Bmw painted engine cover

Well here's a quick how to on if your wanting to spray your engine cover to liven it up a bit;

Here's a finished picture just so you can see what you can roughly achieve.

Image

And here's how you get there..

Things you'll need - Primer, main colour, secondary colour, gloss lacquer (optional), good quality masking tape, average quality masking tape (just so you don't waste all the good stuff!) and old newspapers.

1. Preparation; To remove the cover (On my 57 plate 118d) all it needed was a firm tug upwards and then simply pulling towards you, I'm not sure if all our 1ers are the same so be careful if it feels your forcing it.

At this stage your'll obviously want to clean it throughly, all I used was fairy liquid and a sponge, making sure I got every piece of dirt off the cover. I then used a towel and hair dryer to dry it, using the hair dryer to dry the little gaps which the towel couldn't reach.

Once it's fully dry and clean, your'll have something like this;

Image

I then gave it a quick going over with 800 grit sandpaper just to prepare the surface for paint.

Image

2. Primer; Key rule when spraying paint on in layers, thin layers is always the way to go, never think you can get it done quicker if you do it in less layers, because your'l get runs and drips and it also won't set as well. Always try to do every stage in 3 or 4 light layers.

Aim for around 50% coverage with your first pass and then just build it up from there, waiting roughly 15 minutes between coats.

Image

Image

3. Colour; This is where you want to put your main/base colour on, again, 3/4 thin layers without rushing, allowing 30 minutes to dry after the last coat.

Image

4. Secondary colour; This is where you need a good quality masking tape, you need something which is thin with a sharp edge, and isn't too sticky so doesn't lift the fresh paint, I used orange 'Frogtape' for my good quality tape, and regular blue detailers tape for the not so good stuff. Any of the masking you do will show in the quality at the end when you have nice straight, sharp edges, so pay attention when your masking parts off.

For doing the stripes, simply place the masking tape up to the line of the raised stripe, and then press down with your fingernail neatly up against the bottom of the stripe. Once you've done all 4 side of the stripe you can then mask off the rest of the cover with newspaper and the not so good masking tape. You can do two stripes at a time to save a bit of time here, and once again, 3/4 thin layers with 15 minutes to dry.

Image

Image

Then for the tricky bit, the BMW writing, I taped 6/7 pieces of the good tape together, overlapping half way to effectively make double thickness tape. I then gently traced the BMW writing with a pen on the tape, and then cut this out with some sharp scissors ( nail scissors, etc). You can then place and press down the cut out pieces leaving only the raised writing showing, and spray as normal.

Image

5. Lacquer; If you want a glossy finish your'll need some lacquer, so once again 3/4 thin coats and you should be good to go, and end up with something like this,

Some finished fitted shots of mine..

I’m certainly no expert and this was my first try at such a project but here are my steps:

Masked off the tri-colored bars next to the “M”. This masking remains until the very end. Didn’t mask the “M” because I wanted this black.

After lots of sanding of entire cover with 600 and 1000 grit, cleaned with 91% alcohol. Be sure to sand in every tiny crevice.

I used Duplicolor Adhesion Promotor Primer Clear 3 coats. Sit overnight.

Then I used this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Auto...r=431959850718

Really good match I think. Lots of light coats and 2000 grit wet sanding to make it nice and even. Masking to paint the gloss black on top of the Sakhir Orange...pain in the butt for the letters.

Wait overnight and then 3 coats of Duplicolor Ceramic Engine Paint Clear. Then more wet sanding and BOOM! Done! Enjoy!

P.S....After each spray, I covered with a box to prevent garage dust from sticking to the drying surface. I also waited longer than advised (around an hour and overnight) between coats to allow for better curing.. I think that all in, cost about ~ $55.

Guess this is in the right place? figured I would post pics of the new engine cover I just got from "sammy_0559". Only thing I changed was the overlays on the roundel. Really adds a lot to the engine bay. Best $50 I have ever spent LOL!!

Looks nice Rob! Surprised you haven't switched out the dci filters to blue. I think you can just order a replacement from sbfilters and even get the top rim in blue or red.

Painted cover bmw engine

On that day, there was a terrible downpour on. The street, rivers of water poured out from black skies and turned the pavements into mountain rivers. She got out of the company car and ran at a run, covering herself from the rain with a plastic folder, but she was. Still wet through and through. When she entered the office of the company she wanted, she looked like a woman bathing in clothes.

I havent told anyone about this yet, but the memories of what I experienced do not give me rest, I constantly mentally return to the events of that. Evening and this causes an incomparable excitement in me. I was then 40 years old, and I was pregnant by my second husband.

Now discussing:

Just outside the door was a small hall with sinks on a kind of podium in the center. And along the walls were doors to individual toilets. Thus, there was no division into male and female zones, and our joint entrance inside did not attract attention. Waiting until there were no washing hands and preening club visitors in the hall with sinks, I dragged my girl into the vacant booth.
