chosen to honor and memorialize your pet. Most memorial stones are made to withstand outdoor conditions, so you can use them in a garden, yard or grave site. If your pet is to be buried in a pet cemetery, you may need to find out what kind of memorial markers the site allows.
Pet Memorial Stones: In Memory Of Pet Tribute
Pet memorial stones can serve as a loving tribute to a pet that has passed on. When choosing a pet memorial stone, you have a number of different factors to consider:
Shape. Most pet memorial stones feature a stone with engraving, but some stones are crafted into specific shapes, like a heart or a paw print.
Portrait or Image.Consider if you want a basic portrait of your pet on your memorial stone. Alternatively, some choose to use a more generic dog or cat silhouette or a paw print image.
Wording. You can choose to display your pet’s years or a touching sentiment, or you may simply put your pet’s name and nothing else.
Customization. Cost will vary depending on the level of customization you’re looking for. Naturally, pet memorial stones with custom portraits or wording will cost more than general pet memorial stones.
Location. You will want to make sure that you get a stone that lends itself to being displayed in the space you have for it. If you want your memorial stone mounted on a wall inside, for example, look for a lightweight piece that has a keyhole in the back. On the other hand, if you plan to place it in your garden, look for a heftier stone that can withstand all types of weather.
Keeping these things in mind, below are our 12 favorite pet memorial stones listed on Amazon and Etsy.
1. Paw Print Pet Memorial Stone
Description: The Paw Print Pet Memorial Stone is an affordable option for owners on a budget and comes in a unique paw print shape.
It measures 8.75” x 8.75”, weighs about 3 pounds, and is made out of natural-looking, weatherproof polyresin that looks great in the garden.
An inscription on the paw reads, “Our hearts still ache in sadness and secret tears still flow. What it meant to lose you, no one will ever know.” There is also a 2” x 3” frame set into the palm of the paw where you can personalize the memorial with a photo of your beloved pet.
PROS: This memorial stone is one of the most affordable memorial stones that can be customized. In addition, owners felt that it looked particularly nice outside in a garden
CONS: If kept outdoors, the photo can become weatherworn by sun and rain after some time. Some owners noted that laminating the photo helped it last a few years. Others had success adding caulk around the back and front of the picture frame.
2. Design Toscano Dog Angel Pet Grave Marker Statue
Description: This mid-priced Dog Angel Grave Marker by Design Toscano is a small statue of a winged dog, nuzzled up and sleeping peacefully.
It’s hand-cast from crushed stone and resin for a memorial stone that can stand up to the elements. It measures 10” x 5.5” at the base, stands 5 inches tall, and weighs about 2 pounds. It has a stone finish, resulting in a simple and elegantly-styled memorial to your pet.
PROS: Most owners were very satisfied with the craftsmanship of this piece, noting that it would withstand all kinds of weather (especially if you add an additional layer of lacquer before setting it outside). A few owners also felt that this was a unique piece compared to what was available in stores.
CONS: This grave marker cannot be customized. Additionally, some owners felt that it was a little over-priced, especially considering that it was made in China.
3. Personalized Pet Memorial Stepping Stone
Description: This mid-priced pet memorial stone is designed to be placed in your garden as a stepping stone.
It measures 11 inches in diameter and comes in a delicate sand color, making this stone an elegant yet subtle addition to your garden or home. The stone has the image of a dog bone outlined in black etching. Inside the dog bone, you can customize the stone with your dog’s name and dates.
Above and below the dog bone there is an inscription which reads, “Forever Missed / Forever in Our Hearts” (a lovely sentiment, although it cannot be altered). Finally, this stone is also quite sturdy as it is made of concrete and weighs about 10 pounds.
PROS: The vast majority of owners were impressed with the quality and durability of this product, especially for the price. One noted that, even if some of the colors fade, the inscription and customization will remain because it is etched, not simply written, into the memorial stone. The customer service is also excellent; the maker sends an email to confirm the customization that you want.
CONS: The only downside to this product is that the sentiment cannot be changed or deleted, and some owners felt that it made the memorial look too busy.
4. Evergreen Dog Paw Print Garden Stone
Description: This affordable memorial stone uses a natural rock design with two paw print indented into it.
Below the paw prints is a sentiment etched in cursive which reads,”If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.”
This stone, made of polystone (a synthetic stone), weighs about 2 pounds and is 12 inches long, 3 inches wide, and half an inch thick. It has been treated to withstand all types of weather. Although this is advertised as a “garden stone,” there is also a keyhole in the back so that it can be mounted if desired.
PROS: Many owners have been satisfied with the weight of the stone; it is not too heavy, but heavy enough that it sits securely in the garden. Overall, owners felt that it was an attractive memorial that reflected their feelings about their beloved pet.
CONS: This stone has no customization options. Additionally, a small minority of owners seem to have received a slightly different product that is darker than the stone pictured.
5. Grasslands Road Pet Memorial Stepping Stone
Description: The Grasslands Pet Memorial Stepping Stone is an inexpensive option for owners who want a sweet memory of their pet to either hang on a wall or place in the garden.
The circular stone is 8.4 inches in diameter and .6 inches thick. It weighs about 2.35 pounds and is made of a cement resin mix. It pictures the raised image of a winged dog with a little golden halo. An etched inscription around the circumference reads, “Run free now, Go play with the angels.”
PROS: Most owners were very satisfied with this product, commenting that it was exactly what they expected: a touching and well-made memorial for their dog. One owner also mentioned that Grasslands Road is an exceptionally considerate company, even including a handwritten note of sympathy in the package.
CONS: No personalizations can be made to this product. Also, a couple of customers complained that the stone turned green after being left in the garden for a few months. However, this was an uncommon occurrence and shouldn’t be a dealbreaker for owners who want to mount the stone or keep it inside.
6. Carson Beaded Pet Memorial Stone
Description: This affordable, heart-shaped memorial stone features a unique paw print with inset beadwork.
The pawprint takes up the upper right-hand side of the heart, while the rest of the heart is covered by an etched inscription which reads, “No longer by my side… but Forever in my Heart.”
The stone is made of resin, but designed to look like sandstone. Weighing about 3 pounds, it’s 9.25 inches long and about one inch thick. It has a keyhole in the back and is built to withstand the weather, so it can be hung or placed in the garden.
PROS: Most of the owners were pleased with their purchase, noting that the beads in the paw gave this memorial stone a nice dab of sparkle without being too over the top. Some mentioned that it could withstand extremely hot and rainy weather. Others recommended that, if placing this product outside, it might be a good idea to spray it with acrylic first to help it last longer.
CONS: This memorial stone cannot be customized. Also, a small minority of customers received stones that had been broken or otherwise damaged in the mail. Given the price of the product, however, this is probably a risk worth taking (unless you have a time constraint).
Etsy Memorial Pet Stones
You’ll find that memorial pet stones from Etsy offer more customization than the selection provided by other online sites. We will be detailing some of the most beautiful, highly-rated memorial stones for pets on Etsy.
7. Granite Dog Memorial Stone
Description: If you are looking for a sleek, modern look that is also affordable, this granite dog memorial stone from an Etsy artist could be a good option for you.
This memorial is square in shape; it measures 6 inches along each side and is about half an inch thick. It’s made of a shiny, black granite with white engraving. The stone features your pup’s name in large letters along the top, decorative paw prints in the center, and a dog bone along the bottom with your dog’s dates inside. It is suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
PROS: This product is customized, yet still ships very promptly, within 2-5 days of your order date. The seller even asks for your “need by” date to make sure that you receive your memorial stone in time if there is a time crunch. In general, this Etsy shop has provided many customized granite products for their customers, all with great satisfaction.
CONS: There are no complaints from owners. The only drawback could be that, if you want a proof of what your memorial stone will look like, that will add an extra day to your order’s processing time.
8. Granite Memorial Stone with Photo
Description: This is a mid-priced granite photo memorial stone via Etsy that allows you many options for customization.
The polished black granite stone is circular, with a diameter of 6 inches and a thickness of ¼ of an inch. It can be customized with your dog’s name, his dates, an inscription, and/or a photo laser-etched in white.
The artist will work with you individually via Etsy messenger to determine which photo will look best etched onto the granite and to find a design that you are happy with.
PROS: Owners were very happy with both the product and their experience working with this artist. The artist seems to have a very good sense of what will look good on the granite, because all customers were satisfied with how the picture turned out.
CONS: This stone is very thin at only a quarter of an inch, making it much more fragile than other similar products. If you have it outside, make sure it is in a place where it won’t get stepped on (despite advertising, it is not a stepping stone) or, worse, run over by a lawn mower!
9. Engraved Granite Pet Marker
Description: If you like the idea of engraved granite, but are looking for a more substantial memorial stone, this engraved granite pet marker from Etsy is an excellent (although somewhat pricier) option.
This polished black granite block is 4” x 8” x 2”, giving it the appearance of a grave marker, rather than just a simple stone. The marker can be customized with a photo and any text of your choice. The artist will work with you by showing you a design proof, which you can either request changes in or approve for engraving.
PROS: Owners were very pleased with this artist’s patience and commitment to creating just the right design for the pet marker. As own reviewer put it, the artist helped her vision “come to life.” Overall, this is a standout piece either indoors or out.
CONS: The cost could be prohibitive for some owners. However, if you are looking for something that is sure to endure the elements, the added expense could be worth it.
10. Pet Portrait Stone
Description: If you have a favorite picture of your pup, this pet portrait photo stone (via Etsy) could be the one-of-a-kind memorial you’ve been looking for.
The artist takes your dog’s photo and transfers it onto genuine rock that can stand up straight on its own. You can add wording free of charge and the image is guaranteed to be UV resistant for up to 100 years.
Moreover, there is a memorial stone option for almost any budget. A small 4” x 6” indoor stone is quite affordable. Stones are also available in medium ( 6” x 8”) and large (8” x 10”) at higher premiums. You will also pay a little extra for a weatherproof finish.
PROS: Owners loved the finished product. Moreover, they report that the seller is very easy to work with and dedicated to patiently helping their customers design the perfect pet memorial.
CONS: This seller is quite prompt, but, as with most customized Etsy products, you will still have to wait 2-4 weeks to get your memorial stone. For owners in a rush, Amazon may be the best option.
11. Pet Memorial Sand-Carved River Stone
Description: This Etsy Sand-Carved Memorial Stone is a little more expensive than similar products, but, if you are looking for something handmade from real river stone, the extra cost is worth it.
The artist works mostly with granite stones 12-14 inches in length. The engraving is sand carved deeply into the stone and accentuated with long-lasting lithichrome stone paint in a color of your choice (shadow black, shadow brown, or white).
There are 6 lines of script available of on the stone: one line for the pet’s name, one line for the pet’s dates, 3 lines for a personalized inscription (27 characters on each line), and one line for a design (paw prints, dog bone, or heart prints). The artist offers several font options. The stone is designed to stand up to any weather, but also looks great indoors.
PROS: Owners rated their experience with this artist very positively, commenting that he was a good communicator and that the process of making the memorial stone was very easy. Owners were also very satisfied with the look of the finished product and were excited to place it in their gardens.
CONS: You do not have a choice in regards to the color of the stone and it is unclear what color you might get (the artist simply says it comes in “earthtones”).
12. Custom Mosaic Dog Portrait Memorial Stone
Description: This Custom Mosaic Pet Memorial Stone is pricey, but truly one of a kind. With just a photo of your beloved pup, the artist creates a customized mosaic portrait made from pieces of colored glass.
The base stone is a river rock, about 9-12 inches at its longest dimension, and is hand selected by the artist from nature. The glass pieces are surrounded by decorative ball chain and mounted to the stone using weather-proof grout.
This memorial stone can be kept outdoors, although the artist recommends bringing it inside during colder months so as not to crack the glass.
PROS: Owners found this artist’s pieces to be “exquisite,” even more beautiful in-person than in online photos. In addition, the artist is very responsive and easy-to-work with. Owners found that the pieces were received in a timely manner and well-packaged.
CONS: The cost of this product may be prohibitive for many owners. However, if you like the mosaic artistry of this memorial stone, consider other products from this maker that cannot be customized.

I ordered this marker to replace an old, cracked one, (purchased from a different company), for my Chihuahua that had passed several years ago. I guess I was expecting something similar to the one I was replacing, but I was very pleasantly surprised! This stone is MUCH thicker and heavier, and the quality is beyond excellent! I have no doubt that this memorial marker will withstand the test of time and remain just as beautiful as it is now!
I have ordered several of your pet grave markers. I have always been very happy, as the quality has always been great. I have gotten some with photos and some with your footprints and other engravings, and I have never been disappointed.
Such elegance and quality.

The grave marker for our dog was exactly as portrayed in the design email sent for us to approve. We had purchased the same style engraved black granite markers from a different supplier who no longer sold them. The Mainely Urns adjusted the size our original design and made it even more appealing on the stone.
You will not be disappointed with the quality of this product. It was securely wrapped and shipped and delivered on time and exactly as shown.
Thank you again for the care you exhibit on fabricating such important items that you produce.

I am very happy with my purchase. Although I wish the engraved letters were a little deeper (as it will be outdoors), it looks wonderful.
- Design and overall look is wonderful.
- Engraving needs to be somewhat deeper for outdoor longevity.
Our Marker came and it was perfect. Just as it looked on the website. The quality is excellent. The packing was done so carefully. Their customer service was awesome.

Dear Pellani Family,
I received the stones for my beloved cats today and would like to tell you how happy I am.
The quality of material is undeniable and your craftsmanship is exceptional.
Blake's custom paw prints make me smile. I am very grateful for the extra time and effort you spent to make this happen.
I could sense your professionalism and integrity through your emails. This whole experience with you has been a pleasure and these stones give me a sense of peace and serenity at this very difficult time. Thank you very much.
Just wanted to send you a note of appreciation for the stone I ordered from your company. We made the tough decision to let our baby, Jesse, go last Tuesday. It was one of the hardest decision we've had to make. We buried her Tuesday, and on Tuesday evening I was on the web looking for a grave marker for her resting place on our property. I came across your website, and was happy with what I saw. Ordered one of your large stones with all my specifications. The process was easy, self-explanatory, and quick. I received the stone on Saturday! I couldn't believe how quick I received it, and how wonderful it looked. Thank you so much for your wonderful service to your customers! We love the stone, and are sure you will have future customers, as my extended family was impressed with your quality, and quickness.
Just wanted to say I got the three markers today and they are beautiful.
The pictures do not do them justice. Thank You, Thank You.
Having gone through two prior cats passing away, I'd bought pet memorial stones from one of your competitors. They were more money than you and I don't think the quality of their stones can match yours.
I still have four cats left and when the time comes, I plan on ordering more stones from your company.
Thanks for a great looking product and for a great job packaging it up nice and safely in the shipping box.
We received our two pet memorial stones yesterday. As sad as we were to order these stones, we were extremely pleased with the prompt order processing and delivery. Above all the quality and appearance of the stones is just beautiful. It’s a pleasure to deal with a company that takes pride in their product and I just wanted to express my appreciation. We now have two beautiful reminders of our cherished family pets. Thank-you.
I just received my order for a pet grave marker. It was so nice, I cried. I know that "Our Pup" would like it also.
I want to thank you for a beautiful product and the fast delivery time.
We would recommend your service to anyone,
We just received our stone and we couldn't be more pleased. The stone is nice
and large and heavy and appropriate for a marker. It's such a great memorial
and it's so beautifully done. I'm so glad we found your site. It's exactly
what we wanted and needed. Thank you for doing what you do so well.

12 Unique or DIY Pet Memorial Stone Ideas
Pets are part of the family in many households. For a lot of folks, their smile and enthusiasm is the best part of coming home.
Jump ahead to these sections:
It’s no wonder then that many of us are lost in grief when we lose a dog or a cat who was our special companion. Memorializing our pets can’t bring them back for one more round of fetch, but they can help us slowly turn the grief of loss into gratitude for the time spent together.
Families memorialize pets in a variety of ways, but using a memorial stone can be an especially permanent and beautiful way to do so. A memorial stone, for instance, can be a way to remember your pet if you opt for pet cremation and don’t plan to bury them.
Here are some ideas for DIY and prefabricated stone memorials for your pet.
DIY Pet Memorial Stone Ideas
For an inexpensive memorial with a personalized touch, these DIY projects can create a permanent memorial to keep on a porch, in a garden, or in another space that’s important to you.
1. Mosaic in concrete
For this DIY memorial, all you need is a bag of concrete from the hardware store and a mold. After mixing the concrete and filling the mold, you can use a stick or tool and indent the name of your pet into the concrete while it’s setting.
To create a beautiful and unique look, set pieces of colored glass or beads to create a mosaic in the concrete. You can also opt for an abstract design featuring your pet’s favorite colors and shapes. When the concrete has hardened, display the stone in your garden or along a pathway where you’ll see it and remember your pet.
If you don't have the time to gather all of the materials, you can buy a DIY mosaic kit with everything you need.
2. Painted designs on river rocks
Smooth, small-to-medium-sized rocks can make a good canvas for a painted memorial of your beloved pet. You can either collect the rocks yourself, or you can pick up a rock painting kit with paint, rocks, and brushes. Painting a scene or design and adding a note in permanent marker can turn the river rocks into a beautiful way to remember your pet.
Using multiple rocks, you can create a small design or even a mini-rock-garden. This form of pet memorial is particularly helpful for children who are processing grief and want a way to express their memories with their pets.
3. Etching into pavers or brick
Buying decorative stepping stones or bricks and using an engraving tool to chip out a design can be a good option if you have a background in engraving. Engraving or etching has the advantage over paint which can fade in the sun.
If you’re up for a small challenge, learning how to use these tools is not particularly difficult. Just remember different materials will chip away at different grades.
4. Hardwood with carving
While not technically a memorial ‘stone,’ a hardwood plaque or slab can be treated to survive the elements. This can be a beautiful option for DIY memorial markers.
Make your design on paper then transfer it to the hardwood plaque with a wood engraving tool or wood-burning tool. Treat the wood or cover it in a preserving material like varnish. You can display it indoors or incorporate it into a garden. If you're new to wood carving, you can pick up a wood carving kit with carving knives, gloves, and other materials.
Pet Memorial Stone Ideas for a Cat
Cats, with their independence and spunk, can be key parts of our lives that we want to remember forever. Here are a few unique cat memorial stones that might help you treasure the memories of your companion.
5. Quote about cats etched on a headstone
There are many clever quotes about how cats behave and how they affect our lives. If you’d prefer a quote about cats over a traditional headstone, look up cat quotes on the internet and select one that applies to your particular cat.
Either DIY or have a professional etch the quote on a stone you can display where it will bring you joy. You can also order a granite stone online, like this granite pet headstone, and add a photo and dates.
6. Treasured memory etched on a stone plaque
Another direction to go with your memorial stone is to either depict your cat in a favorite window or pose, or to write 1-2 sentences about a memory with your cat. When displayed, the memorial will take you back to those moments.
A professional engraver can help you consider which options will look best on stone, and which ones can fit your price range. Or, as we said above, you can order an inexpensive memorial plaque online and add the quote.
7. Name and years of life etched on a small memorial rock
A more traditional memorial stone for your cat would include their name and years of life. This works well if you don’t have lots of space and want a small reminder of your cat. Even with few words, this marker will be powerful.
8. Painting or photograph set behind glass on a headstone
If you use glass or another preservation technique, you can embed a painting or photograph of your beloved cat on the headstone itself, keeping your memories full of bright colors. You’ll always be able to picture your cat in his or her most iconic pose.
Make sure that whatever way the painting or photograph is sealed, it is entirely watertight if intended for outdoor use. If you opt for a less watertight option, the stone can be kept indoors to preserve it and protect it from the sun.
If you don't want to do it yourself, you can find inexpensive pet memorial stones, like this paw-shaped stone, that lets you insert any color photo you'd like.
Pet Memorial Stone Ideas for a Dog
The love and loyalty of our pet dogs inspire equal love and loyalty from human owners. It’s no wonder that we all grieve for the loss of a dog. Here are some ways to make your dog’s memory live on in a pet memorial stone.
9. Seal important objects—bone, leash, collar—in lucite
Lucite is a great way to turn your dog's precious items into memorial markers. Favorite treats with a cute shape or a dangling charm from your dog’s collar can be valuable reminders of your time together.
You can also include a note containing details of their life, best set near the surface of the lucite so it’s visible and easy to read.
10. A stone bench in a favorite park or nature
This is a larger and more expensive option, but sometimes we owe it to our furry friends. It can be very powerful to place a stone bench in the park or natural area where you spent your time together on walks.
Placing a bench also allows other human-dog pairs to take a breather during a walk, deriving comfort without even knowing the backstory of the bench itself.
If you can't find a way to dedicate a bench to your pet at public park, you can purchase a personalized memorial bench and put it in your own backyard.
11. Headstone with their silhouette
One elegant way to display a pet memorial stone is to have a stylized silhouette of your dog etched into it.
This makes the stone both a piece of artwork as well as a way to commemorate your dog with a personalized grave marker.
12. Donated stone or brick to a local shelter or animal rescue
A creative way to memorialize your loyal dog is to donate to a shelter or animal rescue nearest to you or the one where your dog came from. Ask them if they have a wall of memories or a way to donate to help other animals in exchange for displaying your pet’s name or picture.
Some will even let you purchase a stone or brick in a path in your dog’s honor. This way, more dogs are helped by your generosity while also creating a little legacy for your pal.
Letting Your Pet’s Memory Live On
A memorial stone represents much more than just a marker of where a grave has been placed. Especially in the case of beloved fuzzy companions, memorial stones are about remembering an experience of love.
When you take the time to make or commission a personalized pet memorial stone, you’re giving yourself an opportunity for closure while also commemorating a beloved friend. Consider dedicating and placing your memorial stone with a little bit of ceremony, creating your pet’s funeral in whatever way is most meaningful to you.
